I would be interested in some of the LF cross eggs by March.  Maybe we can do an egg swap for bantam silvers and/or some others.

I\'m trying to help a 4-Her with the lavender gene.   :stare:

He is interested in joining in on the bantam lavender project.

With some assistance from John B. and grisaboy, here is a link to the amended version--some terminology and Punnett Squares. http://www.frontiernet.net/~susiewinder/lavender.htm

Any other corrections or suggestions before I give it to him?

Thanks,
Susie Winder

Hi Suzie,

I looked at your genetics chart and Punnnet squares.
You are on the right track .... but not quite right.
The main thing here is the the E down color gene and the lavendar gene are different genes.  So when doing your Punnet square you have to account for both sets of genes.
In this case the down color gene is the same for the black and lavendar color birds.

So for the F2 chicks you would have:

25% black (EE, LavLav)  -- Lav, with capital L is non lavendar,
which is Dominant to lavendar.

50% black, carrying one lavender gene (EE, Lavlav)

25% lavender (EE, lavlav) -- lower case lav  denotes recessive.

The Lavendar gene doesn\'t change the EE down color gene, but changes how it is expressed.

Thanks a bunch Curtis, aka grisaboy!

I think I got it now and I updated the link in my message above.  Boy, that took a lot of work for my little brain.  I even made a Punnett Square for the lavender wheaten project and now understand how you came up with the ratios that you predicted.   :D

Curtis does know what he is talking about and it looks good, but I would suggest omitting the E-locus gene symbols.  Since this is for a Jr. that is just starting out it would be simpler to just show the genes lav and Lav.  Lavender or the lack of it is all you are dealing with.   The E-locus doesn\'t even have to be brought up because it is the same, EE, for all the possibilities.  It would be cleaner and easier to understand...I think.
just my two cents worth,

I have another dozen or so as of this morning!  The black to lavender ratio is about 2 to 1. :D

The same goes here...Michael.
These are most of the bantam chicks that I took out of the hatchers this morning.  I did count the silvers and there were 23 with a couple more pipped.  On the left are the silvers, blues and blacks.  On the right are lavenders, wheatens/blue wheatens, brown reds, buffs and the ones with black bodies and buff heads are from my Vorwerk bantams (if you are only into Ameraucanas don\'t look at them).

My last two posts somehow got doubled up. When I tried to delete the duplicates, they all went away.    Susie

My first post was from yesterday:

\"My first lavender chick.\"

My second post was a few minutes ago:

\"Michael, don\'t read this.      My second chick hatched and it\'s a lavender, too.  Well, I\'m not going to buy any lottery tickets for a while--I\'ve used up all of my good luck for a long time.\"

My first lavender chick hatched today! 1 out of 10 so far in this batch . . . what terrible odds!
