Bluebonnet Classic College Station Show Jan. 7, 2017
« on: January 13, 2017, 02:43:23 PM »
The largest poultry show in Texas with well over 2,000 head was held at College Station, Texas-the Bluebonnet Classic on Jan. 7, 2017.  This was a well attended Ameraucana meet, as we had 43 large fowl and 81 bantams in the open show.  The Jr. show had 6 large fowl and 8 bantams for a total of 138 head of Ameraucanas shown by 12 exhibitors.  Ameraucanas have grown out of the show room corner to be one of the main breeds on champion row!

The open large fowl were co-judged by Sam Brush and Jim Crain.  There were a total of 43 head shown by 6 exhibitors.  Eight head of blues were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  Three buffs were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Three head of wheatens were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a cock and Paul & Angela Smith RV on a cockerel.  Seven whites were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a hen and RV on a cock.  Three blue wheatens were shown with Paul & Angela Smith winning BV on a cock and Max Strawn RV on a pullet.  Six self blues were shown with Howard Story winning BV on a pullet and Paul & Angela Smith RV on a cockerel.  Blacks had 13 head shown with Max Strawn winning BV, BB, Best AOSB and Res. Champion large fowl on a cockerel.  Max also won RV, RB and Res. AOSB on a cock.  2017 made two years in a row that a black Ameraucana won reserve large fowl at this large show!

There is always a first time for anything that happens!  First time since 1999-more bantams in the open show than large fowl, with 81 head of bantams shown by 5 ABC members!  Six blues were shown with Max Strawn winning BV and RB on a pullet and Ernie Haire RV also on a pullet.  Thirteen buffs were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cockerel and Ernie Haire RV on a pullet.  Fifteen blue wheatens were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a pullet and Peggy Taylor RV on a cockerel.  Five self blue were shown with Dorothy Haire winning BV on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  Four silvers were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cock and RV on a hen.  Five splash wheatens were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  Three splash were shown with Mary Laska winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Sixteen wheatens were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cock and RV on a hen.  Five whites were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Nine blacks were shown with Max Strawn winning BV, BB and Best AOCCL on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  A very impressive set of bantams!  Great to see them fill a whole row and see one on champion row!

The Junior show was down in number shown and exhibitors from last year but the overall quality improved-especially in the bantams.  Bill Hopkins judged the Junior Ameraucana show.  Four blues were shown with Clarabelle Galbraith winning BV on a cockerel and Shyanne Story winning RV on a pullet.  There were two blacks shown by Clarabelle Galbraith with her cock winning BV, BB and Res. AOSB.  Clarabelle’s hen won RV, and RB.

Eight Junior bantams were shown by Madison Budde.  Madison showed two blacks with her cock winning BV and RB, and RV with her hen.  One chocolate cockerel into BV; four silvers with two hens winning BV and RV; and one wheaten cock winning BV and BB.  2016 had several Juniors showing
EELs-none shown this year.

One more successful Ameraucana meet is now history!

The open Ft. Worth Livestock Show is this weekend (Jan. 14 & 15) and the Junior show is next week end (Jan. 21 & 22).

Congratulations to all of the winners at the Bluebonnet Classic Show. It sounds like you had a great turnout of exhibitors and birds. As is often heard, "They do things bigger in Texas!". Great job.

Sounds like it was a Great show with lots of competition in the AM classes too.   Congratulations to all of the winners.  Nice turn out for the bantams too.  I am sure there were quality birds in all of the classes.   I hope you all have great success in the matings and hatching this spring.   Good Luck to everyone!
