40th Anniversary Celebration
History of the Ameraucana Breeders Club - Part V

The early 80's brought more excitement to the (then) Ameraucana Bantam Club!  In 1981, the fifth edition of the ABA Standard of Perfection included the complete Standard for the "Ameraucana" bantam, in white and wheaten varieties.

And the membership kept growing! The 1981 Summer Bulletin reported 40 active members, from all over the US and in England. (Ameraucana Bantam Club Summer Bulletin, 1981) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201981%20vol%203%202.pdf

On Nov. 12, 1983, at the combined APA/ABA National Show held in Columbus Ohio at the Ohio National, and one of the largest poultry shows of record at that time, had entries for all currently accepted varieties of the bantam Ameraucanas except buff.  75 bantam Ameraucanas were exhibited by Don Cable, Jerry Segler, John Wunderlich, Bernard Kellogg, Dave Horman, Mike Gilbert, John Fugate, Ray Gwynes, Frank Gary, and Bill Holland.  The ABA accepted all varieties shown and the buffs (which were not entered), making 8 accepted varieties of Ameraucana bantam: blue, black, wheaten, blue wheaten, brown red, silver, buff, and white. (Ameraucana Bantam Club Winter Bulletin, 1983) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201983%20vol%205%204.pdf

APA followed in their footsteps at their next national meeting in the summer of 1984, accepting the same eight varieties in large fowl! (Ameraucana Bantam Club Summer Bulletin, 1984) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201984%20vol%206%202.pdf

By the end of the first half of the 80s and less than a decade into the ABC's formation, all eight Ameraucana varieties, in both large fowl and bantam, were official!

Stay tuned for more history of the ABC and be sure to come help us celebrate 40 wonderful years at our 40th Anniversary Celebration and National meet at the Dayton Fancy Feathers show, in Greenville, OH, on Oct 5-6, 2018!
