Cheap Rabbit Cages for Bantam Breeding
« on: January 21, 2020, 02:51:58 PM »
Thought I'd post a pic of some bantam breeding cages I bought off a local farm group on Facebook. $50 + $10 for him to drive them an hour to me, so $60 total. I saw it as a good score. He got them in a trade for a boer goat. Previous owner used them for rabbits, seem to be perfect size for bantams.

8hole, each compartment is 18in wide X 24in long X 18in tall

4hole, each compartment is 24in wide X 24in long X 18in tall

Anyone else use this style set up for bantam pairs/trios mating?

That seems like a Really good deal for cages. I have seen some use this type cage for breeding, especially pairs for predigree tracking. Be careful that they are protected from predators, even snakes like bantam chickens and eggs. And the wire will not keep the creatures from creating havoc. I've had a 4' black snake inside wire of this size and even a hawk that snared a youngster thru the wire top. They will be helpful If they are in building with smaller wire or somehow protected with an elec wire perimeter. Commercial farms use wire cages not quite this size for 3 LF layers. The ones I've seen come in 10' sections. They have dividers at 14". So they can put many layer chickens in a row with roll away floors for eggs and automatic feeders/watering systems.

I plan on building a wooden stand for these to set in then place them inside a fully fenced in shed. Hopefully that'll keep most critters out. I need  a few large male barn cats and a guard dog to stay outside with chickens. Lost my best guard dog last year, maybe i can get a young rescue by next year to train. I'll post pics once frame is built, hopefully within next month

Hey Spencer, I know you've been busy with the new baby and the move. But how about the new digs for the chickens at the new place? I know you've been busy with a few things.  Post some pictures when you have time.
