Leakage in hackles of black large fowl
« on: December 15, 2021, 04:24:31 PM »
I'm sure I could search this up and figure it out, but with all the experts here I thought I'd just let y'all tell me.
Ok, so I had a breeding pair of black LF last year.
Some of the males from this hatch show hackle leakage, some do not.
Obviously I will not use those with leakage.
Their father did not show leakage and he is now dead and gone, rip.
So I know the female can carry the leakage and not display it.
But does that mean she carries it or can it not be determined with this information only.
Also the sons that do not show leakage, can they still carry it?
She's a nice hen and I'd like to use her, but don't want to keep the leakage.
Thanks

Color leakage essentially means the bird is not fully melanized.

Type is worth two-thirds on the scale points. If she’s a nice hen you could pair her with a clean male for another season and see what hatches. Sometimes we have to work with what we have. That being said, if I were in your shoes, I would discard any females in breeding pairs that throw leakage.

If a male has leakage, he is going to show it. So, any males that you have that do not have leakage present are good to go!

Ok, well that's good news for the non leakage boys and bad news for her.
I may try her with someone else just for curiosity.
Thanks

Ok I've been thinking about this some more.
If the father had leakage he would have showed it.  He did not.
And some sons have leakage, so it has to come from the mother, corrrect?
