Ameraucana eye color
« on: August 08, 2022, 11:34:09 PM »
Someone asked about proper eye color for the Ameraucana breed.  The standard calls for the eye color of an Ameraucana to be reddish bay.

While the term “reddish bay” is not specifically defined within the standard, “bay” is defined as “an intermingling of red and yellow in the iris caused by surface capillaries in the eyes.” This definition lays the groundwork for correctly identifying “reddish bay” eye color.

Keep in mind that the standard was written for sexually mature birds. Pullets and cockerels that have grey or green eye color are typically headed in the right direction to achieve reddish bay eye color. Pullets or cockerels with brown or black eyes will not achieve correct eye color.

The following Ameraucana hen has eye color that would be considered reddish bay. A smidge more of a reddish cast would be acceptable too.
