Breeding Isabel Ameraucana
« on: May 14, 2023, 12:13:32 PM »
A few people have asked how the Isabel (genetically identified as lavender patterned Isabel wheaten) project color is created for the Ameraucana breed.

To create this project color, one would cross a wheaten Ameraucana with a self blue/lavender Ameraucana.

The first generation chicks that one would want to select for will appear black in color as day olds.

At maturity, one can cross the first generation males and females. Crossing the males and females will create 6% Isabel on average.

Isabel x Isabel creates 100% Isabel.

I have attached pictures for visual learners.

Upon speaking with Luanne D’Amico, the original creater of the project color, she offered a few pieces of advice when working with the color variety. She recommended always selecting for good type. She also recommended selecting for Isabel females that have nice lavender color in their tails in order to maintain it. Luanne also recommended selecting for Isabel males that have proper color in the wing bay. One would also want to select for good feather quality.

Hopefully this educational post will be helpful to you as you work with the Ameraucana breed and the Isabel project color.

*Thank you for letting me use photos of your breeding stock for the post Luanne!

With the second generation being 6% Isabel, what are the other outcomes of the second generation?  Thanks.
