Diatomaceous earth-feed additive

I\'m jumping in with both feet on this one.  I have raised chickens for quite a while now, but got serious recently with Ameraucanas.  I have been reading quite a bit in trade publications and have seen ads and articles for food grade Diatomaceous earth to be used as a feed additive to use as a \"gentle\" wormer.  Most of the time DE is spoken of as a good thing and will be effective on the worms.  I have however found an article that makes a lot of sense against the use of DE.  I know with other animals that there is no need to use a wormer unless a lab specimen reveals worms, so I assume that hold true will chicken too.  Has anyone used DE on a regular basis as a wormer and does it work?  What are any pros or cons?  Does it eventually come down to just personal choice?  Thanks.

I have used DE as an occasional wormer and it has worked very well.
