Genetic References

There is quite a bit of information on Poultry Genetics in books and on the net.  As John pointed out, quite a bit is out dated.   I have a few books on the subject, some of which are from the 1940\'s.   I have found that some web sites quite helpful and others that seem to have mis-information.  Most have been very helpful in helping me understand my hobby.  So to those of you that are up to date and current on genetic theories, can you direct us to books, periodicals, and web sites that are current?  And as well list web sites and books to avoid.

Glen,
I think most people on this forum are familiar with the site that we often refer to and that is Poultry Genetics for the Nonprofessional:
http://marsa_sellers.tripod.com/geneticspages/page0.html
Another one that I really like is Poultry Genetics:
http://home.ezweb.com.au/~kazballea/genetics/default.html
Tim, from this forum, had a good site but see it was wiped out by his server.
Here are some others that I\'ve saved in a folder:
http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/instruct/mcclean/plsc431/mendel/mendel6.htm
http://home.ezweb.com.au/~kazballea/belgians/lowgraphic.htm
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4175/genes.html
http://www.genome.org/cgi/content/full/13/12/2754
I don\'t know how up-to-date the sites are or how acurate the information is.

John,

You posted while I was writing so please excuse me for repeating the information.

Tim

Glen,

There are a number of different books that have been written on poultry genetics.

One is :  Genetics and Evolution of the Domestic Fowl by Lewis Stevens (1991)

You can get a used paper back version of this for under 20 dollars.

Another is : Poultry Breeding and Genetics (Hardcover)
by R. D. Crawford (Editor) 1990

This is a very good book but is not cheap (200.00).  It may be out of print.

Another recent book is An Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl: by Brian Reeder (Paperback - Feb 8, 2006)
You can get a used book for around 20 dollars.

Reeder is not a professional scientist and sometimes makes statements that I strongly disagree with. He does not follow protocol that is acceptable by the scientific community.

Do a search and find the cheapest vendor.

A good site to go to is

http://marsa_sellers.tripod.com/geneticspages/page0.html

I did have a site but the server erased the site and I did not back up my work.  :(

To discuss genetics on a form, you can do it here or another site would be The Coop

Register at the following site and then go to the forum home and Genetics and Breeding.

http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=agree

I would suggest you learn as much as you can about the E locus then go from there.

You can do a search on The Coop forum and can find all kinds of information that will answer your questions. Dr. Ron Okimoto  is very knowledgeable and a professional scientist. There are also others that are very knowledgeable.

If you want to find papers or abstracts from scientific journals use Google Scholar or use

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez and query an authors
name. Start with Carefoot WC, Campo JL and Smith JR Jr.

That will keep you very busy. If you have questions post them at the ABC forum and I and others here will help you.

Good luck
Tim
