Housing, Health & Hatching / New pens
« on: June 09, 2019, 10:52:05 PM »
As most of you know, I have not had birds (life happens :( ) in a few months. Boy do I miss them! We will be moving in Oct to Northern, AZ Kingman area. I will have more birds by spring. My worry is predators. Where I previously lived we had snakes, coyotes (although they didn't get on our property!) scorpions, and neighbor dogs. Were we are moving, we have coyotes, bobcat and mountain lion. Over the winter we will be building new pens for the very anticipated new arrivals. My concern is their safety. Any suggestions on what materials to use? I have never had to deal with these predators before, and just want to make sure that my babies will be locked up like Fort Knox! Thank you!

Exhibiting & Promoting / Exhibitor Points

I am a little confused as to how the point system works. I had a pullet win Best AOSB at our show in October. Does that mean Ch Ameraucana? That is not written on the coop card.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Feeding to get ready for show
« on: March 16, 2017, 08:58:47 PM »
As you all know I am pretty new to this breed and am planning to start showing in the fall. I will be picking up a few 1 to 2 month olds this Saturday, from a local breeder who also shows her birds. My question is, do they need to be fed differently than my other birds? Right now they are fed all flock feed, fruits and veggies several times per week, and every one in a while whole oats and a little sweet feed mixed in. What do you all raise your show hopefuls on? Do you start your program when they are very young or wait until closer to show time?

Housing, Health & Hatching / Egg color?
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:54:42 PM »
As you all know, I am new to this breed. My 2- six month old pullets finally laid eggs today. Both on the same day. Yes I was excited, then kind of let down. The color is so light. So I got out my nifty egg color wheel, which I also received today with my new member packet (yeah!) and they were a #16. Is there any chance they may darken a bit? I have had EE's that lay bluer eggs! I think the answer is, it is what it is, but wanted to make sure. Thank you!
