Breeding / Re: Project Color: Mottled Ameraucana
« on: September 15, 2013, 06:52:59 AM »
I am working on something like a mottled project.  I don't know if there is a separate gene for mottled and mille fleur type patterns.  I'm working on the mille fleur type pattern with more white... like the calico cochin.  I have seen both mottled and mille fleur patterns in Swedish Flower Hens.  I have seen legs with dark pigment, mottled dark pigment, and no pigment.

Here is another article about the retrovirus:  http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-09/find-blue-chicken-egg-congrats-your-chicken-has-virus?dom=tw&src=SOC

BTW, Olive Eggers are already a popular fad in California.

I did know a person who kept the birds in the house, but they also got to go outside during the day, most days.  She didn\'t let them out until late morning.  I think she also had some kind of indoor coop, but I saw photos of them free ranging on the kitchen floor.  No diapers.

Read \"The Hunger Games\".  I know there is a movie out, but I haven\'t seen it.  I read the book.

Even subsistence hunting and gathering is a crime in the book.

feral - \"having returned to an untamed state from domestication\".

If it is domesticated and in your pasture, it wouldn\'t be considered feral, would it?  I thought feral was referring to escaped animals like cats, horses, and hogs that were running loose and acting wild on public or other people\'s properties.

Truly wild hogs would be native species and be subject to hunting laws.  Feral hogs running loose would NOT require a license, etc. to be hunted.  Anyway, that\'s how I would interpret it.

Someone once told me to trim the feathers around the vent - that sometimes the feathers are just too thick and fluffy.

Very interesting mess of a color!  I wonder if he might have the mottling gene.  He sure has white and black, both.  He also has dark legs!

My mind remains open, so open that I believe stuff is falling out and lost forever.

I have an accidental barred Am cross if anyone is interested in him.  Cuckoo marans and Black/Lav split.  No slate spots but a very light slate undercolor.  (I\'m not working on the barred.)
