Breeding / A tinsel blue?
« on: August 29, 2014, 01:36:55 PM »
I need some opinions and answers here.  I haven't been breeding as long as some of you.  It has taken some years to get my blues males without leaking and my two year old blue cock was my first.  I would say the cape on my blue cock is a flat dark blue or black, no beetle green and he's a bit on the dark side.  The female a little less dark blue.  Here are some pictures of the male offspring from this mating, about 17 to 18 wks old.  It may be hard to see in the pictures, but the guy shines like tinsel on a christmas tree!  I haven't seen this before.  It is quite striking, imo.  I have viewed him in sunlight, shade, and even under a flashlight.  I  don't see any beetle green, just a shiny, glossy black?  Blue?
Has this been seen before?  What could cause it?
My concern is, is it a fault?  I have another young blue male from a different hen also showing a bit, but not anywhere near as much as this guy.   I think I will go try to pull some individual feathers from him to get a closer look.

Exhibiting & Promoting / What's going on in Michigan?
« on: May 04, 2014, 12:39:49 PM »
I saw this posted in other forums.  Do you have any input on the subject John?

http://www.inquisitr.com/1235774/michigan-loses-right-to-farm-this-week-a-farewell-to-backyard-chickens-and-beekeepers/#mZgSXTk0GbcYZaLO.99

Does this mean it is now determined on the local level, not the state?  That would be such bad news for many to have to give up their livestock.

Our nearby big town of Fayetteville, just passed an ordinance that now allows the keeping of so many chickens, ducks, bees or goats by city residents.  Seems like they are wanting to get into "sustainable living" or some type of community gardening.

Btw, I really wasn't sure where to put this topic.  Maybe we need some type of general subforum.

Breeding / What causes this?
« on: August 10, 2013, 10:51:45 AM »
When viewing the picture of this rooster I noticed that his muff seems off color.  A reddish brown.  It looks like he may be molting, but I don't know if that muff color is a result of worn feathers or if it is the result of a gene he is carrying.  I also noticed it in a picture of a hen from the same flock.  Is this sort of the same thing that happens to blues when their feathers get worn and some are off color?  Only this is what it looks like in blacks?  Is this from carrying a wrong gene?  Any ideas?

Exhibiting & Promoting / Question re: Meets
« on: August 14, 2012, 05:02:13 PM »
Do you have to be a member of the ABC or other club to show Ameraucanas at a meet?

I am trying to find out contact information for someone interested in showing at the Fayetteville, Ar meet in November.  I went back to a previous post and after re-reading it I am wondering if one has to be a member of a club to show poultry?

Breeding / Plumage question
« on: July 14, 2012, 02:50:53 PM »
Can someone tell me, how long does it take before you can tell if your blue cockeral is going to be a cull on his color/pattern?  I have to reduce my flock and these cockerals are 13 to 15 wks old now and I'm just unsure whether this guy here is just a bad blue or the dark coloring hasn't had time to develop fully yet?  He is from a splash/ blue cross.  My memory is just not serving me well right now.  I can't remember how last year's blues developed.  :P

Breeding / Do these look correct?
« on: May 23, 2012, 11:46:27 AM »
Looking for some expert analysis on these chicks.  I had my first 4-H'er get a few chicks from me and I did my best to help him pick out ones I thought could be show birds.  Here are some pics he sent me of one black and a blue.  There was one black I gave him that I was particularly impressed with, but he didn't get me a good pic of it.  I think they are adorable, but I know that doesn't count.   ;D

Exhibiting & Promoting / This is concerning...
« on: March 29, 2012, 06:10:55 PM »
Not chicken related yet, but if there are any Michigan breeders out there, maybe they can keep the rest of us updated on this?  I know feral hogs are a big problem, but if this is true, I don\'t think it\'s the right way to handle it.

The ISO to be imposed on April 1 considers all but eight breeds of hogs to be feral. Those eight breeds are used in confinement buildings. That means the DNR can drive onto farms and homesteads that raise other breeds of swine and kill them on the spot...
Why should every American care about the DNR\'s move to kill Baker\'s and other Michigan farmer\'s hogs? You should be scared that whatever YOU hold dear will be on the next ISO. I look at our heritage Dexter cattle and heritage chickens and wonder when an ISO is going to wipe us out. Think it can\'t happen to you? There are ten states waiting to see how the Michigan DNR ISO turns out.

Breeding / Is this a Silver?
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:57:52 PM »
Had a 4-H question from a youth whether his bird can be called Silver?  It looks like it\'s an Easter egger, but having no experience with this color or juvenile plummage, I said I\'d ask the experts.  I was told the bird is sixteen weeks.
Thanks

Breeding / recessive white
« on: August 12, 2011, 01:38:09 PM »
Ok, I have a question regarding this.  Now I have hatched LF blacks in the past that as young ones sometimes show white tips in the wing feathers or one white feather in the wing.  That has always disappeared as they molted.  But now I have hatched a couple of blacks that are showing white in places I haven\'t seen before.  They are now 16 weeks old and one cockeral is showing tiny white feathers coming out near the comb and I have a pullet with just a trace of white tipping or lining the beard feathers.  It doesn\'t look like it is silver or gold.  It looks white.  Is this recessive white showing up?  And that\'s a bad thing right?

Breeding / tail carriage
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:54:49 PM »
Regarding the angle that cockerals carry their tail, does age and enviroment play any part in how they carry it?  Could they carry low when they are growing or low in the pecking order and it would change when that changes?  I\'m trying to thin the flock and have just a couple that look right and many that are horizontal or down low.  Which I find surprising since their sires have good carriage.  Just wondering if they are intimidated by the more dominant cockerals in the flock? They are approximately 13 weeks old now.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Another vaccination question
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:37:52 PM »
Anybody here vaccinate for Newcastle/IB?  My chicks are now 3 and 4 weeks old, still isolated and I bought the vaccine for it, but it is live.  The B-1 type.  Is there any danger to the chicks with this? Are they carriers after vaccination?  Or only temporary carriers?  Should I vaccinate my older birds with this live vaccine?  They have only had the dead version and that was last year.  At the time, I didn\'t realize they needed to be prepped with a live vaccine and the vaccine was a combo MG, Newcastle, IB and pretty expensive.  If I don\'t vaccinate the older birds, they wouldn\'t be at risk from the younger ones once they are mingled would they? And do you really have to revaccinate for this every few months?
Thanks

Ameraucana Marketplace / Is this split wing?
« on: May 01, 2011, 07:21:53 PM »
These are pics from a couple of years back, but I have always wondered, is this what split wing looks like in chicks?  They are between one and two weeks here I think.  The first pic is how the wing hangs on the bird.  The other\'s I have spread out.

Housing, Health & Hatching / can anyone give me some tips?
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:08:57 AM »
I\'m going to vaccinate my chicks for Mareks.  Haven\'t done it before and I am just sure I\'m going to kill one by sticking a needle in its neck.  I tried the other day to see if there was enough loose skin about the neck to make this possible and I just don\'t see it folks.  Are there any tricks to the trade to make this as painless for me as the chicks?  Appreciate it.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Has anybody seen this in their hatches?
« on: April 17, 2011, 03:17:58 PM »
I\'ve had a few chicks hatch that appear to have some kind of nervous disorder.  It happens right after hatch.  They pull their heads over their backs and fall over on their backs.  They can\'t stay up.  The head stays back.  There appears to be a few tremors also.  I don\'t think it is a disease because it doesn\'t spread and I have had normal chicks hatch from the same parents in the same hatch.
Is this a genetic disorder?  Where the chick gets a copy from both parents and his siblings do not?  Anyone seen this in the large fowl Blacks and Blues or know what it could be?

Breeding / Some hidden genes.

I have one pair mating of LF blacks this year that is producing chicks that look black, blue and splash.  I should raise some up that appear blue and splash to see what they really are.  Even if one of these blacks were a blue they shouldn\'t produce splash.  If they both carry white they could produce white chicks, but the down on the chicks looks kind of grayish...their wing feathers are coming in white.
