Ameraucana Marketplace / Stockton Show premium list is out. Who\'s coming?
« on: December 22, 2010, 10:52:54 AM »
The 64th Annual Winter Show will be January 29-30, 2011 at the San Joaquin Co. Fairgrounds in Stockton, CA.

I plan on attending.  Entries close January 10, 2011

In 2009, there were a lot of losses due to theft.  In 2010 it was a lot better.  I still don\'t plan on showing any bird that I can\'t do without.  So, my lovely cockerel from Harry will not attend.  He\'s the only lavender boy I have.  Ah, well.  Some bantams will be there.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Stockton Show 1/30/2010
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:23:03 PM »
There were a lot more birds shown as Ameraucanas this year than last year.  I met more folks and sold fewer birds.  Fair trade-off.  _^

Best of Breed Large Fowl was a blue pullet owned by Robin Taber.
Reserve Best of Breed Large Fowl was a white cockerel owned by Bridget Riddle.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Straw coloring?
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:27:05 PM »
I just returned from the Stockton show.  There were probably a dozen bantams and a dozen large fowl and half a dozen exhibitors.  There were some great birds and some that were DQ\'ed.  I had a brown red bantam hen that was DQed for \"stubbs\".    Where she decided to get those, I\'ve no clue.

ANYWAY, I noticed a cream light brown Dutch bantam that had very interesting light gold straw color.  I finally found someone who understood the genetics of it and they told me is was a mutation that dilutes red without diluting black.  It is recessive so once you have it, it will breed true.

VERY interesting.  Can you see the color in this photo?  The back in the light brown is dark red and the hackles are orangish.  They have bred the cream gene into the mille fleur and the result is a solid cream with black.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Lyne\'s black gold blog

I have youngsters from my lighter roo and I was surprised to get cockerels that were the very light straw that Mike called lemon in my large fowl project.  These cockerels are obviously all bantam, so there was no sneaking around in the pens by the LF roo!  I also got a white pullet which I was sort of expecting because the roo carried dominant white.

Why is it called dominant white if it can be carried recessively?

Ameraucana Marketplace / BLR variety...
« on: May 11, 2008, 08:22:46 PM »
My first generation in the bantams actually got a blue laced brick red.  I also have a F1 generation in the large fowl with the F2 in the brooder.

Anyone else want to play?  I hate to have all the eggs in one basket so to speak...

Ameraucana Marketplace / Quest for \"straw/gold\" in the black gold
« on: May 03, 2008, 04:45:57 PM »
Working on the black and blue gold in both large and bantam, I am having a heck of a time finding the right shade of gold.  I need to spin some straw into gold, obviously!

These three are what I had.  The first roo is from a buff crossed to brown red, but he is too orange.  The second young cockerel is what Mike calls more of a lemon, which I thought was exactly the color of straw.  The blue roo is about the same shade as the light straw gold.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Incomplete dominance of birchen over wheaten
« on: January 22, 2008, 04:21:00 PM »
Is there a phenotype (visual appearance) that shows a bird carries both the birchen gene and the wheaten gene?  ...or birchen and any of the other E locus guys?

When I crossed the buff on my large fowls some of the hens look more wild type.  They might also carry the birchen, so it would really help if you could actually see incomplete dominance of birchen in the actual bird.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Iowa City available birds?
« on: November 15, 2007, 04:22:21 PM »
I have transport available back to California from Iowa City.  Are there any black golds with straw coloring or brown reds that are too light available?  I need the straw coloring in both bantam and LF.

My email is lyne@bryngyld.com

Ameraucana Marketplace / need straw colored black/gold
« on: November 12, 2007, 10:53:17 AM »
I looked back at all my photos of black gold birds and the only straw colored hackles and rumps I have are on blues.  I need to bring the straw color into my flock because it\'s doesn\'t appear to be present in my gene pool.  Argh.

I\'d be very grateful to anyone that could help me with stock.

If not, what would be the best breed/variety to bring in for the proper color?  If I brought in the Golden Phoenix, I\'d have color but don\'t know if I could ever lose the tail length.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Maran x blue egg experiment
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:29:28 PM »
I think Michael crossed some Marans with Ameraucana and got olive drab colored eggs.  I was wondering if anyone has kept those 1st generation crosses to see what the blue will be in the 2nd or 3rd generation.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Finally made a webpage!
« on: July 02, 2007, 09:40:14 PM »
I finally had some time (blew out a knee) and an internet connection at the same time.  I made a webpage for my black and blue golds.  They\'re the best photos I\'ve got... and the best birds I\'ve got... still working...

Ameraucana Marketplace / Lavenders in the UK.
« on: April 02, 2007, 11:55:45 AM »
Has any of you lavender developers thought of importing some from the UK?  I saw this listing on eBay for hatching eggs.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120103962042&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX&refitem=160101905857&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget

If the link is too long, you can search.  The fellow spelled it    \"6 Lavender Aruacana hatching eggs\"

It looks like they have a bit of a topknot besides muffs and beards and they don\'t seem to care about leg color.

Ameraucana Marketplace / AOV?
« on: January 29, 2007, 09:28:44 PM »
I\'ve been thinking... what if we had an AOV category?

First of all, it would give all those enthusiastic new variety promoters somewhere to go with their \"product\".  Many potential varieties that fail might still gain an Ameraucana enthusiast and breeder.

I\'m thinking we might encompass the Easter Egger popularity and perhaps concentrate on encouraging \"breeding them up\", as many of us have done.  Essentially we would be less discouraging and disparaging and perhaps benefit from the popularity.  How many of us have owned them?

Anyway, it would officially give judges and breeders somewhere to \"put\" the well loved Easter Eggers.  I can envision a new reply, \"Yes, it seems to be an Ameraucana but from a farm flock or production line.\"  \"You could buy a SQ rooster from me and upgrade your flock.\"

Hmmm?
