Would this be from the Pg gene?  Would have been nice to see the day old picture of the this chick's down coloring.

Don,  I was thinking about somehting that would show the beginner if they hatched the proper down color for the chicks to cull the ones that would create problems for them later like:
E/E Black
E/e Black
E/E^R Black  ect

Same with the Whites ect other colors

Hatched a lot of average looking chicks till I rotated my males and now I have the ones that clique much better but sort of late in the season.  Finally got my lavenders back on tract like they use to be before I lost the best in 2008

Breeding / Re: Cross beak - genetic, environment...what?

The cross beak is a recessive gene and can show up any time over many years.  You need both parents to donate the gene for the chick to have it.

I have found that cross beaks are genetic.  It only happens in certain strains.  I have also found that when bantam blood was added it is more evident.  Had two different pens of a certain color hatch at the same time since I had them separated for several hatches only the one strain hatched with cross beaks and the other stain had none.  I recommend to cull the ones that produce it.  I have not seen it to happening from incubation although if you only get one it may be possible but to have several and you hatch different strains and only one strain has this defect it is most likely the strain.  You can breed it out if you wish to take on the effort of test mating but I only recommend it if you are testing a small amount of birds otherwise you will be test mating for the whole hatching season.

I have been breeding the Lavender for at least ten years including Lavender Orpingtons.  I am sorry as since I have started my own strain of LF lavender Ameracauana (besides making the lavender aruacana) I can not agree at all with calling them Self-Blue.  My line is different than John Blehm that also created his own line.  I seldom sell since it appears the monetary portion is greater than the improvement of the color.

Brad,  I personally do not vaccinate.  I would prefer to breed genetically to eliminate any susceptibility to any condition or disease.

Well most Post Offices do not seem to notice where from or to chicks are being shipped unless they get some kind of memo to impose some kind or restrictions..  Heard the large hatcheries are still shipping chicks all over the US not positive if this information is correct.  Ebayers are still shipping eggs all over the USA also as well as other sites.  There are many loop holes that would need to be sealed to really correct any problem that would occur.   Then there are the birds that died and are they all really being sent to the state labs for testing in every state.  The backyard flocks generally do not get reimbursed if there is a positive but the commercial operations generally all do so where is there an incentive to send a dead bird to the Labs.  They are still selling birds on some of the auction sites and even Facebook so is the Post Office really monitoring shipments you must aak yourself.

I believe breeding blues to lavenders was a myth that was created by the Brits for the Orpingtons.  Blue to lavender is very confusing for the beginners.  You go on some of the Brits Orp sites and you will see several of them had crossed them.  Their birds are exhibiting lavender with the blue capes on the males which is an obvious give away that they crossed blue with lavender.

Blue to lavender I believe is better than black to lavender because the blues are suppose to be silver base and the blacks should be gold base.  I have noticed that lavenders come in two shades which may constitute that the darker ones carry a gold base and the lighter ones carry the silver base.  I prefer the lighter colored lavenders over the ones that are darker pewter colored birds.  This is only an observation without any scientific study.

Depends on the strain.  I make sure all my breeder birds I have no matter what breed have small combs on the males.  Still possible to sex them at young age on most birds.
