Ameraucana Marketplace / Sales Area at Indianapolis

Booting this up because there had been some requests for birds.  I will not be there but perhaps you could tell some perspective buyers what you may have available and what time the sales will start.  Fri? Time? ect.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Feathers between toes

The ideal situation for this bird would be the soup pot, the next best place would be for someone\'s backyard pet stock.  If at all possible get a good black male which seem to be somewhat easier than to get a good lavender male.
As someone has said use what you have available and if that is all you have then use him.  You will be able to cull a good portion of the chicks at day old because a percentage will hatch with visual stubs and can be culled immediately.  Please do not put them back into the gene pool and sell them to someone for their backyard pet stock.

Ken,
If you live in the NE part of USA I will give you a male of either lavender or split,.   You did not say what state you were in.   Sorry, no shipping.   Harry

Breeding / recessive white

I have had blacks show up with mottling in the adult plumage but they are lavender splits and as one can see the original Lavender EE has produced a lot of odd colors when it was used in the Orpington projects.
This is why if you have black splits lavenders they should only be used to be bred to lavenders and NOT introduced into anyones black lines.  I have seen people using the blacks splits and introducing them into their black pure lines.  Why I can not understand the reasoning to add untested birds into a line that is near pure and took so many years to perfect close to the standards.
All the blacks splits not used for my lavenders end up at the auctions so they could be either eaten on enter the infamous backyard type chicken breeders flock for just fun.   Good luck cleaning up the mess.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Leg Bands vs. Wing Bands

Well I toe punch but the state gives bands when you test them which generally fall off.  I am looking for a tatoo kit to tatoo them permanently with their state ID;s.

Perhaps we could have a club survey here like others had surveys with clicking on the dot.  One for the name Lavender or Self-blue (which has much confusion in many breeds as to what they have been calling self-blue).  And another on the same thread as to should we support the APA and ABA without giving the members a voice.  Sorry,  I am not a member of the APA or ABA.

John,
Right now I have no one who will take care of my birds if I go away.  I may have someone to put some birds in for me though if I am lucky.  My father does not live that far from Indy but the issue is taking care of what is at my home.  I am hoping to hatch early and cull early then maybe I can cut back to the bear minimum where there would be enough water(if not freezing at that time) and feed for several days.

Wow,
Crystal and Dak you both are off to a good start.  I really like my broodies to take care of the chicks.  I am starting to save some eggs but that means I have to keep them inside till Mar.  I hope you both have some luck with this hatch.  You will be ready for all the fall shows coming up in 2011,

Dak,
That is great they started to lay for you so soon.  I still have younger pullets than that and hope they will start by Mar 2011.  Mine are too friendly because I am afraid I will step on their legs and brake them.  They are always under my feet.  Good luck this season and hope you hatch many, many chicks.

Crystal,
Very happy that you hatch some nice birds with potential.  I am also happy that several people I sold hatching eggs to joined the club and they also got some blacks from other sources to improve them.  Good luck everyone.   Harry
