Past Meets / 2024 Bluebonnet Classic
« on: January 09, 2024, 09:19:05 AM »
We had a great meet this weekend at the Bluebonnet Classic in Navasota, TX.
There were about 100 Ameraucanas, 10 Ameraucana exhibitors and over 1000 birds total.
A really well run show.
Max Strawn won the whole show with a large fowl black cock bird.
I only have pics of that bird and the RB, Res AOSB blue cock bird by Max as well.

Exhibiting & Promoting / 2023 Bluebonnet Classic
« on: January 11, 2023, 10:21:08 AM »
We had a show this weekend in Navasota Texas, the Bluebonnet Classic.  Reported to be the biggest show in Texas.  We can't practically leave Texas for shows right now, so it felt like a bigger deal.  Lots of nice birds from Max Strawn, Aaron Hickson and family, and Makenzie Wroten (surely misspelled). I also showed some birds.
Max's black cock went on to be champion large fowl as well.
Nice show, try to get there next time if you're in Texas.
Here's some pics..

We had what will be my last show of the year in Comanche last weekend.
It was just me and Aaron Hickson, but you get judged 4 times so it feels like a good a good consensus.
There's no junior show.
Pics to follow.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Cold Weather Tolerance
« on: February 01, 2022, 10:44:11 AM »
I live in Fort Worth, Texas.  And I know most of you live in colder areas than me.  We have some cold weather coming and I wanted to ask some advice.  I know in general the birds can handle much colder than I probably will ever get here, but I have a question.  I have some pens built up off the ground.  They are covered on top and back and open in front and ventilated below. The birds stay dry in there just fine, but I'm concerned how much cold they can take like this.  Last winter we had worse cold and for longer, I moved them all out as it was my first winter with these cages, but would kind of like to know how cold they might be ok in here.  Pic is of the pens. Thanks Yankees!

We had a nice show this weekend in Navasota.
Great little venue with fancy wood floors, good bbq and nice people.
*Note a few of the open bantams cooped out before I could get a picture of the last show.  But they are mostly in the first show. There are no pictures of the Green Card Open Bantams.
Here's your winners!

Breeding / Leakage in hackles of black large fowl
« on: December 15, 2021, 04:24:31 PM »
I'm sure I could search this up and figure it out, but with all the experts here I thought I'd just let y'all tell me.
Ok, so I had a breeding pair of black LF last year.
Some of the males from this hatch show hackle leakage, some do not.
Obviously I will not use those with leakage.
Their father did not show leakage and he is now dead and gone, rip.
So I know the female can carry the leakage and not display it.
But does that mean she carries it or can it not be determined with this information only.
Also the sons that do not show leakage, can they still carry it?
She's a nice hen and I'd like to use her, but don't want to keep the leakage.
Thanks

We had a good show this weekend in Shawnee Oklahoma.
Daniel Cook's black cockerel took Best of Breed as well as AOSB and Reserve Large Fowl.
Brad Stonebarger of Triple S Farm took home the top prize with BB and Res AOCCL with a black cock bantam in open and Gracie Stonebarger of Triple S Farm took the BB and Res AOCCL with a black cockerel in juniors as well as Best of Breed large fowl with a black pullet.  Good job to Daniel and the Stonebargers on some nice birds and good win.

Breeding / Egg Fertility
« on: June 02, 2021, 12:56:42 PM »
I sold a group of 5 hens and 1 cock to a guy a few moths back.  All black LF.  I had them already in that group along with a couple more hens.  They are all last spring birds, so a little over a year old.  I hatched from this group for a couple months and everything was good.  I sold him the cock from the group and about half the hens that he chose.  Since then he's had problems with egg fertility.
At first I suggested it might be the movement to the new place, change in diet etc.
Then a few weeks later it's even less.  I suggested maybe egg storage but didn't really know what else to consider.  He's hatching well from other breeds at this time so I figure probably storage isn't a big issue.
It's not all hot here yet like it usually is, but I've stopped hatching so can't really comment on my fertility at present.  I offered to swap him the male but he wants to try some more.
What might you consider telling someone having the same problem?

News and Information / APA Newsletter Drama
« on: April 20, 2021, 01:15:18 PM »
I got my APA newsletter and when I tried to go back and read it, now it's gone.
I got the email about the retraction, now seeing the drama going on on FB.
I don't know what it's about or trying to stir up trouble, but wouldn't mind a discussion or explanation just to keep in the loop.

Is this everyone or just me.  Screenshot as attachment.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Bantam Blue Cock Picture Wanted
« on: April 16, 2021, 01:23:14 PM »
I hate to say it, but we have a lot of good picture on the ABC website.
But one that comes up fairly quickly is a crazy looking bantam blue cock.
I don't know who's that is, and I'm not looking for a fight.  He just looks kind of crazy.
I'm sure he was/is a fine bird in real life but that picture!
Maybe they are pretty rare and nobody has better, or maybe I'm out of line.
I thought I'd ask, I don't like how he looks at me, lol.
