Breeding / Re: Chick color black/blue

If I recall correctly, Paul Smith told me that the darker chicks generally end up with better lacing.

I'm looking for a Lavender bantam cockerel or pair. Will anyone have any at Shawnee next month?

I entered Lavender Bantams last year and this past winter as "Lavender" and didn't hear anything negative or experience a problem.

To my novice eye it looks like you've got a pretty good pullet there, Sharon.

You'll see the same type of sores on the pea comb and facial area. Just a little harder to detect on birds who don't have large combs and wattles. I had a couple of cockerels come up with it back in January. They both had the dry pox version and recovered fairly quickly. Vaccinated my two flocks (they're located about 8 miles apart) and haven't had any issues since.

This website may help you with some of your questions. We're planning on being at the Arkansas show and hope to see you there.

I use a digital postal scale with a piece of carpet on top (to keep the bird from slipping on the slick surface) to weigh my birds. You could also use it to weigh your eggs. Stromberg's is one source for egg scales.

At our local Producers Co-Op 20% Starter/Grower has gone from $11.05 from the start of the year to $12.15 last week. At least it has animal protein in it.

I've used a mixture of olive oil, glycerin and witch hazel as a dressing for combs and the legs. There is no odor and drys quickly. However I have found it a little difficult to apply and work into peacombs. Recently, a member from another breed club told me he uses Neosporin-type products on combs and wattles. He says it is easy to apply and work in, shines nicely and the anti-bacterial properties are a bonus.

Breeding / A lesson in tails....
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:52:52 PM »
It does get confusing at times looking at show winners and then trying to reconcile them with the SOP. Hopefully, in those instances the judges are picking the best out of the Ameraucanas exhibited and not going with some personal notion of how the breed should look.

I know it doesn\'t need to be said but it\'s up to us to not show any Orpington-type or pinched tailed birds.

I had a couple of pinch tailed pullets this year. Didn\'t know what to call it but knew I didn\'t like it.

I\'m paying $10.95 a 50# bag for 17% layer pellets at the local Producer\'s Co-Op. Lay crumbles are slightly higher but are mostly dust.

Debbie - click the poster\'s name and it will transfer you to their profile. You can then find out where they are located (if that information is provided). Of course, I just now figured that out for myself before I replied!
