Website Changes / New Breeder's Directory format
« on: February 15, 2015, 04:41:50 PM »
Ok, I've been working on a more interactive online Breeder's Directory and have uploaded the latest work-in-progress.

Please check your entries. I will also be going through each and every entry to make sure there were no errors in transmission. But, every entry had to be re-typed and that leaves a lot of opportunities for error.

Check it out!  Let me know how you like it.  The next step will be to convert the printed version to a more spreadsheet type style.

Oh..just fyi - the default sort order is alphabetical by last name. If you need to return to the default, just refresh the page.

Edited to add - I just went to re-check some things and found the format was hosed due to a font error. It fixed itself after I refreshed again, but if you get to the page and the table columns don't look like they are lining up - just refresh. I'll keep researching the problem.

Update 2/16/15 11:35AM (EST): The interactive breeder's directory is now working in Internet Explorer. Please remember to refresh your browser so the latest version of both the .html and the .css files are loaded. The sort function will not work if you do not have javascripts enabled. - Susan

Breeding / Ameraucanas vs EEs
« on: February 01, 2015, 07:50:14 AM »
I want to include an article in the next bulletin about the differences between the two and then post the article on the website. I know all the most salient points - not to standard, green legs, different combs...etc, but what are the points that should be covered in an article like this?

I might also mention that this is a good time to be thinking about subject matter for the next bulletin - the Summer bulletin. I just might be tapping you on the shoulder for the next one. :)

This is not final yet, but Beth and I have emailed back and forth and are now waiting to hear back from the Show Secretary, Mark Beasley.

This would be the very first Ameraucana meet, of any kind, in South Carolina! I hope we can pull it off.  lol

Website Changes / Website Gallery
« on: January 08, 2015, 02:46:19 PM »
Ok, I've made some changes to the bantam gallery only. It takes a lot of time to get all those pics (6 for each variety) formatted properly and I didn't want to go through all that for large fowl, until I get a consensus from you if you like this new format.

Instead of clicking on a thumbnail and displaying the large pic in a new page or tab, I've used a hover format. When  you hover over the thumbnail pic, the larger pic is displayed without leaving the current page.

There are pros and cons to this type of format, but tell me what you think.  If the general consensus is favorable, I'll move forward with the large fowl gallery.

Website Changes / Website and Forum
« on: January 05, 2015, 07:43:20 PM »
I will be working with the configuration of the forum tonight and tomorrow morning, so you might see something flash, then go away, or it might stay.  The tweaking of the colors is so it will match the new website that will be installed sometime late tomorrow. I wish it was one of those things I could play with off-line, and then just load the finished product, but without loading some heavy software, that's not possible.

I look forward to everyone's comments and suggestions about the new changes, but please wait until it is all done. I will post a comment in this thread when the forum work is complete.

The website changes that will be installed late tomorrow are mostly just appearances - bringing a little more consistency between the pages and a few simple "bells and whistles". After those changes are installed, then the real fun begins! I have lots of ideas about how to bring the website more current and functional.

Thanks everyone...for your much looked for comments and suggestions and for your patience during the transition.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Looking for Wheaten/blue wheaten cockerel
« on: October 28, 2014, 08:51:25 PM »
I've culled most of my flock that hatched this year and am now looking for a really nice quality wheaten or blue wheaten LF cockerel.  I am in Aiken, SC and would love to find one within driving distance, but would consider shipping one in.

I'm not in a big hurry - this is for next springs breeding program (which doesn't begin until January, but I'll need some time for quarantine)

You can post here or email me at samouw@gmail.com

Thanks!

Exhibiting & Promoting / Lucasville Meet
« on: October 07, 2014, 02:49:44 PM »
I would love to see pics from the National meet this past weekend in Lucasville.  Any body get any good pics?

Of course, I'm partial to the wheatens and blue wheatens, but I'd love to any of the winning birds!

So, c'mon folks - let's see your pics :)

I've gone through some of the threads here and found a lot of good suggestions, but I thought I'd just start a new thread. :)

Currently, all my pens are 8 x 8 or bigger and house either a trio or a quad or more.  Each pen has a separate enclosed area where the chickens can get out of the weather and where the hens can lay their eggs.  This style works well for breeding, but not so well if I'm trying to get conditioning and training for a few show prospects.

Please note that I do not have a small barn available (yet), so whatever I build for show conditioning has to be free standing and out in the elements.

So...here are my questions.
  • What is your setup for show conditioning/training? Feel free to share pics - I'd love to see them.
  • How long before the show season do you put birds in the show cages?
  • What does your training consist of and how is it accomplished? (eg. do you use food to train the chickens to come to the front of the cage or is it just a matter of getting them used to being handled?)
  • And, finally, do you change the diet of the birds in the conditioning cages, and if so, to what?

Thanks for your input. :)
