Breeding / Lopped comb
« on: February 01, 2021, 09:55:59 PM »
One disqualification we need to watch for in our Ameraucanas while breeding them towards the standard is a lopped comb, which is a comb that falls over to one side.

Thank you to the owner of this splash wheaten cockerel for letting me use her photo for this educational post.

An American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection book, which goes into full detail on the breed standard, the recognized color varieties as well as defects and disqualifications in poultry can be purchased at the following link:

News and Information / Re: Ameraucanas made the list!

I have a Continental Cargo single axle 12'x6' v-nose trailer with swing out rear doors and one side door. I considered purchasing a double axle but came across a great deal on this one.

Extra side vents and an enclosed pop-up vent on top were installed to ensure adequate ventilation. Additionally, cages were installed on both interior walls with a walkway in the middle. The built in cages allow the birds a little more freedom of movement and ease feeding/watering on long trips. (I know Jerry De Smidt carries a lot more birds than me just using dog crates.) Extra dog crates/kennels fit underneath the built in cages and down the walkway. The v-nose has plenty of space for a small feed bin, prep box, chairs, etc.

In 2019 I towed the trailer from Texas to The Ohio National (a 16 hour trip one way) without any issues. A double axle may be a little more stable but I'm happy with the performance of this trailer.

Thank you for your feedback Aaron. I appreciate it.

I welcome recommendations regarding trailers. I have been encouraged to get one that is dual axle. If anyone has any advice, please send it my way!

Yea, I'm about to be in the trailer market as well.
Is that supposed to be total number of birds exhibited for the entire year?
That doesn't sound right.

I believe the number is for sanctioned shows. Unfortunately 2020 was an uncharacteristic year for showing poultry. Fingers crossed for a better showing season in 2021!

Stephan, I like to use Blue Ribbon Show Shampoo on my birds. I give a bath 4-5 days before the show. Start with a tub with shampoo, then rinse by dipping in 3 more successive tubs of water. I found that 10 gal totes filled about 3/4 full works well for LF. Start with the first tote filled with shampoo and warm water. Then dip the bird in the second tote of warm water, then the 3rd tote of warm water, then finally the 4th tote of warm water. Then I use a bath towel to dry the bird off. Put the bird in a clean cage and let it preen itself. They recommend not to use a hair dryer as this will sometimes curl and misshape feathers. You can do several birds and when the water starts to get fairly dirty, just start over with new shampoo and rinse totes. On show day just a touch up with a damp rag if needed. I get my Blue Ribbon Shampoo from Smith Poultry And Gamebird Supply out of Bucyrus KS.(just south of Kansas City, Kansas). They also travel and sell at various poultry shows. Good luck at your County Fair!!!!!!

Gordon, is this still where you get your show shampoo? A member is on the lookout for the Blue Ribbon shampoo.

Breeding / Rust vs Brassiness in Splash Ameraucanas
« on: January 17, 2021, 04:42:46 PM »
A few folks that are participating in the large fowl splash approval process have asked for pictorial examples of the difference between rust and brassiness.

Brassiness is a serious defect that is defined as a light yellowish metallic cast particularly in the hackle, wingbow and saddle of the male that can be hereditary or affected by exposure to sun rays or certain items in the diet. A defect is anything short of perfection.

Rust is a disqualification that is reddish brown in color. A disqualification is a term applied to a deformity or defect that is serious enough to debar a fowl.

Hopefully this post will be of help to you as you breed your large fowl splash Ameraucanas towards the proposed standard.

Thank you to the APA for giving me permission to use excerpts of the standard when creating educational posts. An APA Standard of Perfection book can be purchased at the following link and goes into detail on the Ameraucana breed, the standard for the approved varieties as well as defects and disqualifications in poultry.

The Ameraucana Breeders Club is currently seeking approval for the splash variety in large fowl. Our first prequalifying meet was held in Norman, OK on 11/7/20 and it was a success. Our second prequalifying meet for the large fowl splash variety will be held at the Heart of Ozarks poultry show in Fayetteville, AR on 11/6/2021. The ABC will need four head in each class (C/H/K/P) for the next prequalifying meet to be successful. Please make plans to raise large fowl splash this season and help us with our newest color variety approval process!

The ABC has received numerous questions regarding breeding and conditioning the large fowl splash variety for the approval process. The splash variety can be produced from breeding blue to blue, blue to splash and splash to splash. A blue ameraucana bred to a blue ameraucana will create 25% splash, a blue ameraucana bred to a splash ameraucana will create 50% splash and a splash ameraucana bred to a splash ameraucana will create 100% splash.

A few of our members have asked about the beak color of a splash ameraucana. The standard will call for the beak to be horn to black. We have also received questions about the splash plumage color. The splash plumage color is created from two copies of the Blue (Bl) gene. The Bl gene is an incomplete dominant diluting gene. Incomplete dominance means that one allele is not completely dominant over the allele it is paired with. This results in a phenotype that is a combination of both alleles. This explains why blue and splash chicks produced in a blue, black and splash breeding program are not all the exact same shade of blue or splash. Some birds may be lighter in color and others may be darker in color. The standard will call for the splash ameraucana to be sooty white with blue splashes. Some of the blue splashes may appear to be black, but if you thoroughly inspect the splash areas you will find that they are in fact blue. The splash males will have a slightly darker head, neck, back and saddle as a result of their sexually dimorphic plumage. The shanks of the splash Ameraucana should be bluish slate.

The disqualifications for the large fowl splash ameraucana are any appearance of rust in the plumage and more than 50% blue in the plumage. Rust should not be confused with brassiness. Rust is reddish-brown in color. Brassiness is a light yellowish metallic color particularly in the hackle, wingbow and saddle of the male. It is a serious defect that may be hereditary or affected by exposure to the sun or certain items in the diet. An American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection book can be purchased at www.amerpoultryassn.com. Hopefully this post will be of help to you as you breed your splash ameraucanas towards the standard. If you are interested in helping the ABC with our color variety approval process browse through our breeder’s directories to locate hatching eggs, chicks, started birds and adult birds!
