                                                         Hatching Eggs

In this post we are going to publicly answer many of the questions that I’m often ask by new poultry breeders.

I enjoy sharing what I know and have most of my life (almost 60 years-Wow that time has past fast!)   This characteristic began many years ago with hogs and plants.  The past 16 years it’s primarily been with the Ameraucana breed of chickens.

I have been asked “What do you do to your hatching eggs?”

First they are marked with a pencil a coded number to represent the breeding pen which produced them.  The numbering system ranges from 1 to 15 for each variety group.  Wheaten, blue wheaten and splash wheaten are one group.  Black, blue, splash and lavender are the other variety group that we presently raise.  We use to raise silver and buff which would be two more  variety sets of numbers.  Only fifteen breeding pens can be tracked using this system.  We have had more than 15 pens of black, blue, splash for several years, so we came up with a (+) plus system several years ago.  The breeding pen numbers recorded on the eggs are +1 to +15.  Behind the number is a letter.  Capital “B” for black only, “b” for blue, “SP” for splash only, and “W” for the wheaten varieties.  Under the coded number is the date laid.  It is written also in code to make better use of time.  Example:  April 15 is written 415-(tax day!).

The eggs are gathered daily and stored in a large up right freezer that has had it’s thermostat removed and replaced with a thermostat from an air conditioner-window unit.  The temp is set to be maintained at 62º to 64º F.  We also use this appliance for storing our boar semen.  The thermostat switch out tip came from an AC friend of mine about 20 years ago.  Our first unit, an old refrigerator went bad about six years ago and was replaced with the freezer that we are presently using.  Neither a freezer nor refrigerator can be set high enough temp (64ºF) without changing the thermostat.  The unit will be turned off long before the temp is adjusted high enough to maintain the hatching eggs.

The hatching eggs are placed inside the unit each day in half gallon metal cans, which are used to hold them, while they are being gathered.  About once a week the hatching eggs are removed from the cans and placed into egg cartons.  They are pre-sorted by variety (wheaten, blue wheaten), (lavender), (black, blue, splash) as they are removed from the cans.  The hatching eggs now in cartons are placed back into the cooler and held at 62º-64ºF until the Sunday before setting day.  This is delayed to Monday on May 4, 2015 due to Memorial Day.  Then they are removed from the unit and sorted by the breeding pen number.  Once all hatching eggs are sorted, they are inventoried to see how many can be used from each breeding pen to fill the incubators. Presently we have two #1202 GQF for one hatch, then one #1502 GQF and two Styrofoam incubators for the next hatch.  The GQF each hold 288 eggs and the Styrofoam each hold 41 eggs.  When we are in full production we set 576 eggs, then two weeks later 370.  Unfortunately this year we have had issues trying to get the 1502 made in 2008 set correctly.  We have had two hatch failures.  The first failure was to capacity with 370.  Hopeful it is corrected now!  We will address this later in the next topic post.  We are trying to keep to the subject-Hatching Eggs.

Once the eggs are inventoried to see how many are available, they are culled to get down to the number needed to fill the incubators.  Egg color, shape, size, % hatching from breeding pen in previous hatch, and parent stock are considered when culling the eggs.

Now that the eggs are selected for incubation, they are washed in a solution consisting of 6 ½ oz. of Oxine/gallon water.  This solution is mixed ahead of time needed, and stayed with the eggs inside the cooler, so it is the same temp as the eggs!  If the eggs look clean they are just dipped in and out.  This is a very important process to keep from getting a bacteria in the incubator, plus several poultry diseases can be spread via the egg.  Once they are disinfected they are placed in the egg racks.  A bath towel is spread out, on the island counter top.  The trays of eggs are laid on it and covered with another bath towel so they can gradually warm up to room temp.  This washing takes place on Sunday night.  (Monday night when 3 weeks before holidays-Marin Luther King, President’s Day and Memorial Day).  The eggs are ready to be placed inside the incubator early Monday morning (usually between 6 and 8 AM-depends on how late it was completed on Sunday night).

I know many poultry breeders are too concerned about storing the hatching eggs too long.  It’s a common thing for us to start saving them two weeks before setting them.  If the eggs are good and fertile-hatching well, they can be stored at 62º-64ºF for several weeks before dying in the egg.

Consider this scenario.  A hen is laying an egg every other day.  She hides out a nest, then starts setting.  Approximately twenty-one days after she starts missing she shows up with twelve or more chicks!  This use to be a common thing for us many years ago.  We use to cage all breeding cocks and turn all the hens out after egg collecting was over for the season.  We have had eggs to hatch that were three to four weeks old.  However, I will agree that the sooner they can be set, the better the hatching percentage will be!  I also know that the eggs can be turned side to side inside the cooler to help keep them better, but we don’t mess with them other than what has been shared.

The next writing will take up with the incubation, hatching and chicks!

Any questions or comments are welcome!  Lets have a fun time with this poultry hobby and share info!  Anyone want to share “How/what you do with your hatching eggs?”  Please do!!!

We recently completed the most productive SC District Ameraucana meet that has been held since I have been involved with Ameraucanas (1999)!  We had 10 exhibitors from 4 states show 65 head of LF in the open class, one exhibitor showed 5 open bantams, one Jr. exhibitor showed 9 Jr. bantams, and 2 Jr. exhibitors showed 9 LF, for a total of 88 head by 13 exhibitors from 4 states.

The open large fowl were judged by Diana Dahir.  There were 37 head of blacks shown by 8 exhibitors.  The best variety, best of breed, best AOSB, Champion LF and reserve over all show champion (over 3,000 head entered) was the cockerel shown by M & J Farm (Mike Geis & Jan Geis).  Congratulations to Mike and Jan on their outstanding cockerel!  Also on their recent marriage!  This is the second year in a row that a black Ameraucana cockerel has won the Champion LF and on to win higher honors in the over all awards in Shawnee at the Oklahoma State Poultry Federation Show.  The RV black was a pullet also owned by M & J Farm.  She was selected the RB.

The blue class had 15 head shown by 4 exhibitors.  Max Strawn had the BV and RV on two pullets.

The blue wheaten class also had 4 head shown by 2 exhibitors.  Peggy Taylor had the BV and RV on two pullets.

Max Strawn showed the only Lavenders, two pullets which received the BV and RV.

Jeffery & Cheryl Vance showed the only splash, a pair which won BV on their pullet and RV on their cockerel.

The wheaten class had 5 head shown by 2 exhibitors.  Paul & Angela Smith won BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.

The open bantams were judged by either Jim Sallee or Anthony Ashley.  Five very nice bantam Ameraucanas were shown by Gus Malcolm.  Gus’s blue, splash, white and wheaten pullets won BV.  His wheaten cockerel won RV.  Best of breed was his wheaten pullet and Res. Breed was his white pullet.  It was great to have bantam Ameraucanas this year at our district meet!  Gus also showed and outstanding black LF cockerel in the open show which won second place in the impressive class!  He was one of my top picks of the class for potential class winner before the judging began!

Gus’s older brother Walter Malcolm showed 9 bantams in the Jr. show.  Jacob Bates judged the Jr. bantams.  Walter’s white, silver, and buff pullets won BV.  His blue cockerel won BV and one of his blue pullets won RV.  His blue cockerel won BB and his buff pullet won RB.

The Jr. LF class had 9 head shown by two juniors and judged by Richard Peters.  There were two blacks shown.  Walter Malcolm had BV, BB and best AOSB on a very nice pullet.  Matthew Smith had RV on a black cockerel.  The remaining seven head were shown by Matthew.  Matthew’s blue wheaten, lavender, and blue pullets won BV.  His blue cockerel was RV.  His wheaten cockerel won BV and RB.  His wheaten pullet was RV.

A special thanks to everyone who participated in the SC district meet, to make it the best one held!  Peggy Taylor requested a meet at the Texas State Fair, which will be set for a state meet.  We briefly discussed other potential shows for our 2015 district meet, which is yet to be decided.  We have had one at Fayetteville, Ark. and one at Sedalia, MO., all the others have been at Shawnee, OK. since I have been director.

  Pictures will be posted ASAP

Exhibiting & Promoting / Great News for 2015 Ameraucana National Meet
« on: November 06, 2014, 10:25:12 AM »
Great news from Jacob Bates came Monday after the show-2015 will be a two-day double judged show instead of squeezing it into one.

66
The Arkansas State meet & special meet were a great success for our Ameraucana breed, with 5 exhibitors from four states exhibiting 56 LF in the open shows.  One Jr., Matthew Smith showed 10 LF Ameraucanas in the Jr. show for a total of 66 head of Ameraucanas as there were no bantam Ameraucanas shown this year.  It will be different at our national meet next time!  I’m hoping for at least 100 head of each!  Great News from Jacob Bates came Monday after the show-2015 will be a two-day double judged show instead of squeezing it into one.  That means we will have an extra evening and Sunday to enjoy talking poultry!

The first judging was designated to be the Arkansas state meet and it was judged by Art Reiber.  There were 30 head of blacks shown by 5 ABC members!  Max Strawn of Texas won the top two spots with a cockerel and cock respectfully.  Max’s cockerel also won BB and Res. AOSB.  Max’s cock also won RB.  Max also won the top two blue with a pair of pullets from 10 blues shown by 3 members.  There were two blue wheatens shown by 2 exhibitors.  Sharon Caywood of Arkansas won BV on a pullet and Paul & Angela Smith of Texas had RV on a pullet.  Clif Redden of Kansas showed 4 brown red.  A cockerel took BV and a pullet won RV.  Great to see Clif get a start of the scarce brown reds!  I feel they will become popular in the SC district in the next few years.  Max showed 3 lavender which the show management insisted on calling self blue.  Max’s pullet won BV and his hen RV.  Sharon Caywood showed the only splash a pullet which took BV.  There were 6 wheatens by 3 members.  Sharon won the top two spots with a cockerel and pullet respectfully.

The 2nd judging, a special meet, was judged by Walt Leonard.  The black class was still won by Max’s cockerel which was chosen BB and Best AOSB.  The RV saw a change as Clif won with a pullet which also won RB.  Max’s blue pullet topped the blue class.  The RV saw a change as Paul & Angela won with a cockerel.  The blue wheaten class had a flip flop as Paul & Angela had BV and Sharon’s pullet had RV.  The brown red’s stayed the same with Clif’s cockerel BV and his pullet RV.  The lavender class also stayed the same with Max’s pullet and hen winning respectfully.  The splash class also stayed the same with Sharon’s pullet winning BV.  The wheaten class also had a flip flop of the top two.  Sharon’s pullet was selected BV and her cockerel RV.

The junior show was judged by Lewis Hinkle.  The juniors only have one judging.  They show for showmanship in the afternoon, rather than having a second judging.  Disappointed that other juniors didn’t show any Ameraucanas this year.  It will be different at our 2015 national!  Matthew Smith’s placings were black cockerel BV, BB and Res. AOSB.  His black pullet was RV.  His blue pullet was selected BV and his cockerel RV.  He also showed a blue wheaten and lavender pullet-both BV.  He showed two splash pullets-BV and RV.  His wheaten cockerel was selected BV and RB.  His wheaten pullet was RV.

Over all a great set of Ameraucanas were shown!  Looking forward to having our 2015 national at Fayetteville on November 7 and 8.  We are in the process of blocking rooms for ABC members.  Sharon Caywood is working on finding us a good restaurant for our dinner and awards distribution.  Make plans to attend this national show.

Paul Smith
SC district director.

Photos of all BV and RV will be posted ASAP.

Exhibiting & Promoting / 2015 Ameraucana National Meet Decided
« on: October 13, 2014, 10:25:05 PM »
We have had several e-mails along with the forum poll to help me decide which show to choose for our 2015 national Ameraucana meet.  Many ABC members have proclaimed either show Sedalia, MO. or Fayetteville, ARK.-that they would participate.  A couple have said neither because they are both double judged one day shows.  A few have said both are too far to travel for us to attend.  A few have said one would work out for them but the other one would not work.  I dislike being caught in a no win situation!

Since we have been to Sedalia, MO. twice I have decided to give Jacob Bates an opportunity to host our 2015 national meet at Fayetteville, ARK. at the HOTOPA show on November 7, 2015.  Check out their web site www.hotopa.com .  This is a very well run show in an adequate facility.  They hosted our 2012 district/Ark state Ameraucana meet.  We are planning on showing there Nov. 1, 2014 for our Ark state/special Ameraucana meet.  We will work on the behind the scenes work for our 2015 national while there.  We hope many ABC members will attend!

Exhibiting & Promoting / 2015 Ameraucana National Meet
« on: September 21, 2014, 09:09:48 AM »
I'm seeking input from the forum readers.  We have been in pursuit of a poultry show to host our 2015 national Ameraucana meet for several months.  Sedalia, MO. has held our national twice by two different poultry clubs.  The first national ever held in the South-Central district on Oct. 15, 2005.  The other national meet was held in Oct. 2012.  The Missouri State Poultry Association has agreed to hold our 2015 national on Oct. 24.  It is a one day double judged show.  We sent request to Hutchinson, Kansas; Ill-MO in Highland, Ill.; Frankfort, Kentucky; Shelbyville, Kentucky; and Fayetteville, Arkansas.  There are only two clubs from these interested in hosting our ABC national meet which normally increases a show about 200 head.  The other one is the Heart of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  This is also a one day doubled judged show.  They can hold 1200.  The largest that they have had is 1000.  It is the first Saturday in November 7, 2015.

Any and all input on these two, Sedalia, MO.; and Fayetteville, Arkansas poultry shows would be appreciated.  We have shown at both!  Need to know if you would bring some of your Ameraucanas to support our 2015 national!

The SC District meet and Arkansas State meet were completed November 3, 2012 at the Heart of the Ozarks poultry show.  This was a very good, well run show, held in a nice facilities at the Fayetteville, Arkansas fair grounds.

Sharon Caywood of Fayetteville, ARK. had the top Ameraucanas in the LF open show.  Sharon’s black pullet took top honors in both judgings.  It may have given the judges a head ache, if Clifton Redden had his RB black pullet at last week’s national meet here.  This was Sharon’s first show!  It is great to see new ABC members start showing and join in the fun!  Congratulations Sharon!  Sharon’s black pullet also won best AOSB.  Sharon’s black cockerel was selected RV, RB and res. AOSB.  Sharon also had a very nice blue cockerel which won BV blue.  Angela and I had RV blue also on a cockerel.  Matthew Smith had BV blue wheaten on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  Matthew also had BV wheaten on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  Matthew had BV Lavender on a cockerel and Angela and I had RV on a lavender pullet.  The first judging, our SC district meet was judged by Sam Brush.

The second judging-the Arkansas state meet was judged by Steve Jones.  Sharon’s black pullet won BV black, BB (best of breed), best AOSB.  Sharon’s black cockerel won RV and RB.  Sharon’s blue cockerel won BV.  A blue pullet shown by Paul & Angela Smith won RV blue.  Matthew Smith had BV blue wheaten on a pullet and RV on the blue wheaten cockerel.  Matthew’s wheaten pullet was chosen BV and his wheaten cockerel was RV.  The BV lavender was a pullet shown by Paul & Angela.  Matthew’s cockerel was RV lavender.

The Jr. show was dominated by Colten Hardesty.  Colten purchased 3 Ameraucana chicks from Sharon Caywood.  All three were shown in the Jr. show.  Colten’s black cockerel won BV, BB, best AOSB, Champion LF and Res. Jr. over all.  Colten’s black pullet won RV, RB and res. AOSB.  Colten also had a blue pullet which won BV.  Congratulations to both, Colten for doing an outstanding job selecting and growing the chicks into champions, and to Sharon Caywood, for breeding them.  Lewis Hinkle judged the Jr. show.

Sorry this is so late!  I’ll try to be more prompt at the next shows.

  Photos coming soon!

2012 Ameraucana National Show report & Missouri State Meet report
By:  Paul Smith

The 2012 Ameraucana national meet is now history!  This was the second Ameraucana national to be hosted by the SC district since the development of the breed.  A special thanks to the Missouri State Poultry Association for hosting our show at the Sedalia State Fair Grounds on Oct. 27.

Diana Dahir did a great job placing the bantams in the first judging and the LF in the show’s second judging.  This created some confusion and delays in presenting the Ameraucana awards, but everything was worked out before the awards were passed out.

Doug Connally judged the LF Ameraucanas in the first judging for the Missouri state meet.  Art Rieber judged the Ameraucana bantams in the second judging for the Missouri State meet.  A double judged show confirms my thoughts, that a show placing is one person’s opinion-Jerry DeSmidt, added “for that bird on that day”.  Diana’s and Doug’s placement of the LF were very similar with only six additional photos required to have a full set of BV (best variety) and RV (reserve variety) for the two shows.  They both chose the same two birds for the BB and RB (best of breed and reserve breed).

However, Art and Diana disagreed so much that I had Matthew take another full set of photos of the second bantam judging.  The total number of Ameraucanas was down from what we usually have at a national meet.  There were 38 bantams and 68 large fowl for a total of 121 including the 5 head of Jr. large fowl shown.  Jensen Pierson’s black K was selected BB and best Jr. AOSB (all other standard breed).  Cody Grantatier had the RB and Res. AOSB on a black K purchased from John Blehm at a day old.  The best blue was a pullet shown by McCormick Snyder.  The five Jr. LF were very nice and would have placed well in the open show.  It is required for Jr’s. to participate in a showmanship contest at this show.

Five ABC members from three states showed the 38 bantams.  Robert Walchak of Holmen, Wisconsin took the top two places in both the black and white class with a cockerel and pullet respectfully Robert also, took the top two spots in the wheaten class with two pullets.  Jerry DeSmidt of Pulaski, Wisconsin won the blue class, also with a cockerel and pullet respectfully.  John Blehm of Birch Run, Michigan took the top spots in both buff and silver varieties also with a cockerel and pullet respectfully.  John also showed the top two lavender, a pullet and a cockerel respectfully.  The BV splash was a pullet shown by Jerry Segler of Sparland, Illinois.  The RV splash was a pullet shown by Jerry DeSmidt.  The top two brown red were a pullet and a cock respectfully shown by Mike Gilbert of Holmen, Wisconsin.  There weren’t any blue wheaten bantams shown this year.  Diana chose Robert Walchak’s white cockerel as best of breed and reserve AOCCL (all other comb clean legged).  Robert’s wheaten pullet was chosen reserve of breed.  Congratulations to Bob and Teresa!  We all missed seeing you this year.  Thanks for sending the great Ameraucanas with Mike.  Sorry to hear about the passing of Teresa’a sister.

Nine ABC members from six states showed 68 head of large fowl.  The black class contained 24 head.  Clifton Redden of Columbus, Kansas won the blacks with a very nice black pullet.  Clifton and wife Linda, once again proved that there is still room at the top in our great breed of Ameraucanas.  This was their second show and first Ameraucana meet.  Clifton’s black pullet was also selected reserve AOSB.  Jerry DeSmidt had res. Black on a cock.  John Blehm showed the top silvers a pullet and cockerel respectfully.  John also showed the best buff, a pullet.  Jerry DeSmidt had the reserve buff with a pullet.  Mike Gilbert showed the top brown reds a cockerel and pullet respectfully.  Matthew Smith of Gainesville, Texas showed the top two blue wheatens and top two wheatens, both a cockerel and pullet respectfully.  The wheaten cockerel was purchased as a day old chick from John Blehm.  The best lavender a pullet was shown by Paul & Angela Smith of Gainesville, Texas.  Matthew Smith had the reserve on a cockerel.  Jerry DeSmidt had the top whites a hen and cock respectfully.  The Arne Schmidtz traveling trophy went to Jerry DeSmidt on the best white.  Jensen Pierson of Wilmington, Ohio showed the top two splash a pullet and cockerel, respectfully.  Jensen’s pair of splash won the AOV (any other variety) class.  The top blue was a hen shown by Paul & Angela Smith.  She was chosen best of breed, Champion Ameraucana and best AOSB.  The reserve blue was a cockerel shown by Jensen Pierson.

Jerry DeSmidt had the highest scoring display on LF blues with 138 points.  Ken Olsen did an excellent job with the egg contest.  Jim Miller and Jerry Segler judged the egg contest.  There were a total of 10 entries.  Robert Walchak had the best bantam pullet eggs.  Jerry DeSmidt had the best bantam hen, best LF pullet and best LF hen eggs.  Thanks Ken for all your work on this project!

Michael Muenks supervised the ABC table, and presided over the club meeting.  President Jean Ribbeck wasn’t able to attend, and Mike Gilbert was in the emergency room at the local hospital.  The long drive was too much on Mike’s back.  Since the show, we have received an e-mail from Mike, he and Mary had an eventful trip home, but finally made it.  Fellow believers-remember to pray for Mike!

The ABC business meeting was held in the corner of the show barn.  It was somewhat noisy but out of the cold wind.  The meeting was called to order by Michael Muenks.  The normal-setting of agenda, welcome and introductions, 2011 meeting minutes, and secretary/treasurer’s report were performed.  Brief discussions were held on the club’s point system, new handbook, printer, election by acclamation results, and 2013 national meet.  The lifetime achievement award was accepted by Paul Smith for Barbara Campbell who was unable to attend.  The Jr. awards were passed out.  The open show LF were almost completed by meeting time, but delayed due to the second judging of Diana Dahir.  The meeting was adjourned and photos of the ABC group in attendance were made.  Angela Smith, David Blehm, Matthew Smith, Michael Muenks ran the raffle to assist with the club’s expense to hold a national meet.  Special thanks to everyone who donated and helped make it a success.  A seminar for Ameraucanas enthusiasts was planned, but not held due to lack of time, Mike Gilbert’s health issue, Jes and David Kemp absent-due to David’s health issue, and lack of a warm quiet place to hold it.  This is a great idea and we hope to hold one next time.

The Missouri State meet was held in conjunction with our national meet.  Doug Connally judged the large fowl.  The BV black was a pullet by Clifton Redden.  Clifton’s pullet also won RB and res. We are now accepting and receiving orders for our potential show quality day old chicks hatched in 2012.  We will have 8 hatches-at two week intervals-starting Feb. 21, 2012 and ending May 29, 2012.  We tried starting earlier in 2011 and going longer with poor results-so this year we will work with what times have proven to be successful hatches for our area.  Presently we are about 30% booked for the season.

We offer potential show quality, straight run (unsexed), day old, large fowl, Ameraucana chicks in
black, blue, splash, wheaten, blue wheaten, splash wheaten and lavender also large fowl SC Rhode Island Reds (buyer’s choice of variety/varieties-not ours).  There is a 10 chick minimum so they will stay warm enough during shipping.
