I know we have been successful in the silent auctions for Off-Site bidding especially.  But what do you members prefer and think will make more money for the club on-site at the National or even bigger meets for the ABC?

I am not sure how the individual items bid for this past show in Greenville.  Susan, what are your thoughts about the bidding for the spring chicks and eggs?  Did we have multiple bids and do you feel that we reached maximim prices for most of these?

And while we are here, would more people be interested in Egg Shows in the spring shows while the birds are laying better?

It was Great to see all the old faces and meet lots of new folks too.  I know several folks are still traveling to reach home today.

I was happy to see so many great birds there even though the weather and time of year was still causing so much molt.  And there were many folks that had great wins in both of the shows, new and old exhibitors alike.  Congratulations to everyone again!  I am sure that Paul and Angela will provide a great show report once they get back on their feet at home.

Now if we could just get someone to decide where the next National was to be held.

The Childboards do not indicate new discussions on threads. So check out the info for the National meet often and inidicate if you want to donate for the awards or auction.  And the deadline is Sept 14th, coming up really fast.   Good Luck everyone.

News and Information / Jeff and Sherry Vance's rebuilding begins
« on: August 07, 2018, 09:31:14 AM »
This is the same message posted in the member's section last week. I know many folks don't log in, so wanted it to be more visible.  Thanks!   drc

Many of you already know that there was an overnight fire at Jeff and Sherry's place a couple of weeks ago, they think caused by a lightening strike.  Thankfully it did not spread the the surround woods and the adjoinning homes. Unfortunately it took most of their young bird coops, brooders, some of their prized brood pens and about 180 birds. Also they lost a good bit of their field records, a fully conditioned building and all of their construction tools. I know that several folks have offered condolances and some have sent money as well.

Jeff has nearly finished the clearing of the site and is planning a slow progressive rebuild. I know some folks have talked with him about getting his lines of birds rebuilt during the next couple of seasons too.  We all wish them a complete recovery of their lines of both Bantam and Large Fowl AMs.

Anyone that would like to contribute to the new construction can contact the Vances the following ways. And anyone that would like to contribute anonomously is welcome to drop me a note to discuss.  Thanks in advance.    drccash@yahoo.com

Some have had questions about which extra bits people feed during the grow our and pre-show seasons. I am sure that folks have a lot of extra special secrets that they like to use and think it might help their birds progress in a special way. While I've seen cage bird breeders use all type of fruits and nuts, cooked mash and oat/wheat mash.  I personally have not noticed this quite as much in the poultry world. I've seen lots of people offer sunflower and safflower seed as well as oats and rye in poultry feed. Sometimes the birds are reluctant to eat these at first. The shelled seed are usually easier to get them to try at first. Or mix the husked seed with some wet feed or simple oils might do the trick. Another option is to sprout some of these grains until they begin to realize they are good to eat too in their dry state too.

« on: April 09, 2018, 02:21:45 PM »
The SE District now includes the following states - VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, TN, KY.  I think it would be great to have it as central as possible and still attract the more exhibitors.

We have suggestions for the SE District meet to be located in the following locations.  Any members have any other suggestions or want to cast their vote for one of these?

Aniston AL, Oct 13
Moorehead KY, Nov 17
FFF, Winston Salem NC Nov 24
Knoxville TN, Dec 1-2

Edgefield SC, Dec 15 - was added as a meet this past month too.

Please note that the following shows have dates close to one or the other of these.
ABC National, 40 yr celebration,  Greenville OH Oct 6-7
APA National, North American Poultry Club, Shawnee OK, Nov 17-18 (qualifying meet for Self Blue LF)

Members can still request ABC meets for shows that they and a couple of others plan to attend this season, just let me know.  Thanks!    drc

May we all think anew about the meaning of this New Day and inspire us to better days.

    The Apostles Commissioned
19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled,[c] for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

Exhibiting & Promoting / ABC Meets are set for many spring shows.
« on: February 18, 2018, 08:18:16 AM »
Take a look at the Upcoming meets section for the many meets that are set for the next months in your area.  The Upcoming Meets section does not show as updated posts, but there are sanctioned shows set for many areas of the country.

There are shows nearly every weekend in March and there are three meets set Just in NC and SC this next month.    Morganton NC March 17, Blackville SC 24th an Winston-Salem NC on the 31st.

Please let your District Director know if you would like to request a meet in the months ahead. New Meets should be listed in the next ABC Bulletin.   Good Luck with your AMs at the Shows.

There have been numerous discussions on using bands, wing bands and toe punches in the past.  There is plenty of options and advice about banding/marking chicks that you can search in the Forum threads.  Those that use toe punches are well aware of the pros and cons to this process.  The 16 web punch limitation can be extended by combining vee-cuts with toe punches if needed too.  The attached link is available on the ABA website for the first 16 markings.  Some Breeders, number the marks left to right and combinations differently.  But it is great if you can use a system consistently year to year. Paul uses this method very effectively, and he uses both web punches and cuts to mark beyond the 16 designations.  (See Paul's description below)

2018 ABC Nationals Greenville OH / 2018 Ameraucana National Meet
« on: December 03, 2017, 06:00:25 PM »
Updating an old post here.

Plans are being finalized for the show. I am sure the weather will be nice and cool in Ohio for this show

Do we know how much room we will have for Auction Birds or poultry items?

Can people include birds exhibited in the show for the Auction as well?

Anyone have any experience or suggestions for which types of scales work best for use in shows comparing exhibits to the standard weights?

Breeding / Genetic background for the Varieties
« on: August 27, 2017, 02:36:09 PM »
The question is often asked what the genetic make-up or background comprises the different colors of the breed?  There is not a simple answer to these questions.  There is a lot of information in the older handbooks and archival ABC newsletters.  Unfortunately some of the newsletters have been lost.  There were many folks that were involved in the beginning with the different colors of Bantams and then later the Large Fowl versions of these colors.  And in reading these histories, I was surprised at the number of times and different ways colors were started over from scratch by different breeders.  Some because of losses in one form or another, and some because people like to reinvent the wheel.  That being said, there are probably a good number of lines of the same color that have different genetic backgrounds.  That is one of the reasons that problems can arise when crossing different lines, even in the solid color birds.  There are a lot of different genetics that are not visible which can surface with these crosses.  And many new breeders will assume that their youngsters are not pure AMs when leakage or some other problem does crop up.  Its best to stay in one line as much as possible.  And if you do have to cross lines, just be prepared and keep the best records possible so you can address the issue without throwing the whole flock into the EE pen.

I noticed that an ABC meet was accidently listed in the show bulletin.  I have contacted Mark East and asked him to notify any exhibitors that this show was NOT awarded a meet for the spring.  There were too many other shows in the surrounding states and not enough breeders.  It seems that some folks already have their birds in the breeding pens at this time.  Imagine that.     Start Planning for the fall shows now.     Thanks!
