Ameraucana Marketplace / Ameraucana large fowl chicks
« on: February 25, 2020, 08:15:34 AM »
  Spring is here a few days, then winter a few days!  We finally had a decent hatch.  Set 270 eggs 87 self blue, 24 wheaten/blue wheaten, 21 blue, 15 black, 12 splash, 11 self blue splits, 10 white Ameraucana and 90 of our new breed, on Monday Feb. 24.  We are planning on having some in each variety at our national ABC meet at the Mega show in Norman, OK. on November 7, 2020.  Hope you will make plans to show there!  This will be our first national that self blue can be a contender for BB!

  We should have chicks in each of the varieties to share in our April and May hatches.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Self Blue Recognition
« on: January 25, 2020, 05:28:11 PM »
 Five years of effort and lots of persuading others to come and show their self blue large fowl Ameraucanas has finally seen them recognized as a standard variety!  They won the approval vote of the APA board on Friday night (Jan. 24, 2020) at the semi-annual meeting at the Pearl River Classic in Columbia, Mississippi.  Going through the recognition process will cause one to be more appreciative of the varieties already recognized within their breed!

  This recognition process was a joint effort by many who contributed to make it happen!  A special thanks to each:  Susan Mouw for all the paper work which started the process;
the five who signed the affidavit stating that they had bred the self blue for 5 years while maintaining an APA membership:(alphabetical order by last name);  Barbara Dodington, Debra Hogan, Christina Korfus, Jean Ribeck, Paul & Angela Smith;
Oklahoma State Poultry Federation Shawnee, Oklahoma for hosting first prequalifying meet on Dec. 10 & 11, 2016 with (in exhibitor list order) Shannon Rowe, Howard Story, Paul & Angela Smith, and April Howington exhibiting 6 cocks, 6 hens, 5 cockerels and 8 pullets and judge Jim Sallee recommending them;
Dixie Classic Knoxville, TN. for hosting second prequalifying meet on December 2 & 3, 2017 with (listed by exhibitor number) Barbara Dodington, Pat Dukes, Lindsay Helton,
Paul & Angela Smith, Sherry Klaus, and Holly McDonnell exhibiting 5 cocks, 8 hens, 6 cockerels and 6 pullets and judge Brian Knox recommending them;
North American Poultry Breeders Show in Shawnee, Oklahoma hosting our first qualifying meet on November 17 & 18, 2018 with (exhibitor list order) Sherry Klaus, Shannon Rowe, Chris Cross, Paul & Angela Smith, Matt Cooperrider, Lorri Story, Howard Story, and Dakota's Chickens (Dakota Weimar) exhibiting 6 cocks, 14 hens, 5 cockerels and 12 pullets and judge Amanda Stallman for recommending them;
Ohio National Columbus, OH. for hosting final qualifying meet on November 9 & 10, 2019 with (in exhibitor list order) Patricia Dukes, Barbara Dodington, Susan Mouw, Lindsay Helton, Jean Ribeck, Paul & Angela Smith, Eric Waterman, Shannon Rowe, Chris Cross, and Dakota's Chickens (Dakota Weimar) exhibiting 6 cocks, 10 hens, 10 cockerels, and 16 pullets and judge Tom Carey for recommending them;
the entire APA board for their approval vote;
also to each person who purchased self blue Ameraucanas from those who showed their birds in the prequalifying & qualifying meets as these purchases helped to provide for the expense of showing.

  It was truly a team effort which I was honored to be part of!

  Now that the self blue Ameraucanas are officially recognized, we need to make sure we enter them correctly in the shows by using the name self blue and encourage others to use the correct name.  Now they are eligible to win BB (best of breed) and higher, Best AOSB (best all other standard breed), champion large fowl or show champion.

  We also need to watch out for self blue that are getting too light in color (off white with a light blue tint), like APA district 3 director, well known judge, and 32 year breeders of self blue d'Anver bantams, Tim Bowles, said could happen.  Last weekend at the Ft. Worth poultry show a white/self blue cockerel with a yellow beak and red on his wings was placed as BV instead of being DQ, while there were several very nice self blue with correct color in the show.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Chicks for sale
« on: March 11, 2019, 11:14:36 AM »
 We just set our tenth hatch of fall 2018/spring 2019 hatching season. This was our first full incubator with 288 Ameraucana eggs. We have six remaining hatches which can supply more black, blue, splash, white and self blue chicks for chicks orders. The three wheaten varieties are fully booked.
 Now that we have changed out four electronic thermostats (one faulty at purchase) one fan and one heating element, the incubators are working properly. Fertility is good now, so we can produce chicks! Our last hatch will be May 28, 2019. We plan to continue breeding self blue and self blue splits in Ameraucanas and cease all the other varieties, after breeding them for over 20 years.
 Email Paul & Angela Smith, psmith@ntin.net for chick order information and price list.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Looking for Ameraucana chicks
« on: January 03, 2019, 10:30:22 PM »
  We are looking for someone who purchased blacks, or black, blue and splash from us in 2000 through 2010 and have not added anything to them-maintaining the original bloodlines.  We have sold several hundred starts of Ameraucanas during this eleven year period and would like to purchase some descendants of them.  We knew of two flocks as of four years ago, but both have added other bloodlines of Ameraucanas the past 3 years.
  Paul Smith maybe contacted through email psmith@ntin.net or calling 940-768-8405.
  Thanks,

Exhibiting & Promoting / South Central District Meet December 8, 2018
« on: December 13, 2018, 10:53:19 AM »
  The Oklahoma State Poultry Federation Show was held Saturday Dec. 8, 2018 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  The threat of bad weather decreased the show some, but we still had a good Ameraucana meet.  Four ABC members from two states exhibited 23 head of large fowl in the open show, judged by Tom Roebuck.  There were 2 empty coops due to the weather threat.

  Six blue were shown with Max Strawn winning BV and RB on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  Paul & Angela Smith showed one pullet in each, the blue wheaten, wheaten and white class into BV.  They also showed a pair of self blue with their pullet winning BV and cockerel RV.  Twelve blacks were shown with
M & J Farm (Mike & Jan Geis) winning BV, BB, Best AOSB and Res. Champion large fowl on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.

  Three ABC members from two states exhibited 20 head of bantams, judged by Marty McGuire.  There were 15 empty cages due to the weather threat.

  Five blacks were shown with Triple S Farm (Gracie Stonebarger) winning BV and RB on a cockerel and Brad Stonebarger winning RV on a pullet.  Max Strawn showed three wheaten with his cockerel winning BV and pullet winning RV.  Max Strawn also showed four white with his cockerel winning BV and BB, and his pullet winning RV.  No champion over all, as this is only selected at district and national meets.

  No junior bantams were shown.  Eight head of Junior large fowl were shown by 5 juniors with 14 more empty coops due to the weather threat.  Brian Gates judged the show.  Seven blacks were shown with Paige Bolesky winning BV, BB and Res. AOSB on a cockerel, and Addison Bryles winning RV and RB on a pullet.  One blue was shown but not placed due to bugs.

  The Oklahoma State Poultry Federation did a great job with their annual show!  They will be hosting our South Central district meet Dec. 14, 2019.  Make plans to participate by showing some of your Ameraucanas.

Exhibiting & Promoting / 2018 ABC National Meet
« on: September 14, 2018, 08:42:26 PM »
Good news!
Amanda Heitzman said "The deadline to enter the ABC national at the Dayton Fancy Feather Club Show in Greenville, Ohio has been extended to September 21, and she will take e-mail entries!  Angela and I entered 6 pullets (1 each of black, blue, blue wheaten, wheaten, white and self blue).  They were put into conditioning pens on 9-11.  Its been way too hot to risk any earlier by caging them.  A few weeks ago we saw 114ºF!  The early males are not in any condition to show.  Hopefully we will have some ready for the later shows.  Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Exhibiting & Promoting / ABC Meets for South-Central District
« on: June 19, 2018, 08:18:56 AM »
  It is time to start requesting ABC club meets!  I had an e-mail from the Red River Bantam Club show secretary asking us (the ABC) to place a meet.  The show catalog goes to the printers July 15.  Angela and I have requested the RRBC meet several times in the past years, as this is our local poultry club.  This year it is the same weekend Oct. 6, 2018, as our ABC national meet in Ohio.  Angela and I plan to go to the ABC national, so we need a Texas ABC member to request this meet if ABC members want to have a meet at it.  There are several shows in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and Colorado that have been set as ABC meets in the past.  Any show that ABC members plan to show can be requested as an ABC club meet.  Our SC district meet is set for the special APA national meet in Shawnee, OK. On November 17 & 18, 2018.  This show will be our first qualifying meet for large fowl Self blue Ameraucanas!  We must have a minimum of 5 exhibitors in each of the four classes (C, H, K, P) and a minimum of 25 head shown.  The 5 exhibitors must be APA members to be counted.   The Oklahoma State Poultry Federation show will be Dec. 8 in Shawnee, OK.

  We need request from ABC members to set meets!  This is ABC policy so the meet reports will not report none shown, as the ABC member requesting the meet is expected to show.  I know sometimes things happen that can prevent an exhibitor from showing, especially when the meets need to be requested several months in advance of the show to be listed in the show catalog.

  Thanks in advance for your participation and help in making the Ameraucana breed and ABC great!
