The largest poultry show in Texas with well over 2,000 head was held at College Station, Texas-the Bluebonnet Classic on Jan. 7, 2017.  This was a well attended Ameraucana meet, as we had 43 large fowl and 81 bantams in the open show.  The Jr. show had 6 large fowl and 8 bantams for a total of 138 head of Ameraucanas shown by 12 exhibitors.  Ameraucanas have grown out of the show room corner to be one of the main breeds on champion row!

The open large fowl were co-judged by Sam Brush and Jim Crain.  There were a total of 43 head shown by 6 exhibitors.  Eight head of blues were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  Three buffs were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Three head of wheatens were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a cock and Paul & Angela Smith RV on a cockerel.  Seven whites were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a hen and RV on a cock.  Three blue wheatens were shown with Paul & Angela Smith winning BV on a cock and Max Strawn RV on a pullet.  Six self blues were shown with Howard Story winning BV on a pullet and Paul & Angela Smith RV on a cockerel.  Blacks had 13 head shown with Max Strawn winning BV, BB, Best AOSB and Res. Champion large fowl on a cockerel.  Max also won RV, RB and Res. AOSB on a cock.  2017 made two years in a row that a black Ameraucana won reserve large fowl at this large show!

There is always a first time for anything that happens!  First time since 1999-more bantams in the open show than large fowl, with 81 head of bantams shown by 5 ABC members!  Six blues were shown with Max Strawn winning BV and RB on a pullet and Ernie Haire RV also on a pullet.  Thirteen buffs were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cockerel and Ernie Haire RV on a pullet.  Fifteen blue wheatens were shown with Max Strawn winning BV on a pullet and Peggy Taylor RV on a cockerel.  Five self blue were shown with Dorothy Haire winning BV on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  Four silvers were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cock and RV on a hen.  Five splash wheatens were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  Three splash were shown with Mary Laska winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Sixteen wheatens were shown with Peggy Taylor winning BV on a cock and RV on a hen.  Five whites were shown with Ernie Haire winning BV on a pullet and RV on a cockerel.  Nine blacks were shown with Max Strawn winning BV, BB and Best AOCCL on a cockerel and RV on a pullet.  A very impressive set of bantams!  Great to see them fill a whole row and see one on champion row!

The Junior show was down in number shown and exhibitors from last year but the overall quality improved-especially in the bantams.  Bill Hopkins judged the Junior Ameraucana show.  Four blues were shown with Clarabelle Galbraith winning BV on a cockerel and Shyanne Story winning RV on a pullet.  There were two blacks shown by Clarabelle Galbraith with her cock winning BV, BB and Res. AOSB.  Clarabelle’s hen won RV, and RB.

Eight Junior bantams were shown by Madison Budde.  Madison showed two blacks with her cock winning BV and RB, and RV with her hen.  One chocolate cockerel into BV; four silvers with two hens winning BV and RV; and one wheaten cock winning BV and BB.  2016 had several Juniors showing
EELs-none shown this year.

One more successful Ameraucana meet is now history!

The open Ft. Worth Livestock Show is this weekend (Jan. 14 & 15) and the Junior show is next week end (Jan. 21 & 22).

Ameraucana Marketplace / White Large Fowl Chicks
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:47:53 AM »
We have had several white chick request to cancel as they never developed to become an order.  We may be able to supply some white chicks from our fifth hatch of the season, which will be Jan. 17 (Tuesday after MLK Day).  There are 42 white's eggs out of 4 different breeding pens in this hatch.  Chick order information may be obtained by e-mailing psmith@ntin.net .  We are still accepting orders for all varieties of Ameraucanas that we raise.  However some are nearing capacity for the season.  We are just now getting enough eggs to set a hatch every two weeks and plan to continue hatching into June.

Our South Central District meet was a success which created history!  We successfully completed the first pre-qualifying meet with a minimum of 4 cocks, 4 hens, 4 cockerels and 4 pullets for the self blue large fowl recognition process with the APA.  Self blue is the correct and only name that both the APA and ABA are going to accept, as neither organization want some breed clubs incorrectly calling them lavender and some calling them self blue.  There were 6 cocks, 6 hens, 5 cockerels, and 8 pullets for a total of 25 shown by four exhibitors in the self blue class.  Judge Jim Sallee spoke favorably of the self blue producing encouragement of their recognition!  Jim said some of the pullets and hens were very nice, the males like the other self blue breeds have issues.  It was very encouraging to know that Ameraucanas weren’t all alone with male self blue issues!  I soon can see a self blue hen or pullet on “Champion Row”!  A great deal of encouragement came with the understanding that only 25 self blue are required at our two qualifying meets, rather than 50!  Fifty are required for new breeds, and 25 are required for new varieties of existing breeds!  A special thanks goes to Shannon Rowe, Howard Story, Paul & Angela Smith, and April Howington (in exhibitor list order) for making this pre-qualifying meet a success!  Paul & Angela Smith had BV on a pullet and RV on a hen.

The blue class had 12 head shown by 5 exhibitors.  Max Strawn had BV on a hen and RV on a pullet.  There were 4 blue wheatens shown by 2 exhibitors.  Paul & Angela Smith had BV on a cock and Max Strawn RV on a pullet. A pair of buff were shown by Paul & Angela Smith with their pullet BV and cockerel RV.  Their buff came from Christine & Will Kitsch as day olds.  Thanks for our restart of buffs.  Two splash pullets were shown, with M & J Farm-Mike & Jan Geis winning BV and Paul & Angela RV.  Two wheaten were shown, with Max Strawn winning BV with a cock and Paul & Angela RV with a cockerel.  A pair of white were shown by Paul & Angela, with their cockerel BV and pullet RV.  Six exhibitors showed 26 head of blacks, making them the largest class by beating the self blue by one.  The BV, BB, Champion Ameraucana, Best AOSB, Champion Large Fowl and Res. of Show was a black cockerel shown by M & J Farm-Mike & Jan Geis.  The RV, RB and Reserve AOSB was a black hen shown by Clifton Redden.

Max Strawn showed 11 head of bantams. We missed Peggy Taylor, Dorothy Haire, Mary Laska and Ernie Haire especially in the bantam classes.  I see these classes growing in the near future, just as the large fowl classes have the past decade.  Terry Britt judged the Ameraucana bantams.  Max showed 2 blue pullets into BV and RV, two blue wheaten pullets into BV and RV, a pair of wheaten with his pullet BV and cockerel RV, and 5 black with his pullet winning BV, BB and his cockerel RV and RB.  A special thanks to Max for showing his bantams.

No Junior bantams were shown, but this will change in the near future as several ABC members are now breeding bantams in the SC district.  This should make them more available!

The Junior large fowl show has grown.  We had 27 head shown by 12 juniors.  There were two whites with Tala Joyner winning BV on a cock and Lauren Craine RV on a pullet.  Seventeen blacks were shown by 10 exhibitors.  The BV and RB was won by Kash Glass on a pullet.  The RV was a cockerel shown by Dillon Brown.  There were 6 blues shown by 3 exhibitors.  Clarabelle Galbraith won BV, BB and Best AOSB with her cockerel and RV with her pullet.  Two EELS were shown to push the total to 27 head and the grand total of 102 large fowl and 11 bantams.  Jacob Bates judged the Junior large fowl show.

A business meeting was held.  The decision was made to hold our next SC district meet at Fayetteville, Arkansas on November 4 & 5, 2017.  Discussions were held about ABC meets and points.  A special thanks to all who showed and made this a successful SC district meet.

We, the ABC board, has decided to try to meet the 4 cock, 4 hen, 4 cockerel, and 4 pullet pre-qualifying show for large fowl self blue Ameraucanas at the South-Central District meet at the Shawnee, Oklahoma 100th anniversary show on Dec. 10 & 11, 2016.  Everyone who is raising self blue large fowl Ameraucanas is encouraged to enter and bring them to the show!  The ABC has to have two pre-qualifying meets at least 6 months apart before Jan. 2018.  Time is running out, we need your help with this project!  Entries close November 10, and the show will book up, so don't wait until the last day to enter yours!  Please pass the word on about this important pre-qualifying self blue large fowl show!  ABC members, who are on social media like Facebook and twitter are ask to help spread the word!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Exhibiting & Promoting / Red River Bantam Club Show Results
« on: October 13, 2016, 08:50:38 AM »
An Ameraucana Breeders Club meet was held at the Red River Bantam Club (RRBC) poultry show in Gainesville, Texas (my home town) on Oct. 1, 2016.  History was made as the first Ameraucana bantams (since we were involved with Ameraucanas-1999) were shown!  Thirty-two head of them!  It was a great site to see Ernie Haire’s white hen on champion row, as she won reserve AOCCL!  The RRBC only sets up champion row for the bantams, as it is primarily geared for them, even though large fowl, water fowl and guineas are part of the show.  Ernie showed 7 whites, with his hen BV and cock RV.  Blacks were the largest class with 10 head being shown by Max Strawn and Ernie.  Max won BV on a pullet which also won RB.  The RV was a cockerel also shown by Max.  Four blues were shown with Max winning BV on a pullet and Ernie RV also on a pullet.  Two blue wheaten pullets were shown by Max taking BV & RV.  There were 7 self blue (also incorrectly called lavender) shown with Ernie winning BV on a pullet and Max RV also on a pullet.  The self blue are now in the process of being recognized by the APA in large fowl-hopefully bantams will get the process started soon.  Max showed two splash wheaten cockerels to BV and RV.  The ABC has several breeders working with the splash wheatens to get them recognized, hopefully with both large fowl and bantam with the APA.  Sarah Meaders is working with this project.  Anyone interested in helping get the splash wheaten recognized should contact Sarah at sarahmeaders@live.com to get involved.

There were not any Jr. bantams shown-but that will change as they come available!  Ameraucanas dominated the Jr. large fowl show with 12 being shown by 3 Jr. exhibitors.  Craig Rounsaville judged the Jr. show.  Clarabelle Galbraith won BV black on a hen which also won BB and Jr. Champion large fowl.  Matthew Smith showed a black cockerel into RV, RB and Jr. reserve champion large fowl.  Matthew showed a pair of blue with his cockerel being BV and pullet RV.  A pair of blue wheaten were shown by Jessica Reeves with her pullet winning BV and cockerel RV.  A pair of white were shown by Matthew with his cockerel being BV and pullet RV.  Matthew also showed a pair of buff with his pullet winning BV and cockerel RV.  The buffs were purchased as day old chicks from Christine & Will Kitsch.  Thanks Christine & Will for providing a good restart of buff, since we ceased raising buff about 10 years ago.

Jim Crain judged both the open bantam and open large fowl Ameraucanas.  There were 37 head of Ameraucanas in the large fowl show.  There were 8 head of blues with Max Strawn winning BV & RV on two pullets.  Two blue wheaten pullets were shown by Max to BV and RV.  A pair of buff were shown by Paul & Angela Smith.  Their pullet won BV with the cockerel being RV.  Three self blue pullets were shown with Shannon Rowe winning BV and Paul & Angela RV.  Shannon also showed two self blue cuckoo pullets to BV & RV.  One splash pullet was shown to BV by Paul & Angela.  Three wheatens were shown with Max winning BV on his pullet and RV on his cockerel.  Six head of whites were shown.  Paul & Angela won BV with their cockerel.  Ernie Haire won RV with a pullet.  Blacks were the largest class with 10 head.  Max won BV with his cockerel which also won BB and Best AOSB.  Paul & Angela won RV with a pullet which also won RB and Res. AOSB.

The State Fair of Texas in Dallas should have more Ameraucanas than the RRBC show, as it is a few weeks later, and most of the Ameraucanas shown needed a few more weeks to be in prime condition.

Photos of all the BV and RV will be posted ASAP.

Past Meets / Texas State Fair and Red River Bantam Club Entry Deadlines

The Texas State Fair entry deadline is September 1, 2016 for the October 22 & 23 show!  It is an ABC meet.

The RRBC show at Gainesville is Oct. 1 and the entry deadline is Sept. 20.  It is also an ABC meet.

Both of these are Texas only exhibitors.

The Ft. Worth Open Poultry show was held in conjunction with the Ft. Worth Stock show and rodeo on Jan. 23 and 24.  The open show was judged by Paul Monteith from Ontario, Canada.  We had another great showing of Ameraucanas with a total of 77 large fowl and 7 white bantams shown by Ernie Haire.  Ernie’s hen won BV and BB and one of his pullets won RV and RB.  They were judged by Tracy Hill of Texas, as Paul Kroll was snowed in, in New York.  The largest class was blues with 26 head.  Max Strawn won BV and RB on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  There were 23 blacks with Max taking the top two spots.  His cock won BV, BB and Res. AOSB and his cockerel won RV.  Twenty-one whites were shown.  Ernie Haire had BV on a hen and RV on a cockerel.  Three lavenders were shown in the self blue class.  Steve Jones, well known judge and one of the superintendents changed the name on the show cards to self blue, as that is the only name that the APA and ABA are going to accept.  The two poultry associations are tired of the confusion and the use of the incorrect name lavender.  Just as a breed is not a breed, until they say it is-also applies for a variety.  Bobby Meeks Jr. had BV on a pullet and RV on a cock.  Two splash were shown.  BV was a cockerel by Mary Laska and Paul & Angela had RV on a pullet.  Two EEL were also shown.

This was the first year that the Jr. show was held separate from the open show.  It was the weekend prior to the open.  I tried to access the records but was denied.  Hopefully show management will fill out the Jr. show report, which I sent with our entries and a note that I wouldn’t be there to get the Jr. show results due to the change.  2017 is scheduling the open show first and the Jr. poultry show later in conjunction with the Jr. hog, sheep and cattle shows.

Photos will be posted ASAP and hopefully the Jr. show results.

Exhibiting & Promoting / State Fair of Texas
« on: October 21, 2015, 07:57:56 AM »
A special Ameraucana meet was held at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on Oct. 17 & 18, 2015.  This was the largest number of Ameraucanas that the Dallas show has ever had.  Fourteen exhibitors (many of them ABC members) showed 68 head of Ameraucanas and two EELs in the Ameraucana classes.

There were 16 whites shown by 5 exhibitors.  Congratulations to Ernie Haire who won the BV and RV on two white hens.  One splash cockerel was shown by Paul & Angela Smith.  The lavender/self blue class had 6 head shown by 3 exhibitors.  Paul & Angela Smith had BV on their pullet.  McKenzie Sandefer had RV on her cockerel.  The two lavender/self blue were selected best and res.   Dallas had an egg show!  Paul & Angela had 2nd place in the colored egg class and first place in the internal egg class.  EEL eggs placed first and third in the colored egg class.  One more win for the Ameraucana breed!  Ameraucana eggs can be superior and great eating!  Sage Wisner, from Austin, TX.  Judged the eggs and Ben Porter from Morgantown, KY. judged the Ameraucana large fowl.
There wasn’t a Junior show.  Their birds showed with the open class, and no Ameraucanas bantams were shown.

  Pictures coming soon!

Exhibiting & Promoting / Texas State Meet Oct. 3, 2015
« on: October 15, 2015, 10:20:02 AM »
The Red River Bantam Club held their annual show on Oct. 3, 2015 in Gainesville, Tex.  There were 29 head of large fowl Ameraucanas by 3 ABC members plus 2 EEL’s by one exhibitor at our Texas State meet.

Nine head of whites in the white classes was won by Ernie Haire’s hen and pullet respectfully.  Paul & Angela Smith showed the only 2 blue wheatens.  Their cockerel was BV and pullet was RV.  The BV blue was a cockerel shown by Paul & Angela Smith.  Max Strawn had RV on a pullet from the 9 head shown in the blue classes.  Max also had the top two blacks, both on pullets from the six head shown.  Max’s BV black pullet won Best of Breed, Best AOSB and Res. Large Fowl!  Another good win for the Ameraucana breed!  Thanks Max for all that you do to help advance the Ameraucana breed and promote the ABC!  Congratulations!  Paul & Angela showed the only AOV Ameraucanas.  Their lavender/self blue pullet was selected best AOV and their splash cockerel was selected Res. AOV.  Their lavender/self blue cockerel was reserve in the lavender/self blue class.

No bantam Ameraucanas and no juniors showed any Ameraucanas.  Steve Jones did an excellent job of judging the large fowl show!

A good time and visit occurred with all in attendance.  Mary Laska and Dorothy Haire brought Ernie’s white Ameraucanas to the show as Ernie was busy with the Canton sale day.  All Ameraucana exhibitors who were in attendance at the Red River Bantam show are looking forward to the Texas State Fair in two weeks!  It will have even more exhibitors and more Ameraucanas, along with egg and crowing contest.

  Photos coming soon.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Ameraucana Large Fowl Day Old Chicks
« on: October 07, 2015, 09:35:33 AM »
Paul & Angela Smith are now accepting and receiving orders for their day old LF, potential show quality Ameraucana chicks.  We are trying something new this year!  We are hatching now, and plan hatches on Mondays when we have saved at least 12 dozen hatching eggs.  Starting Feb. 1, 2016 the hatches will be on a two week schedule until our last hatch June 6, 2016.  We have tried fall hatches in the past with poor hatch rates due to the prolonged heat wave, which occurs in our area.  This year we had a very short version of the heat wave and I have noticed many of the breeders cocks being active, so we decided to see how many quality Ameraucana chicks we could produce in an extended hatching season.  The lights are on, and egg production increases daily in most varieties.

Our first fall hatch is due to hatch Oct. 19, 2015.  The lavender/self blue are heavily booked from this hatch.  The wheaten, blue wheaten, splash wheaten are heavily booked for all the anticipated fall hatches and possibly into the spring hatching season.  They have delayed their start to lay.  Most are presently in molt.  We should have plenty black and blue with a few splash (some may be recessive white) from our Oct. 19, hatch, to be able  to send out several boxes of chicks, with 39 black, 46 blue and 10 splash eggs in it.
e-mail psmith@ntin.net for details and price list.

Jacob Bates, now has the 2015 HOTOPA show catalog on line!  It may be accessed by www.hotopa.com .  Arkansas is not allowing any waterfowl at their poultry shows due to AI.  Jacob says “that there should be plenty room”, but don’t wait till the entries close (October 23) to enter as there is a 1200 bird limit.  All out of state poultry must have a negative Avian Influenza Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test within 30 days prior to entry for exhibition or sale, and a certificate of veterinary inspection, in addition to the Pullorum-Typhoid paper work.

I recommend that you start searching for a vet that can/will perform the AI test ASAP.  We checked with five in our area before finding one that was willing to do the required test.  The vet clinic that I have used for almost 50 years declined doing the test-even though they did them for us the last time AI was a threat in the US.  That year Angela and I were the only Texas exhibitors at Shawnee, Oklahoma due to the required AI test.  The clinic is now being served by new veterinarians who don’t won’t to deal with chickens.  The clinic that we found that is willing to do the AI test is charging $7.50 per head, a $12 one time fee and $52.75 for the out of state health certificate.  Unfortunately the extra expense may cause our ABC national meet to be smaller in number of birds exhibited, than what I had hoped for.  We are planning on showing 25 to 30 head.  Earlier, Matthew wasn’t going to come/show due to a conflicting hog show, but has decided to attend/show/help with our ABC national meet.

We will need volunteers to help with the ABC table, egg judging, silent bird auction (proceeds go to 2016 national meet awards fund).  Still, accepting donated Ameraucanas for silent auction!  I’ll be busy with BV and RV photos and figuring display points.  Sharon Caywood has researched the area restaurants and is now in the process of booking one for our awards/dinner!  Will announce which one in the near future.

HOPE TO SEE YOU at FAYETTEVILLE, Nov. 7 & 8, 2015.

  Paul, Angela and Matthew
