Breeding / Another rookie question
« on: October 16, 2015, 01:18:46 PM »
I promise to stop with these questions. Will the eggs get a darker blue as the hens mature? My girls have just started to lay and their eggs are very light blue.

Yes Paul I have had good luck raising the chicks. I just got rid of the cockerels except for the ones I'll use for breeding. The birds were almost exactly on the 50-50 you would expect out of a straight run. They didn't have to look very hard to find a good scrap anytime they felt like it. ;D Thanks to both of you for the info I'll examine the girls closer and see if I can tell the difference.

Another quick question, will the eggs get a darker blue as the hens get older? I have gotten 3 eggs to date and they are a very light blue.

Breeding / Rookie question

I purchased chicks from Mr. Paul Smith this spring and he had to substitute some Blue Wheaten chicks to complete my order for Wheaten chicks. There was no problem identifying the cockerels but not so with the pullets. Can someone please tell me if there is a way to tell the difference in the pullets.

Thanks for the help. I did find quarts at Smith Poultry Supply. I will give the Tek-Trol a try. I bought a GQF cabinet  with electronic controls a couple of years back and have not come close to the getting the hatch percentage as I did with my styrofoam incubators. I hope this helps

Is tek-trol available in smaller amounts than 1 gallon sizes?

Has anyone tried the tool used for castration to stretch the rubber leg bands to get them on the chicks? It does a good job stretching a small rubber band over a calf's testicles.

Mike, I do like the sweeter heaters a lot even though they are a little pricey. I think they will be much safer than heat lamps and hopefully more dependable. I have chicks due in May from Paul Smith and I don't want something like a burned out bulb devastating my investment. So I'll start saving my pennies to get a sweeter heater or two for the new arrivals.

Has anyone had experience with the screw in ceramic heaters? They are advertised for reptiles, but I was wondering if they might be a good alternative for a brooder.

It seems that I have waited too long to buy chicks this season, but if you have any please let me know. Older birds would be considered in a reasonable driving distance. I live in North Alabama.
