Breeding / Re: Information on the Chocolate Variety - Q&A
« on: September 02, 2015, 03:46:55 PM »
I love the chocolate project. I have several people that are growing pullets from me and they're looking very nice.

But Im worried about irresponsible breeders that wont cull. Sooner or later there will be chocolate pullets popping out from all black flocks.

Ive been very selective on who I sold to, but I think we might have in consequently damaged the black gene pool just a tad.

Or I Can be totally wrong haha

Ceasar,  The thread said that he used Black Australorp with a white male, probably trying to get a larger size with the solid black.  The Austrolorps do have white skin and red ear lobes but lay brown eggs.  But they also are normally a good size, fairly short body type and medium tight feathers.  I remember seeing some that had really nice green sheen and nice wide feathers along the way as well.  I am sure that they were looking for other possible qualities also.  Given the nice blue color of most Black AMs today, the brown egg genes must have not created much of a problem.

Thanks Don !

crossing the black Ameraucanas with Australorps which was done in an attempt to improve their quality.

Why cross to Australorp? Are they white or yellow skin?

I would think maybe a white oprington was used initially? Since they are recessive white and have white skin

I have lavenders from Paul Smith and my husband got some amazing pictures. I'm not sure about perfect conformation but they fit colors (leg, eye, comb etc) well and I would be willing to share them. See my profile picture.

Why is it called cuckoo? It's that the barring? Sorry I'm very new and very very slowly learning.

Pure lavenders have been establised for a while. And cuckoo is similar to barring yes. If you look at the pictures you can see the barring/cuckoo

A lady in Arizona, got a few whites from her black and blue pen. Shes going to start a white flock.

I'm giving her my only white chick I was able to hatch from my white breeding pair(now deceased). I'm thinking its a cockerel. Hopefully she has enough to start a flock and spread them in Arizona

News and Information / Lavender Cuckoo in Gallery
« on: July 11, 2015, 03:15:19 PM »
I was looking at the AOV gallery and I noticed the Lavender cuckoo pictures. I noticed the wrong leg color on all of them and even a single comb on one of them. Is this what we want to promote on here as a good representation of a project color? I think a project color should have strong AM traits. Ameraucana and Easter egger differences are hard enough for some people to understand. I just think there are other projects out there that can be used. I only know of one person working on this project.

DE earth or Ash is useless in my opinion. It wont really work in the short run. I spray the pens with a spray pump of permethrin diluted with water. It kills on contact. I also mix in the poultry dust with peremethrin in their dust bathing spots, nest boxes and all over the coop. For serious bug infestation on a bird. I dip them in water with permethrin. It gets everywhere and kills every critter on them instantly

3.25 oz of permethrin concentrate for every 5 gallons of water.

Breeding / Re: Feather sexing
« on: May 05, 2015, 02:51:03 AM »

Feather sexing chicks can be accomplished by crossing males that are homozygous for rapid feather growth or carry two rapid feather growth alleles ( k+/k+) with females that are hemizygous or carry only one slow feather growth allele ( K/_W).

Hi Cesar :)

I think you might have meant "heterozygous" here, rather than "hemizygous". Heterozygous means that both copies of the chromosome are present (one for the each parent), but the alleles are different (eg, K or W). Hemizygousity means that only one copy of the chromosome is present and the other is missing, which would not be a normal occurrence.  Homozygous is, as you stated, where both copies of the chromosome are present and the alleles match.

Hope this helps.

Susan I believe since its a sexlink trait, which means K or k+ is only found in the Z chromosome . This means females wouldnt have both copies of the gene, just one copy of the K or k+ gene. So I believe "hemizygous" is the proper term to use

Can the Ameraucana chicks be feather sexed and if so when is the best time to do it?

Feather sexing chicks can be accomplished by crossing males that are homozygous for rapid feather growth or carry two rapid feather growth alleles ( k+/k+) with females that are hemizygous or carry only one slow feather growth allele ( K/_W).

The female parent contributes a dominant gene for slow feather growth (K) to all the male offspring while the female offspring will inherit only one rapid feather growth allele ( k+)  from the father. This cross produces males that have slow feather growth (K/k+) and females that have rapid feather growth (k+/_W).

So the sire line must be bred to keep the fast growing feather genes and the dam must be bred to have the slow growing feather gene. This can only be accomplish by keeping two seperate lines to then combine them to feather sex. After the first generation it will not work.

I've talked to some other people at shows about Skittles coloring a couple said that she may be a splash with blue feathers and w/ white and black splashing.?

I'm pretty sure you have a blue chick. A splash chick would look white and blue. And black cannot be splash  :)

Cesar,   I have too many bantam colors to do it right, so will probably drop some this next season.  I have very small numbers of whites and lavs.  The whites are better by far.  They can be crossed to improve the lavs as they are both based on E.   The first cross will be splits showing black, probably with leakage etc.  But as Jean has mentioned, recessive whites can hide genes that might come back to haunt you.  Jerry DeSmit shared a trio of wheatens with us at the national and I would really like to get a number hatched of all these colors.  I tried to get some buffs from several breeders last year and it never really came together.  The buffs are one of my favorites too.

I have a larger number of silvers from three lines.  They each have challenges.  But I still enjoy them none the less.   They are very active and productive.  There are even a few birchens that have come from one of the lines.

Don, I guess you would have to use some whites that you know where bred from E. Have you hatched out any whites this season so far? If so how many are you planning on hatching?
