News and Information / Secretary/Treasurer Position
« on: November 16, 2019, 03:02:54 PM »
We are again in need of a Secretary/Treasurer.

Please contact your Director or me if you are interested.

At this time you cannot be a member of both Clubs to hold the position.

Just an FYI, this is a huge responsibility.  It takes several hours per week if not daily to maintain some sort of order with all the job requirements.   :)

Exhibiting & Promoting / 2016 National, Caldwell, ID
« on: April 20, 2016, 12:06:37 PM »
It's already time to start thinking about putting our National together as far as awards, etc.

The host Club is offering us a nice plaque for Champion Ameraucana.  I believe Paul will be making four plaques for the BB and RB for LF and bantams.

We will also have egg awards.

If you would like to donate a special award now is the time to do it. :)

I will be looking into a couple of the items I posted about previously, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Looking for Chick/Hatching Egg Donations
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:32:34 PM »
A 4-H group in the Tri -Cities area of Washington is looking for ameraucanas to be either donated or at low cost for their kids.  I don't have my breeding pens set up yet, so will not be able to get them birds.  Does anyone out there have anything they could donate?

They e-mailed me looking for LF and bantam lav/self blue birds.  These kids put on a small APA show in the spring and sell birds to their kids and the public for their 4-H group.

I will probably be able to supply them with bantam wtn and blue wheatens only.

Thanks,

Breeding / Information on the Chocolate Variety - Q&A
« on: August 29, 2015, 04:44:25 PM »
I have been breeding project chocolate birds since the spring of 2011.  I started with my bantam project first and used a bantam black ameraucana cockerel over bantam chocolate orpingtons.

I made sure the orpingtons I used were true bantams and I tried to find some that laid a very light pinkish colored egg.  These choices helped my bantam project move along quite fast.

Using the ameraucana as the male in the cross helped to promote the blue egg gene in the offspring.  And then I used a split cockerel to mate to pure ameraucana for the second generation.  Now several generations later, I am working on reducing the size just a bit and wing carriage.  I feel the feather quality is good as well as type and egg color.

With the large fowl project I was not able to do the cross the same way.  I had to use a small large fowl chocolate orpington cockerel over my black ameraucana hens.  My last generation of birds are very fluffy, have poor egg color, poor laying ability and not so great type.

It hasn't moved forward the way the bantams did and it has been a little disappointing, but I have to just keep moving forward.

The chocolate gene was discovered by an orpington breeder named Clive Carefoot in England.  It was a mutation he found in his black orpingtons.  It is a sex linked recessive gene.  This means that it is recessive in males and if a female has the gene, she will display the color.  So, you can only have split to chocolate males in the chocolate varieties.  The females are or are not chocolate, they don't carry the gene.

This gene is not the same chocolate that some people say their polish display.  Polish are dun/khaki.  The variety breeds true.  The gene modifies the black in the beaks, toe nails and legs to be chocolate in color.

I was not able to send out any LF project chicks or eggs this year due to the poor laying ability.  It is something I will continue to work on.  I have been able to send out many bantam chocolate hatching egg orders and am waiting for the girls to start back up so I can get more people working on them.

If anyone has any questions about the variety or the project or if you are also working with them feel free to post. :)

News and Information / Boy It's Hot Out There
« on: June 27, 2015, 02:30:26 PM »
Remember to make sure your birds have lots of cool water to drink and if possible give them shade.

We have had unseasonably warm weather for this time of the year.  It is supposed to be 105 tomorrow.

If possible get a mister for your birds or put water in a short pool for them to wade in.  Old plastic pop bottles with frozen water in them also can provide a way for your birds to cool off.  Just freeze and set them in their pen.

Take care of yourselves too!  Be sure you are also drinking lots of water!  And do your chores early in the morning or late in the evening.

Exhibiting & Promoting / AI and Your State/Our Meets
« on: May 16, 2015, 04:22:24 PM »
Several States have completely shut down all poultry movement in their States.  I believe PA and MN are two.  Also some states are restricting movement to only in-state movement of birds.

This could affect our meets.  There are different rules being applied across the board.  If there is anyone out there that has placed a meet or plan to attend an upcoming meet, could you please contact your State's Dept. of Agriculture to see what, if any rules have been put in place?

WA does not have any Statewide restrictions at this time.  Quarantined areas have shown no further incidence of disease to my knowledge.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Project Colors and the APA
« on: August 25, 2014, 01:37:29 PM »
If you have been or plan to work on a project color of ameraucana, I strongly suggest you become a member of the APA.

It has been said that the APA is going to change their rules for accepting new varieties.  They have supposedly already put a moratorium on any new variety until they have hashed this out and changed their By-Laws.

The new rule they want to pass is that the five breeders who have bred the new variety for five years must also be a member of the APA.  They plan no grandfather clause to this proposal.

If you have a problem with this proposal and are currently a member of the APA, I suggest you contact your District Representative and discuss a "grandfather" solution.  Since most people working on project varieties have been following the written guidelines provided by the APA for the past several years, to change it after many have just finished their five year mark is not fair.

I would also encourage all members of our Board of Directors to become members of the APA.  The APA sanctions all our shows and is the "Parent Organization" of poultry exhibitors and clubs.
