Breeding / Chocolate Wheaten F2
« on: May 21, 2023, 11:50:19 PM »
After setting many many eggs I believe I have 2 or 3 chocolate wheaten chicks. They're just starting to feather in, but it appears that they have chocolate in their wings. I also noticed the down coloring on the ones that have chocolate appears to have a rusty reddish tint to it, which I was not expecting. ^_^ I don't know if it's realted or not, but I'll find out as I hatch more, I'm sure. ^_^

Breeding / Breeder selection decisions

Writing this to get some expert opinions and to talk things through with myself lol.

I've finally gone through and looked over my pool of hens and cocks, overall I'm really happy with what I have but a little bummed too. I started with 2 breeding pens, pen one was a chocolate cock over 4 w/bw/spw hens, and pen 2 was a BW cock over 3 chocolate hens. I knew I'd know which female offspring came from which male based on their coloring, but I ended up not marking the chicks to track which males came from which pen, which was an error on my part.

My conundrum is that all my females that came from the BW male over choc hens aren't that awesome. The things they have going for them are really nice, beautiful egg color, one has a great tail, and one has lovely full muffs, but they have more stacked against than for, including white shimmer on their earlobes, brown eyes, single muffs and I'm pretty sure one has a single/pea comb.

I'm worried about keeping my gene pool healthy though, and debating on using these hens since I know that they had a different sire than my chocolate and mauve hens and therefor potentially different than the male that I use, since I didn't mark the males.

I could keep only the best of the best, which would give me 1 male and 4 hens, which all likely share the same dad, and then outcross to more BWs hens once I get a chocolate wheaten male.

I'm 100% getting a toe punch now though, any recommendations?

Breeding / pseudo barring on mauve chickens
« on: March 21, 2023, 10:10:47 PM »
Curious as to the cause behind this sort of "barring" that is on my blue and mauve chickens. Does it have something to do with the dilution gene? Feed related? It's most visible in their tail and wing feathers.

Also, does anyone know the cause behind the oddly placed axial? feather when the wing is folded? Is that just a thing that happens or is it something structural? it often seems to be only one wing that has the feather sticking out.

Breeding / Chocolate Wheaten F1

Finally have my first cross towards Chocolate Wheatens.

I'm loving the mauve chicks that hatched and that got me to thinking..... I know for regular blues that they need to have the lacing effect, but I think blue wheatens are not supposed to be laced? Or are they? If so should mauve wheatens (or regular mauve) be laced?

I know some people set up different pens depending on if they're breeding for blue vs breeding for black.

Basically I'm wanting to work on chocolate and mauve wheaten and possibly chocolate and mauve and want to know if the mauve/mauve wheaten should be laced.

Breeding / Chocolate Wheaten

I'm so excited to begin my project. I'll be looking for a nice Blue Wheaten or Splash Wheaten Cockerel sometime soon, around the show in march or a little sooner if it's near Oak Harbor Seattle area. I have a Blue Wheaten girl and a Wheaten girl from Lindsay (I LOVE them definitely want more) and some F1/F2 Chocolate girls from Jean that I want to put under the boy I hope to get. I lost my Splash Wheaten Cockerel that I had planned to use when code enforcement was called on me while I was under quarantine for LT. So I will be seeking only vaccinated birds in the future or day old chicks which I will vaccinate myself.

Here are a few pics of my girls. I know I need to get a boy with good eye color, and size/type. I'm pretty stoked for this. ^_^
