How are your building projects coming along Courtney?  What did your husband contractor and you decide to build?

Hang on everyone.  Washington just announced that they found a new case of AI in a turkey flock in Indiana.  Pray that this is found to be an isolated incident and that other flocks are clear.  Winter is here finally so lets hope for a clear season and no recurrences.

Wow!  Great idea Susan.  I think this will make an incredible amount of history available to everyone.   I've only read a few articles but really enjoy hearing what was happening in 85 so far.      Thanks!

Susan, I am sure you will keep us updated on what needs to be done next and what is lacking during the process.  But what is the process for acceptance of Bantam Lavs, both from the APA and ABA?

Also, for those who hope to help work on other varieties, Splash and Splash Wheaten have been discussed, what should we be doing in these years before the the official application is started?  I understand that larger numbers of the varieties need to be exhibited at some shows each year?

Another thought, do we ask the Judges to choose Best AOC/AOV at ABC meets?  In my mind this might help folks to bring out the new colors more often.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: Temp and humidity control

Dan,  Sounds like you have a good handle on hatching with those kinds of percentages.  I've heard great things about the Brinsea incubators too.  I think the biggest element for incubating humidity is the overall evaporation.  Some like to start with a drier humidity and them ramp up really high toward the end of the cycle.  But with percentages like these, you should have no problem with the AMs.  Good luck on the hatch.

North Carolina AG lifted their ban on shows today.  So our spring shows should be on track.   I am not sure if we go back to testing as usual, hopefully so.  But I will keep you posted of more info as it becomes available.

Congratulations to all of the winners!  It sounds like it was a great show and it's great to see the whites represented so strongly.  This color really has the chance to compete well and get more folks involved with the breed.  (I hope Paul has a good number of white breeding pens next year too.) And it is especially good to see the AMs going beyond BB in a show with this many entries.  I am glad to see many judges are beginning to notice the quality in the breed.  And thanks to a few outlaws, its nice to see bantam Ameraucanas represented outside of their stronghold.  Good Job and good luck next at Fort Worth.

Jean, you can give them my email and we can talk.  I wonder if it is not the same strain.  But I will be glad to  talk to them about it.  I am hoping that a friend here in state can hatch some pure buffs this spring.  But we also have a few breeders who plan to cross back to Wheaten and White like Jerry suggested before.  I've heard that another breeder has had viability problems and now has wheatens again.  Maybe for this purpose.

Congratulations to all the winners!  Glad there was a good showing in Both LF and Bantams.  Especially good entries for this time of year.  Sounds like it was a great show.  Keeping the breed in the forefront in this part of the country again.   Thank you Paul and company for the great report too.

Very Interesting.   Thanks Susan, but I don't see any birchen listed on the AOV list?

Quite a difference between some of the varieties even in the accepted colors.

There may be a trio of Large Fowl silvers available for someone that wants to work with the variety.  Hopefully they would be able to raise a good group of chicks each season and help get these out to others in the region was well as show and promote the variety.  Anyone interested feel free to drop me an email for details.
Thanks!      drccash@yahoo.com

Spencer, Glad you have a good experience for your first show.  Your birds may have been the only bantams at the show but I hope that they were noticed by a good number of people.  It only takes one exhibitor to open the door and soon others will enjoy those colors and hopefully more as well.  Soon you'll have folks asking for birds and eggs.  Hopefully You will have a good group of breeders in your area to work together on the breed.

Ernie,  I am sure its the same way with even the Large Fowl in some areas.  I know that all of you represented the breed well.  Paul mentioned before that they were the only ones showing birds in his area at one time.  And now think about all of the breeders that he has helped in his area alone.  There are more breeders in TX now than most of the states.  It has more to do with people helping others get interested and started than you might think.    I hope you all had a great weekend and are already planning your next shows for the spring.

The two meets were hosted at a Double show by Sandlappers Poultry Club yesterday, Saturday Dec 5th in Blacksville SC.  We had some great exhibitors from three states showing more than twice the number of LF than bantams.  But the bantams were well represented in 6 colors.  Its great to see bantams shown in our area for new folks to see.
LF were exhibited in 7 colors as well.  It was good to see some of the more rare colors shown and it would be great to see more shows with this kind of color diversity representing the breed.

Several of the winners in LF went on to achieve higher wins in both shows.  And its always good to see the breed represented on Champion row.  Also, it's great to see some of the more rare colors not only shown, but reaching prestige wins in the breed and then winning further levels as well.

We enjoyed some good time with folks attending the show.  Its always good to get together and talk AMs and share stories of what was learned from last years pairings.  It was great to study some of the colors in the standard with several of the members.  We can all learn together when questions are raised a shows, even if you do have to sometimes go into the Old English cages to see examples of the standard colors moved closer to perfection.  And there were some new folks to come out to see and enjoy the breed at this show.  I think a few people left with new stock and I hope that they will be back to shows soon with exhibits of of their own.

There was a good bit of ribbing going on after the first judging.  Needless to say, some of us were happy to be able to contribute points to Susan and Maggie in their wins for this show.  I hope to see greater and more diverse varieties at the shows in the spring.  We hope the bans will be fully lifted and folks can get out and bring their birds to the shows.  Meets are set for March and April already.

Congratulations to all of the winners!  I am sure there were some birds treated to very special accommodations and feeds this morning after their trip home.  And a special thanks to the Sandlappers Club members for all their hard work and hospitality to bring things together.  They were great hosts and there are other meets being discussed for this location as we speak.
