I was looking up the info to share with someone and saw it was cancelled. Ugh...
Wasn't this the one that most folks were able to meet at? I was really looking forward to meeting new people...

Don-
I'd love to come towards the end of the show and meet up with you (and anyone else!). We've got a church activity that morning. If I showed up around noon, would that be too late? I'm not quite familiar with individual show timing yet... I think I showed up at noon to Greensboro last year?

They seem to be happy in them. I had hoped to give them turns free-ranging, but with FIVE different Hawks living on our property, I'm thinking they'll be just fine in the coop!
I did end up getting metal roofing over the run (after these pics were taken). Keeps it a lot drier, and I'm hoping will keep them cooler in the summer too.
I was using straw in the run, but will be switching to pine shavings. Apparently one of my pullets thought straw was edible and ended up with a terminal case of impacted crop. :(
Oh, also, here are my isolation/juvenile/broody pens. There's three of them in a 3'x8' floor space, and two feet tall.

Here is my "Quad Coop". It holds a "quad" of "quads". ;)
Took FOREVER to build, but that's because I built most of it by myself. With a few hours of help from my 9 year old, a few hours of help from sis in law, and a few days of help from my dad. The coop itself is 5'x8', divided into four 2'x5' sections. The run is 12'x12', divided into four 3'x12' sections. Each coop has two next boxes and two roosting bars, as well as its own window. Each coop also has its own access door, so that I can clean it out.

Another trick that I've found, if you have your picture on a mobile device, is to email it to yourself. My phone then asks me what size I want to send it and I click small. Then when I get the email, I simply re-save it to my photo gallery to upload here.

Breeding / Re: Breeder selling to hatchery?
« on: February 13, 2016, 07:44:04 PM »
Here's how I see it:
Anyone wanting to get into shows is going to know (or realize very quickly) that they have to buy from a breeder, not a hatchery. To go along will your dog example: no one buying from a puppy mill buys in hopes of showing their dog some day. It's two different worlds. And considering the fact that there are "hatchery quality" and "breeder quality" of pretty much every variety I can think of, I don't see how Ameraucanas would avoid that fate. If not now, it would be next year, or the year after. Or maybe they would've gotten their start from someone NOT as prominent, and then it'd really go down fast.
I guess the bottom line is, I feel it's an inevitable event. We just need to continue encouraging people to buy from breeders...

I haven't been on the forum in a while, so I'm just seeing this post.
When this "plan" first came out, all media implied it was mandatory. However, recently, I've read several news articles that say it is actually optional. And, really, it's not like they have the legal ability to enforce this anyway. It would have to be legislation, I would think.
I was planning on getting NPIP certified in a few months (when all my chicks are grown), so I guess I'll be "registered" then, but I am definitely not an advocate of this program!

I've heard that complaint from a few people actually- that Ameraucana eggs aren't as uniformly blue across the breed as CCLs or Isbars... Seems to be an uphill battle!

You've got a nice picture of blue eggs on your site. Could you tell me what color your eggs are on the ABC color chart? I may be interested in hatching eggs.

I know Don can't go to Cape Fear, but is anyone else going??
I won't be showing any birds, but I'd love to meet up with other Ameraucana breeders if possible!

That's an interesting thought Don...
I bought 17 chick boxes off a silkie breeder who was moving. I'd be happy to get some to you when I pick up my trio from you.
Knowing my post office they'd probably tell me it was illegal or something crazy like that. Maybe you can be the guinea pig... ;)

I know it's too late for Maggie's hatch, but I thought this might help someone else:
I found these coated wire baskets at Dollar tree this month. Two fit perfectly in my hovabator with room around them for an additional variety. They are 8"x9.5" and are 4.5" high, which means the chicks can't jump out!
