I have a Silver LF hen that has a swollen butt. It is so big that she drags it around when she walks or in her case waddles. Is this an egg bound hen and if so what can i do to help her? My Silvers are small hens but they all lay huge eggs.
-
Well, if she is egg bound, I have read that soaking them in warm water baths sometimes helps. Not sure how often you have to do it though.
I also don't know how you can know for sure if she is eggbound or maybe just laying internally. I have a hen that I believe lays internally. There was a point where she was dragging the ground but she was also laying some flat sided eggs. So, I took her out of the coop and out of the extra lighting and made sure she had the extra oyster shell she wanted. She would eat a pile of oystershell daily and it seemed to help. I read that their body will just absorb the extra yolks they lay. Idk. I thought maybe the extra lighting was making her produce more eggs than she had calcium for. She appears to be fine now.

Mike,
It's ironic that we didn't know what IDK stands for. I looked it up...
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/IDK
IDK
1.(Internet slang, text messaging) I don't know.
Now I can add it to my list of other three letter initialisms (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/initialism), like FYI, DIY, CIA, KGB and IGA ;D

I guess when a person is retired, has the time, and knows how to spell they don't feel the need for it.
I was pretty sure IDK wasn't "It's Dirty Kumquats." But then I consider BBS to be just plain BS too, so it's probably just me. Eccentric, that is.

Look up" waterbelly in chickens ", if she feels like a balloon filled with water, you may need to drain it.
Lots of information about waterbelly & egg bound.
my Araucana with it died and I opened her up, she was filled with what looked like scrambled eggs. If I ever see it again I will cull. JMO.

I must have jinxed myself, came home to a prolapsed hen.

There is no cure that is permanent that I have found.

I don't think she will recover, however, she is DBF and he needs to decide her fate.
She is a beautifull rumpless, double tufted, white and lays a big blue egg.
hate to loose her

DBF
Divorced Black Female
That doesn't make sense to me, so please spell it out for those of us that have no clue what all the initials stand for.
-
Dead Butt Fowl?
-
I think it stands for dumb boy friend or maybe dear boy friend. This ain't twitter folks, there is plenty of room to spell things out.

First I figured DB stood for dark brown, as in Leghorn, but gave up on that and checked Wikipedia and this is what I had to choose from...
DBF may refer to:
dBASE filename extension
Detection By Fire
Divorced Black Female in personal ads
dBf — Decibel as referring to 1 femtowatt
dBF — Decibel as in "dB from Full"
Drude-Born-Federov form of constitutive equations
Distributed Bellman-Ford a Distance-vector routing protocol
Danmarks Badminton Forbund (Denmark's Badminton Union)
Diesel Boats Forever (Diesel Boats Forever)
Design/Build/Fly aircraft design competition
Oracle tablespace filename extension
Distributed feedback laser - a type of a laser
Gordon may be the winner with his guess ;D
-
Ok, I'll play. DBF. Double breasted female? But aren't they all? ;D
-
Thanks everyone for your help! I guess nature will take over from here. There was some pretty good stuff or (PGS) posted on here to.
-
Opps!!! DBF = Dear boyfriend ;D
I laughed until I had tears
