Title: Black chick down color as it relates to being gold based or silver based
Post by: Lindsay Helton on April 27, 2020, 12:30:53 PM
A member recently posted photos of these chicks and asked if it is possible to distinguish whether or not a black Ameraucana chick is gold based, silver based or split for both based on chick down color.

Black Ameraucana chicks should be based on E. Scientific research has shown the distribution of black pigment on chicks based on E masks the expression of S (silver) and s+ (gold).

The only way to determine whether a black Ameraucana is silver based, gold based or split for both is via test matings or genetic testing. Refer to the scientific study below for more information.

*A silver or gold base can be identified via chick down depending on a combination of factors related to a chick’s color, the e-locus allele it is based on, the presence of certain genes such as Co and the presence of pheomelanin intensifiers. However, as reflected above, the distribution of black pigment on our black Ameraucana chicks masks the expression of S (silver) and s+ (gold).
