Breeding / Re: Breeding wheaten to self blue for isabel
« on: March 26, 2022, 05:22:42 AM »
I'm excited that I have about 30 blackish chicks so far. I am going to grow out everything that is black and probably keep 4 roosters and all the hens. I have a couple that are looking like a dark grey with the brown marking you see on immature Wheaten chicks. I have a huge 12 by 20 foot coop/run that they will go into once they are big enough to go outside. Is anyone on their 2nd generation of their Isabel project?

Sorry just one more clarity question... I do not want to breed the black chicks to a wheaten or self blue? Only breed these blacks to blacks?

Wow! Thank you for the link. Omg, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on genetics and color and that looked like a tangled web of generics that I am not prepared for. I initially was planning on keeping and raising any females that I hatch this year. But now I feel like I really have no clue what my goal this year should be.

Ok so the black chicks I will breed back to the self blue to see more isabel? The chicks that hatched that look like a red/brown (dark cream with a black chipmunk pattern) are not worth keeping? Those will not breed back with self blue for the isabel?

Hi everyone! I need some help from those of you that are producing your own Isabel color. I have a self blue rooster over wheaten ladies. I know all are true and pure because I bred and hatched from self blues together and wheaten to each other. There should not be any hidden genetics. I hatched my first round of self blue over wheaten and have gotten chicks that almost look black and others that look wheaten. I expected this first generation to be all wheaten looking, wheaten split to self blue. Am I missing something?

Thank you, I will! I have a couple splashes and love them! I'm excited for that color to be approved.

I will for sure! I have hatched a lot of eggs and so far I only have one Wheaton 10 that looks good. So I have no doubt that this will be a very long project but well worth it. I'm really looking forward to this color being accepted down the road no matter how many years that may be.

Oh no! I'm sorry. That would just be crushing. Are you working on any projects now?

I do understand that and that has not been the problem with her. There are genetic health issues and other stuff. No which are something to mention here.

I am unfortunately aware of her. I was extremely disappointed and have talked to others that had negative experiences with her birds that have purchased from her. I am working on an Isabel breeding project and was hoping to get a few chicks as a starting point for reference. If you know of anyone else I would love to know who else there is.

I am familiar with the breeding and the color as far as just like the BBS. I will definitely post some pictures of them as they grow out to get your opinion on them. I want to get a solid 3, maybe 4 hens to out my self blue with next year. I would like them to be as close as possible to SOP. I'm hatching out more in a few weeks and think I'm going to grow them out more before officially deciding who to keep. It is a great learning experience!

Thank you for your insight. That was a spelling mistake I didn't pay attention to. It is good to hear from people who have different experiences. I have been told the opposite from other breeders. I am working on developing a quality wheaten hen. I appreciate any experience people have. I would agree there is not just one way to accomplish many goals.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I can understand what you're saying and that does make sense. I'll try and get a picture of her and post it because I don't have any other blue wheatons that have these light black or dark gray markings on their chest.
