I enjoyed spending time with my Ameraucana mentor and friend Jean Ribbeck at our 2020 Ameraucana Breeders Club national meet this past weekend. I am so thankful for all the people that volunteer their time to educate others on the breed we love.

Thank you for your mentorship on the breed the past several years Jean. It has been a blessing to me. BV, RB-Wheaten pullet, RV-Wheaten pullet, BV-Self blue hen, RV-Self blue pullet, BV-Blue wheaten pullet, RV-Blue wheaten pullet, BV-Blue cockerel (bred by Susan Mouw).

I'm thankful for the help with the birds but more thankful for our friendship.

P.S. Thanks for giving me feedback on educational posts, helping solve problems that surface, being my accountability partner regarding timely completion of tasks and for always sending loads of positive energy my way. You have made a time-consuming position feel very manageable. You're the best.

Breeding / Blue breeding program
« on: October 20, 2020, 07:22:14 PM »
I decided to get back into blues this year. I picked out my blue cockerel keeper and I wanted to share a photo. He came in a box of chicks from Susan this past spring. I am holding onto two really nice blue pullets from the group of chicks as well! Eye color appears a little dark in the first photo but it looks nice in person for his age. Ironically, one of my favorite parts of him is his tight pea comb, but you can't see it very well in that first photo so I included a second photo. I am looking forward to watching him finish out.

I also received a nice package in the mail recently! Thanks for gifting me your flock of large fowl wheaten and blue wheatens in 2017 Susan and for gifting me your best blue breeding pair in 2020. I have enjoyed showing with you across the southeast for the last several years. I’m thankful to call you one of my mentors on the breed and blessed to call you a friend. Thanks for answering so many questions while I was learning the computer processes for the club this year. You have been a big help to me. I look forward to working with the blue variety in the years to come!

Breeding / Stubs
« on: October 10, 2020, 10:23:26 PM »
Another disqualification we need to watch for on our Ameraucanas when breeding them towards the standard is stubs.

Stubs are “a short section of the stem of a feather, sometimes with a few short barbs attached. It is a disqualification when found on shanks, or on or between the toes of clean legged breeds.”

To purchase a copy of the 44th edition of the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection book, which goes into full detail on the breed standard as well as defects and disqualifications, visit the following link:

http://amerpoultryassn.com/sample-page/apa-store/

You can also find a lot of great information on the Ameraucana breed by browsing through posts on the ABC forum.

Thank you to the APA for giving me permission to use excerpts of the standard when creating these educational posts.

Breeding / Yellow skin- A disqualification for Ameraucanas
« on: September 30, 2020, 01:05:00 PM »
I often see posts from folks asking if the birds they have purchased are Ameraucanas or EE’s.

One disqualification (a deformity or defect serious enough to debar a fowl) that you can watch for to quickly identify an EE/mixed bird is yellow skin. Ameraucanas should have white skin, not yellow skin.

The gene that is responsible for white skin is dominant and wild type. The yellow skin gene is recessive to white skin. Both white skin and yellow skin can affect the epidermal layer of skin.

To double check the skin color of your birds, take a close look at their foot pads. The foot pads on an Ameraucana should be white. You can also take a look at the beak and shanks. Yellow, willow or green tints in these areas are indicative of yellow skin which is a disqualification.
