Hmmm...I thought it was the growth hormones that were being used in the grow out houses.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Need splash and a blue wheaten rooster

Look under the topic \"free roosters\".

There is a member who has a splash rooster she is trying to find a home for.  She may still have it.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Question about laying
« on: December 05, 2007, 08:38:19 PM »
Hi,
I have a couple of LF black ameraucana hens that are now 28 wks old and have not produced an egg yet.  Seems quite a long time considering my 26 wk old Easter Egger layed her first egg about three weeks ago.  They have their choice of scratch, layer pellets and grower crumbles and free range.  I have kept them penned for half the day the last two days just in case they may be laying outside the nests, but still no eggs.  Shouldn\'t they be laying by now or is this breed a much later starter?

Thanks,
sharon

Ameraucana Marketplace / Americanas at county fair
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:10:27 AM »
Rose, I too went to that county fair and came away very disappointed.  I was curious to see if any true Ameraucana\'s would be entered and what type of entries won ribbons.  Only saw Easter Eggers which were, like you said, listed as Americanas.  I did not see any ribbons for any breeds other than some bald, dirty commercial layers that looked like they had just been plucked out of the commerical chicken house and some white leghorns (in a little better shape).  Hmmm...wonder if Tyson and George\'s have anything to do with these judging decisions?  I had went on Tuesday, maybe the judging was not finished yet?  I was shocked regardless of the reasons.

I was thinking of raising Ameraucana\'s for 4-H\'ers myself, but if that is what they award ribbons to at the local fair, why would a kid bother?  Looks like you don\'t have to do anything but pull them out of the chicken house a day before the fair!

I did see one nice silver/gray Easter Egger hen that I noticed was entered for Forrest Grahm.  I hope it got something.  The boy died in a tragic accident a few months ago and it looks like the family entered his bird for him.  Made me want to cry seeing that.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Eye color and blacks
« on: August 18, 2007, 07:02:23 PM »

Sorry I can\'t help you HB with that question since I\'m new to this, but I have a question also regarding eye color and this seems the appropriate thread.  At what age do you check for eye color?  I have a few black ameraucanas, some are 12 weeks and some are 4 weeks, but all have grey eye color.  My easter eggers have bay color, but not these.   At least not yet.  Is eye color something that changes with age?

I just had to make my first post to say that is one beautiful rooster Mark.  What is he?

By the way, very enjoyable and informative board you have here John.  I especially enjoy the pictures that members post.  Before too long I hope to be hatching my first real Ameraucana eggs.

Ameraucana Marketplace / Broody?

Hi, new to forum and new to hatching chicks also.  Just thought I would let you know JP that I have a Little Giant also with the air circulator and egg turner.  I have hatched eggs twice with it.  My first time I set a dozen eggs and did everything wrong that you could possibly do wrong and still got 6 to hatch.  The second time I set 26 eggs with the egg turner and got 25 hatched.  I live in NW AR and kept all the trays filled with water, which I checked once daily, then added a wet sponge for the last three days and tried to keep it wet without raising the lid.  I like the egg turner because I only have to lift the lid very briefly once daily to add water and that is it.  Oh, and don\'t forget to open one air hole!
