Ok, I've made some changes to the bantam gallery only. It takes a lot of time to get all those pics (6 for each variety) formatted properly and I didn't want to go through all that for large fowl, until I get a consensus from you if you like this new format.
Instead of clicking on a thumbnail and displaying the large pic in a new page or tab, I've used a hover format. When you hover over the thumbnail pic, the larger pic is displayed without leaving the current page.
There are pros and cons to this type of format, but tell me what you think. If the general consensus is favorable, I'll move forward with the large fowl gallery.
-
It does the trick for me, but after more time spent with it...it can be difficult to hover over the pic you want as others are popping up. I believe an enlargeable photo of a clickable thumbnail would be easier for some of us to work with.
-
I agree with John as the hover style is ok, but the thumbnail enhancement is easier for me to use. My hardest part was getting to the center pictures without enhancing the end row pictures. After more use I did gradually get better at it.
-
Ok, I played with it a bit. The problem I found was getting to the middle pic. As I'd move toward it from either side, the outside pic would enlarge and cover the middle one.
God Bless,

Yes, that is what I was afraid of when I first put it in and played with it myself - and why I didn't keep going with the large fowl. It's one of those things that is kinda cool to a geek, like me, but really not so functional in the real world. :)
Looking at alternatives today. :)

Ok...update on the gallery (bantam only, for now)
I spent the weekend researching various tools and trying out some new scripts and ended up with what is up now:
http://www.ameraucana.org/gallery_bntm.html (http://www.ameraucana.org/gallery_bntm.html)
Try it out. The larger image is a little lower than I would have preferred, but it needed to stay centered, so you don't have to scroll up and down the page when trying to view those at the bottom.
I'll be working on large fowl pics today and tonight, so if you have any to send - this would be a good time.

They've all worked fine for me Susan. The previous approach was a little tricky getting to the middle pictures like several have mentioned, but were easy to access without clicking. The current bantam gallery is great too. One thing, the enlarged picture comes up compressed in width compared to height. Might be a problem with my computer settings?
(much better Susan, thanks!)
BTW, are you doing the newsletter too, if so is the deadline for the next one March 1 or prior to this date? Also how long do the spring show dates need to be announced before the actual show date?
Thanks for all the hard work!
-
Hi Don
My bad. I had the width and height variables transposed. It is fixed now - just be sure to refresh your browser (F5 works nicely), so you will load the new page.
If no one else volunteers to do the newsletter, then, yes, I will be doing that, too. If anyone would like to volunteer to help out - that would be great! I will keep the dates as they have been in the past.
As to the meet announcements - I don't see anything in the meet policy that sets a time frame for when announcements must be made. Maybe someone else can step in here and answer?
-
Meets will only be placed, by a District Director, if a member requests a meet for a specific show in time for the distribution of information via the ABC quarterly Bulletin prior to the entry deadline for that show. For planning purposes, members need to know well in advance when and where meets are placed. As a general rule of thumb, meets should only be placed where it is reasonably expected that three or more exhibitors will show Ameraucana.
-
I will keep the dates as they have been in the past.
Spring Bulletin due around March 1st, with a submission deadline of February 15th.
Summer Bulletin due around June 1st, with a submission deadline of May 15th.
Fall Bulletin due around September 1st, with a submission deadline of August 15th.
Winter Bulletin due around December 1st, with a submission deadline of November 15th.

Thank you, Jean!
Thank you, John!

The Large Fowl gallery is now updated with the latest and greatest format:
http://www.ameraucana.org/gallery.html (http://www.ameraucana.org/gallery.html)
I'm going to be working on other areas of the forum, but will still be looking for better/more/clearer pics for the bantam and Large Fowl galleries.
-
Thanks Susan works real good here.

Love the addition of juvenile photos! These will be especially helpful for silvers, brown Red's, and the wheaten varieties. I've seen people tricked into buying EEs because "that's just his juvenile plumage" and of course when it matured to look nothing like it was supposed to the seller was long gone. :(
-
With the day-old chick photos I tried to get two or three chicks in some photos, so the face and front of one can be viewed and the back of another. With some varieties it isn't as important as with others. Wheatens should include both the head spot and shanks, silvers should include the back stripes, face and breast, etc. To show the entire phenotype of most varieties of day-old chicks two or three chicks have to be posed in the photo shot.
With adult birds just a good profile, of one bird of each sex, that includes the breast is enough.

Not sure what is going on, but the thumbnails in the gallery do not work for me. I can't get them to enlarge.
Also, I've noticed that here on the forum the old link to get to the homepage no longer works. In fact, I can't find a link anywhere to get back to the homepage. Is there one?
-
When you click on a thumbnail, the larger pic shows in the spot about the rows down. Depending on your screen resolution, you may have to scroll down to see it.
Just above the menu, on the right side, where it says "welcome to...", there is a link to the website home page. It should show up in blue letters.

here on the forum the old link to get to the homepage
I used to have the logo on the top of each web page be a clickable link to the forum and the logos on the top of the forum pages were links to the website's homepage to quickly and easily navigate back and forth between the two. Now the logos on the forum link to the forum and on the website link to the website.
-
Logos on a website should link to the home page for that website - that's Website Navigation 101. :)
I did like how you had the logo on the forum linking to the website, but haven't had the time to spend to make that work with all the other customization. When I have some time to spend on that, I will. :)
The link on the left hand side of the website is "static" and is in the same place for every page on the website, so it should be easy to find.
Sometimes progress comes with some re-learning. :)

I see now. Well, the link does take some searching. I couldn't find it easily. You don't know how many times I clicked on those thumbnails to get my pic to expand. I'm just use to having something open up when I click. So if it happens to me, it could happen to others. I'm not tech savy, but I'm not unfamiliar with navigating web pages. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Sharon
If I place a pop up window that opens the larger image, we run in to the same challenge as with the "hover" effect in that other thumbnails are covered up and you can't access them when the pop-up is open. Also, many have pop-up windows blocked, so when they click on a thumbnail, nothing at all would happen. This seemed to be the best alternative to opening a new window each time you want to see an enlarged image.
It is lower than I would have liked, but that is only way I could do it and still be able to see anything when you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.
How should the instructions (in italics at the top of the gallery page) read so that it is clearer where the larger image actually is opened?

Oh, it's fine. If I would have scrolled down I would have seen it. It's just me not following all the directions and trying to do things the same old way. ;D

I like the new "Gallery". The pictures are extremely nice. I enjoyed being able to see the chicks alongside the adults. Thanks Susan for your hard work and a good job in putting it together.
