History of the ABC, cont'd
40th Anniversary

The work on the website continued through the end of 2015, with added features and functionality.  The new look and feel of the website was much easier to navigate, and all the new features invited folks in to take a look around, as well as being an added benefit to our members, especially with the change to the breeders directory.  We also added a High Points Award program that ran for 3 years, for 2015, 2016, and 2017 in June '15.

• April 7, 2015 – Added Upcoming Events and Meets on the Home page.
During the initial phase of the website remodeling, there wasn’t a lot of change to the upcoming meets listing, with the exception of the new website design itself. But, we wanted our members and visitors to find upcoming meets easier, so we added a scrolling listing on the home page for upcoming meets, too.

• One of the earliest projects, under the website improvement plan, was to redo our breeder’s directory.  The original breeder’s directory, with an example shown below, was hard to read and required a decoder ring to figure it all out.  The first online, searchable and sortable, interactive Breeders Directory was introduced in Feb, 2015.  Some folks still liked the downloadable .pdf format, and by early May ’15, we had added a revised .pdf format in two versions: alphabetical by name, and alphabetical by state, then by name.  Some examples of both are shown below.

• June 10, 2015 – New High Point Awards Program Announced
The ABC introduced a new awards program for annual High Points award.  The program ran for 3 years and the following members were recognized for their achievements.

All of these changes, added features, and progress were being noticed.  The ABC added 99 new members in 2015, a record only beaten once before in the history of the club; in 2006, there were 102 new members added to the ABC rolls.

Come join us for a celebration of the last 40 years at our 40th Anniversary ABC National Meet at the Dayton Fancy Feathers Show, Greenville, OH on October 6th-7th.

Better yet, join the ABC and get your name tossed in the hat for this year's New Member Drawing - your choice of either a 4 hole bantam show box or a 3 hole LF show box made by Vinson Workman.

History of the ABC, continued
First Quarter - 2015
Whenever people from diverse backgrounds, education, beliefs, and practices join together, the opportunity for conflict can arise. As the ABC grew, so did the diversity of its members: from all walks of life, all levels of experience with Ameraucanas, and poultry in general, and from all over the country. While disagreements within the ABC were usually resolved amicably, there came a time when there seemed to be no room for compromise or resolution. Following the 2014 election such a dispute arose, with one defeated candidate for office becoming dissatisfied with the ABC. Some folks took sides in the dispute; some remained neutral. About 20 of our members chose to follow the disgruntled candidate to his new Ameraucana club, established in March 2015. The Ameraucana Breeders Club wishes the new club all the best.

While the disagreement played out; sometimes in the public eye, the Board and the members of the ABC were very busy. The website was completely redone, offering more history, more archives, more choices in breeder's directories, more online services (new online membership forms, etc), more visibility for upcoming meets, and results of meets past, and the process for acceptance of the self-blue Ameraucana was started, a new ABC Handbook was released; the list goes on. Here are just a few examples of the progress from the first quarter of 2015:

• New Ameraucana Breeders Club Website:
Starting in early 2015, a complete make-over of the ABC website began. Functionality was increased, with an online membership (for new members and renewals), a searchable and sortable online interactive breeders directory, an archives page with all of the bulletins (that we had available), going back to the very first one, a new page with online meet reports showing results going back to when the ABC points system began in 2012, and eventually, a new, and more user-friendly Ameraucana gallery.

• One of the early priorities for the new website was to remodel the gallery, or scrapbook as it was called then, to make it easier to see the pictures of Ameraucanas, from chick to mature bird. This became a phased project, with the first phase of restructuring the page so that all the images could be seen at a glance. If a website visitor chose to examine a picture more closely, they could just click on that picture and it would bring up a larger image in the middle. This proved to be huge success, but was, by no means, the end of the project.

• The second phase of the Gallery project was to add pictures of the non-standard varieties, so they could also be easily seen and compared. A third page to the gallery, Large Fowl AOV, was added in May 2015 and included images of lavender, mottled, and splash Ameraucana. This phase of the project is ongoing and the next step will be to add AOV pics of the bantams.

• The third, and still ongoing, phase of the gallery is a continuous update of the images displayed. To that end, a monthly Gallery Competition started in June 2017, with a new variety featured each month. Everyone with Ameraucanas was invited to send in their pictures and a team of three well-known poultry judges, Rip Stalvey, Walt Leonard, and Tom Roebuck, reviewed and chose the best images for the website. That monthly Gallery competition continued all the currently accepted varieties had been updated, and the in process variety, self-blue. You can see all the new images by visiting our current gallery at ameraucanabreedersclub.org/gallery.html.

• New Online Membership Form
The online membership form was introduced in early March, 2015 and the first new member signed up on March 8, 2015. Since its introduction, over 300 new members have joined the ABC through the convenience of the online membership form. Existing members have used it, too, for renewals with over 200 ABC members renewing their membership online – simply and quickly. Of course, we still accept mailed-in membership forms, too!

Ameraucana fanciers all over the world were starting to notice the "new" face of the Ameraucana Breeders Club: in just the first quarter of 2015, 46 new members joined the ABC!

Come join us for a celebration of the last 40 years at our 40th Anniversary ABC National Meet at the Dayton Fancy Feathers Show, Greenville, OH on October 6th-7th.

40th Anniversary Celebration
History of the Ameraucana Breeders Club

With all eight current accepted varieties in both the APA and ABA Standards of Perfection, things began to settle down in the second half of the 80s.

In 1986, Rusty Hart won the logo contest with the logo we still use today (with the name change). (Ameraucana Breeders Club Bulletin 1986 vol 8 1.pdf) Later in that year, a vote was held and the Ameraucana Bantam Club became the Ameraucana Breeders Club. (Ameraucana Breeders Club Bulletin 1986 vol 8 2.pdf)

By 1990, the Club had just over 100 members and had spread all across the US, including Hawaii.

Stay tuned for more of the history of the ABC and join us for our celebration of 40 years at the 2018 National ABC Meet at the Dayton Fancy Feathers Poultry Show, Oct 5-6, 2018, Greenville, OH

After a short drop in 2006-2007, ABC membership and active participation began to rise and, by the start of 2009, the rolls had risen above 200 active members for the first time in club history! (membersrcehistory.pdf)

Ameraucana exhibits at the shows, and ABC participation in those shows increased during this time, as well.  For 2006, there were 9 ABC sanctioned meets across the US - mostly in the mid-west. At the end of 2014, there were 25 ABC sanctioned meets across the USA, spreading across a much wider area.  Not just the number of sanctioned meets, but the number of Ameraucanas being shown was increasing, as well.  In 2006, there were a total of just over 400 Ameraucanas shown at ABC sanctioned meets (243 Bantams, 161 Large Fowl).  Beginning in 2013 (1210 Ameraucanas) and through the end of 2014, the numbers would begin a stunning rise that has continued to this date (1757 Ameraucanas entered in ABC sanctioned meets: 345 Bantams and 1412 Large Fowl).  Of course, these are just the numbers reported; there probably were more that were not reported or not at ABC sanctioned meets. (ABC Meets 2006-2014.pdf)

A great article, written by Patty Pickard, "The Art of Cage Training", was re-published in the ABC Fall Bulletin in 2010.  If you've not had a chance to read that, I would recommend it.  (ABC Bulletin 2010 31 3.pdf)

The present day Ameraucana Breeders Club point system was introduced in 2011 and actually began in 2012. (ABC Bulletin 2011 vol 32 3.pdf).  The first one to earn the title of Master Exhibitor, with 800 points, was Jerry DeSmidt.  Jerry completed the points for this award on October 4, 2014 at the Southern Ohio Poultry Association show. (Master Exhibitors.pdf)

The new point system recognizes our Junior members, as well. While there were no Juniors who had qualified by the end of 2014, they more than made up for it beginning in 2015, as we'll see in the next ABC history post.

The next, and final, post in this series of the history of the Ameraucana Breeders Club covers the period 2015-2018 - a short time frame, but a lot of exciting changes, progress, and growth.  Stay tuned to learn more about the history of the Ameraucana Breeders Club.  Join now!  You can join online at ameraucanabreedersclub.org/membership.html and you'll be automatically entered in the drawing for the New Member Drawing at our National.  Winners do not need to be present.

This has been so successful the last couple of Nationals, we're doing it again this year!

The Countdown Begins!
The 2018 ABC National Silent Auction is coming soon
How it works - This is a sealed bid auction, which means that no one knows who has bid what until the auction is over. Some items are for onsite bidding only, which means you must be present at the site to bid, the items are present at the show, and you will be able to take your winning items home with you. For all live birds, they are also entered in the competition and can be moved once judging is over.

We will also have several items on which we are opening off-site bidding. These can be bid on by those present at the show, too, and are also sealed bids, so no one will know who has bid how much until the auction ends. You can bid as many times as you want. While onsite bidders will have up until the auction ends to enter a bid, offsite bidders must submit their bids to info@ameraucanabreedersclub.org by Friday, Oct 5th at 5PM EST. Send your bid with the following in the subject line: "Silent Auction Bid", and please include your name, street address, city/state/zip, and phone number, along with the item you are bidding on and the amount of your bid in the body of the email.

You must be a resident of the continental US for any items requiring shipment, or make arrangements for items to be shipped to a US address! No out of country shipping on any of these items. Shipping of live chicks and eggs for hatching will begin in the Spring 2018, and the ABC will assist in coordinating the communication between the winning bidder and the donor of the items. You do not need to be a member of the ABC to bid!

In the case of more than one bid having the same amount and being the highest bid, those bids with the highest bid on them will be folded up, put back in the envelope, and one bid will be drawn. So, for example, three people bid $50 on the same item and $50 is the highest bid on that item. Those three bids are folded up - so no one can see the names - and placed back into the envelope. Larry Clionski or Susan Mouw, or their appointed representative, will draw one of those bids and that becomes the winning bid.

All onsite winning bids must be completed and paid for before removing the items. All offsite winning bids will be notified by email and invoiced via Paypal the week following the National Meet.

All proceeds from this Silent Auction are used for next year's National Meet.

If you would like to donate an item for either the onsite or offsite auction, please send me an email to info@ameraucanabreedersclub.org.  Feel free to include pictures of what you're donating, or pictures of parents of future chicks/eggs.

Onsite Auction Items:
  • One started pair of black large fowl Ameraucanas, to be picked up at the National, donated by Susan Mouw

Offsite Auction Items  (Note: for chicks or eggs, these will be shipped in the 2019 spring hatching/breeding season):
  • 10 chicks from black x black lines, donated by Susan Mouw
  • 10 chicks from blue x blue lines (could be blue/black/splash), donated by Susan Mouw
  • 10 day old chicks buyer's choice of black, blue, splash and white, donated by Paul & Angela Smith

We are also working on a raffle item - a very nice item that would be handy in anyone's backyard. :)  More to come on that item soon!

News and Information / ABC's Annual New Member Drawing is coming up!
« on: September 04, 2018, 11:27:24 AM »
Every year, at the ABC's National Meet, we put all the new member's names that have joined since the last National, into a hat and draw out one winner.

So far, since we started this program, we've shipped out two incubators, and one Eco Glow 20 Brooder Heater, and 1 Premier 1 brooder heater.

This year, the winner will have a choice of either a 3-hole large fowl show box (top of picture) or a 4-hole bantam show box (bottom of picture).  These showboxes are made by Vinson Workman and are the best!  I have several of the 3-hole LF boxes and love them!

Members do not need to be present to win. Drawing will held at our 2018 National Meet and 40th Anniversary Celebration, at the Dayton Fancy Feathers Poultry Show, 10/6-7/2018, Greenville, OH.

To enter, just join the ABC!  You can join online at Join the ABC!

40th Anniversary Celebration
History of the Ameraucana Breeders Club

After the sharp membership increases in the last half of decade of the 1980's, the Ameraucana Breeders Club membership showed a slower, but steady growth over the next decade and a half.  In the March 1990 bulletin, there were 105 active members in the ABC and by 2005, membership covered most of US, except Wyoming, New Hampshire, Maine, and Hawaii. membersrcehistory.pdf

While the growth may not have been as explosive as the earlier years, dedication to the improvement of the Ameraucana breed, both bantam and large fowl, certainly did not falter. A great article on Ameraucana Type,  written by M.K. Gilbert, is still a great go-to article and reference material for new and experienced breeders alike. ABC Bulletin 1990 vol 12 3.pdfABC Bulletin 1990 vol 12 3.pdf

Sadly, much of the history of the ABC for this decade and a half has been lost to the winds of time, as the bulletins for that period were either destroyed or not passed on by previous Administrations. However, we can still see the impact of the progress made by those dedicated early breeders of the Ameraucana today - in our show rooms, grow out pens, and breeding pens.  We owe much to their dedication and commitment.

40th Anniversary Celebration
History of the Ameraucana Breeders Club - Part V

The early 80's brought more excitement to the (then) Ameraucana Bantam Club!  In 1981, the fifth edition of the ABA Standard of Perfection included the complete Standard for the "Ameraucana" bantam, in white and wheaten varieties.

And the membership kept growing! The 1981 Summer Bulletin reported 40 active members, from all over the US and in England. (Ameraucana Bantam Club Summer Bulletin, 1981) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201981%20vol%203%202.pdf

On Nov. 12, 1983, at the combined APA/ABA National Show held in Columbus Ohio at the Ohio National, and one of the largest poultry shows of record at that time, had entries for all currently accepted varieties of the bantam Ameraucanas except buff.  75 bantam Ameraucanas were exhibited by Don Cable, Jerry Segler, John Wunderlich, Bernard Kellogg, Dave Horman, Mike Gilbert, John Fugate, Ray Gwynes, Frank Gary, and Bill Holland.  The ABA accepted all varieties shown and the buffs (which were not entered), making 8 accepted varieties of Ameraucana bantam: blue, black, wheaten, blue wheaten, brown red, silver, buff, and white. (Ameraucana Bantam Club Winter Bulletin, 1983) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201983%20vol%205%204.pdf

APA followed in their footsteps at their next national meeting in the summer of 1984, accepting the same eight varieties in large fowl! (Ameraucana Bantam Club Summer Bulletin, 1984) http://www.ameraucanabreedersclub.org/docs/bulletins/ABC%20Bulletin%201984%20vol%206%202.pdf

By the end of the first half of the 80s and less than a decade into the ABC's formation, all eight Ameraucana varieties, in both large fowl and bantam, were official!

Stay tuned for more history of the ABC and be sure to come help us celebrate 40 wonderful years at our 40th Anniversary Celebration and National meet at the Dayton Fancy Feathers show, in Greenville, OH, on Oct 5-6, 2018!

1979 was another hallmark, and exciting, year for the Ameraucana (then) Bantam Club!

In the summer of '79, the first proposed standard, following a vote by the membership, was published in the 1979 Summer Bulletin, calling for ""slate colored shanks by an overwhelming margin. We have voted for red earlobes by a nearly two to one margin. We have decided on the weight category calling for 30 oz. mature cockbirds." (Ameraucana Bantam Club, Summer Bulletin, 1979)

The first Club election was held that fall, with Bernard Kellogg as acting Election Commissioner. Mike Gilbert was elected President, and Don Cable became the first Secretary/Treasurer. (Ameraucana Bantam Club, Fall Bulletin, 1979)

The year ended with some exciting news from the Golden Gate Club poultry show in Pasadena, CA. ABA Judge Bill Holland, of Idaho, judged the first ABA qualifying meet for bantam wheaten and white Ameraucanas, and reported "The birds were of consistent color and type" (Ameraucana Bantam Club, Winter Bulletin, 1979)

What an exciting year! The year 2018 is going to be another hallmark year for the Ameraucana Breeders Club! Join us for our 40th Anniversary Celebration at the Dayton Fancy Feathers Poultry show, and our 2018 National Meet, Oct 6, 2018, Greenville, OH.

Stay tuned for more exciting news from the archives of the Ameraucana Breeders Club.
