Exhibiting & Promoting / Re: 2015 Ameraucana National Meet

Sharon, our family has a history of always needing something on vacation, so we Always seemed to end up going to Walmart during our trips wherever we traveled.  At least near Fayetteville we can finally go to one of the original Walmarts.  Sam Walton's home is pretty famous too and Thorncrown Chapel is near by, both by architect Faye Jones.  When in Rome...

Joking aside, I'm sure either MO or AR will be great locations Paul.  But the national has been at Sedalia twice, maybe it would be good to give Fayetteville a shot?  They may just be hungry enough to give it some extra effort and good ole southern hospitality.

I've never been to a double show, sounds like a lot of work.

The beach does sound like fun Susan.  But if we go to Arkansas we can take John down to visit the Clinton Library and visit P Allen Smiths place along the river.   Some say it's quite the place.  I heard that one of our members was there this summer to pick up some Wyandottes.

Definitely room for improvement!  Very interesting, some of the breed numbers are quite different than I would have thought.   Especially OEGB.  It looks like they added the OE Jamboree many times over. BTW, The Jamboree is amazing if you are ever in the area the first weekend of November.  The colors and quality of all the entries are a real pleasure to enjoy even if you don't have any interest in the breed.  One year they had nearly 2000, all single decked.  A sea of OE.

So in the other club, with one director, who helps to dialogue/encourage the members or potential members in different areas of the country?   It seems that The one director is really sort of an under secretary who really only answers meet requests?  You have national and state mets only?  That director would not be familiar with all of the shows in different parts of the country, so it's really just up to individual members all around?  The up side to this approach?

Sounds like there have been a number of changes over the past number of years.  Have these been created because of demographics of membership?

Lee, again the arrangement looks nice and it looks like the birds enjoy the generous and varied spaces, including the tunnel.  It should keep them busy and out of trouble.

DeWayne, the skid pen is very well built, heavy enough to last a long time and keep the birds safe..  It appears you can move it to new ground with out too much trouble.  I also like to use "found" materials.  Besides the cost savings, it gives me a good feeling to find a new use for an old object/materials.  Part of growing up with depression era family members I guess.  I'd say I like being "Green".

Nice coops, all of them!  I especially like the grain silo. I'd love to have one like that to turn into a camp shed.  Yes, insulating that one would be real fun.  And how clean and neat.  I agree with John that you all put a lot of extra effort and energy into your birds.

How long does it take for them to learn how to use the bridges?

Art,  Good luck contacting those folks closer to you that we discussed.  Keep me posted if you don't find any wheatens before fall.  And I hope those blues and blacks continue to grow out well.  You will have to keep the males separated out if you want the beards to grow out full.  They do love to pick the beards clean.

It's never easy breaking bad news to folks.  Most people are happy in Bliss with what they have and where they are in life and in raising chickens.  The hatchery source of birds and information will continue until most of us are old and grey, or beyond.  Lots of folks think that hatcheries have quality birds in all breeds/varieties.  But they just don't.  I wouldn't buy Barred Rocks from a hatchery and expect a quality flock of birds. People don't know.
We just have to be patient and kind to those who have been sold something else.  We have to give them enough info to see if they are interested in going thru the effort to obtain and raise quality birds.  Some will be interested and open to learn more. Some will just want to run from the truth and keep their head in the sand.  One convert at a time.

John,   Thanks for the list.  Im not a really good computer person and my current computer is an apple and a rotten one at that.   Jobs and Gates don't seem to like each other very much.  Between these parameters, Im not working with much here.

We are trying to develop more breeding families of buff in the region.  These can be quite beautiful and hearty birds.  We are located in North Carolina and have several youngsters started this year.  Drop us a note if you're interested in working with this variety.  Thanks!   drccash@yahoo.com

Breeding / Re: hen that does not breed.

Hens and Roosters can become bored easily and start egg eating.  Its a hard habit to break.  You can try the dish soap filled egg, move them to another pen or do anything that might change the environment.  Change the nest to a blind nest or trap nest might help.  But most of all make sure they don't want for anything.  Make sure they have oyster shell and granite grit.  Give them plenty of green stuff, cabbage, free range or anything to occupy their time.  I seem to do better with crumbles rather than pellets.  It takes a little longer for them to eat with crumbles.  They waste more if your not careful.  Good Luck!
