Don’t you have to be a APA member for 5 years to be counted as a breeder ?

Breeding / Re: Record Keeping
« on: December 31, 2017, 12:15:51 AM »
I am making a list of things that breeders like to keep track of in their flocks. Good record keeping is crucial to make improvements in a breeding program. So far from the feedback received, some of the most important things to keep a record of are Name/ID, DOB, Gender, Color Variety, Egg color (if applicable), Disposition, Strengths, Weaknesses, Pen assignment, and Cockbird assignment (if applicable). Is there anything else that you like to keep record of? Thanks for your participation!

What age a pullet first laid her egg, also the temperament of the breeding male

I have just uploaded the Meet Report from this show, but there are some significant gaps, particularly in the exhibitors names.  If you attended this show and can help fill in some of these gaps, please contact me or Temple at meets@ameraucanabreedersclub.org.

2017 ABC Nationals Hutchinson MN / Re: 2017 National Meet location
« on: October 10, 2016, 05:23:15 PM »
Thanks Jerry and Gordon for the information, the Matrix is very helpful.   I think that the Il-Mo show is the best choice if you take into account size, location and time of year for folks in the southern portions of the country.  I agree that its never going to be perfect for everyone.  And we always stand a chance in having bad weather the later in the year and farther north.   I wonder if you have a later back up show in case something happens next year in the State of choice?  Everyone please chime in as early as possible so Jerry and Gordon can have your input.

What about the western portion of the country? People live out there too lol

Exhibiting & Promoting / Western National Show???
« on: October 10, 2016, 12:07:40 AM »
I just would like to bring this up.

It would be nice to have a Western National Show. A lot of these National Shows are held too faraway for people in the West/South West region.

There is precedent already for these types of shows, the Wyandotte Club has an Eastern and Western National Show.

Modesto is a possibility or Perhaps the Tucson poultry show that averages 1,100-1,300 entries per year.

Breeding / Re: Blacks based on silver
« on: September 22, 2016, 06:43:49 PM »
Lindsay,  I don't have blacks but they are probably the most popular color so you should be able to find some close by.  I am not sure if most people will know for certain if they have complete silver based line.  Most breeding blacks prefer Gold based lines.  Though some blue lines are supposedly based silver because it offers advantages for better blue color.  So those breeders might use a black bird from their Blue/Blue crosses to reinforce their matings.  But it still allows them to stay inside a silver based line.    I am curious, what would you be using this bird to accomplish?

Hi Don,

Thank you so much for your response. I am looking for blacks based on silver to use in my self blue/lavender pens. I have been doing a lot of research on the lavender color and the genetics behind it, particularly in regard to leakage and the k gene. After speaking with a few breeders that have been working with the lavender color for several years, I have been encouraged to find blacks based on silver to use in those pens, as it is suspected that the straw colored (red) leakage that occurs in self blues/lavenders may be from using gold based black birds. Some breeders also feel that the slow feathering K gene may attach to gold based birds more easily, although it is not cut in stone. Anyway, most of my research is hypothetical at this point, and based on the experience of others, but I'd like to put the hypothesis to work, and test it.

You can use gold based blacks. Just use females. If you have a Self Blue rooster that you know is silver base, just breed him to the gold base black females. And ONLY use the daughters cause the daughters will only inherit the silver gene. You would have to cull the males.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Re: Fall Double Show in AZ
« on: September 08, 2016, 12:56:13 PM »
Sounds like a great location with a lot for exhibitors and family to enjoy in the area.  And they had a great show with over 600 birds for their very first show.  Sounds like a great enthusiastic group.  I hope you have a good turn out of Ameraucanas and have a good weekend.  Wish it were closer.

It really is Don, the whole town got behind the show. And Lacy Greer is very well respected and a lot of top exhibitors come to support him. I think people read/heard on how well put the show was.

Hi Cesar

This show isn't on the list of meets - did you want this as an ABC Meet, so attendees will receive points?  If so, email Paul about getting this set as a meet asap, if entries haven't closed already.

Thanks

Susan

I just spoke to Lacy Greer and that would be awesome to add them to the meet list.
Its a dual show

-4 Corners show
-Apache County show.

Paul? I think it falls under Jean, Right?

Exhibiting & Promoting / Fall Double Show in AZ
« on: September 08, 2016, 07:06:16 AM »
Fall Double Show. October 28 and 29th in St. Johns AZ. This site is hosting the 4 Corners show along with the Apache County Poultry show.

There will be four well known Judges, The inaugural Apache County Show was a huge success with breeders coming from neighboring states. We need a strong Ameraucana showing. This is a lovely small town with a beautiful venue/barn and St Johns has some prime rock hunting location. Make a weekend out of it and lets get an Ameraucana on champion row.

Ill be going :)
