Where are you located? Might be able to help you out on the black cockerel but can\'t ship.

As I researched more on this topic, I came across this very good article by Peter J. Brown, First State Veterinary Supply, Inc. https://www.firststatevetsupply.com/content/view/20/37/

To bring this to the top: Is there any use giving an already infected bird the vaccine? Any thoughts on treatment for infected birds?

Donations from Splash breeders to offset the club\'s expenses for getting the variety recognized is a good idea. Count me in when the time comes.

Are we any closer to requesting our splashes be recognized or has the interest waned?

Exhibiting & Promoting / Meet Request

Sharon:

Membership in HOTOPA is not required to exhibit at the show but since the club is in your areas you may want to join. There will be many breeds represented the HOTOPA show.

Meets, in general terms, are set by various clubs for their breeds at different shows to promote through competition their breeds. For instance, the Rosecomb club is having their national meet and the Rhode Island Red Club is having a district meet at HOTOPA\'s show in addition to the Ameraucana club.

A national meet is sanctioned by the a national club leadership and is designed to attract birds from throughout the US. A district meet is still sanctioned by the parent club but for a smaller geographical area (district or state). You would expect to see more Ameraucanas than normal at HOTOPA show because Paul has set the meet there.

A meet allows club members to compete for awards (rosettes, points, etc) not given out by a show. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet and learn from fellow breeders.

Our website has further information on Ameraucana meets. If you don\'t already subscribe, the Poultry Press has tons of information on showing.

You can go to the Heart of the Ozarks Poultry Association\'s website http://www.hotopa.com for information about their show. Yes, it is open to anyone.

If you\'re interested in exhibiting at this show you are fortunate that Paul set the meet so early. That gives you almost a year to get ready.

I appreciate Paul\'s help in getting my three Ameraucanas out of the American class and in with the rest of the breed in the correct class. I had been assured that it would not make a difference that my birds were 4-5 rows away from the other Ameraucanas. Paul had his doubts however. Even after my birds were moved, one of my pullets was over looked until I pointed her location out to the clerk.

Paul could have used those three coops for some of his birds but chose to graciously help me.

Breeding / Breeding Blues and Blue Wheatens

John:

I finally remembered where I read the comments about splash breeding. It was on the Cochin club\'s forum. Below are quotes from two different individuals about Cochins.

\"I talked to the judge at Crossroads about the placing of Splash birds trying to understand. I know the lighter colored birds did not place as well as the darker ones. He comment was that the color was just too light/washed out on some birds of good type.\"

Second quote: \"The SOP for Splash is Slaty blue and white that has a faint bluish gray tinge. The undercolor s/be slaty blue and sooty white.

If you keep breeding Splash to Splash, you will wash out the Slaty Blue. Hence the recommendation to breed back to Blue or Black as needed. I would make sure if breeding back to Black that it is a B/B/S Black, and not a (regular) Black.\"

It seems to me that you would be correct, John. I don\'t think good colored splash birds mated to each other would have washed out (light colored) progeny.

I was reading recently in another breed\'s forum about splash breeding and it raised question in my mind about Ameraucanas. I don\'t recall the breed I was reading about but someone there cautioned against too frequent breeding of splash to splash. This person said this tended to wash out the \"blue/black\" in the offspring after several generations. Has anyone experienced this in Ameraucanas or is it even a concern?

What are we looking at as the color standard for our splashes? Or are we not to that point yet in having the color recognized?

Exhibiting & Promoting / How important is a full color bulletin?

Color is more attractive but can be expensive as previously mentioned. Color photos of the birds is helpful but the text portion can certainly be in black and white.
