Had the NPIP guys out here yesterday and one of them noticed one of my cocks has 4 spurs - a smaller one growing just below the large one on each leg. Is this common? Is it a defect? Of course, this is the one Fuzz has made a pet of that I was going to let him show...
Also, I\'ve noticed most of the cocks I see at shows have had their spurs cut. Is this expected, or is it just done for convenience because they\'re handled a lot? Would an Ameraucana w/spurs be at a disadvantage?
And, if they need to be removed, when/how do I do it?

Mutiple spurs are a breed chacteristic of some breeds like the sumatras which may have been used at some point in the developement of blacks.Cull to remove it from your gene pool.I do not cut spurs.Remove only to regrow damaged spurs.I feel it is better to leave them alone.

I\'ve seen it in the silver variety. What color was your bird?

I believe the Standard is silent on the subject of spurs with regard to Ameraucana. Hence, I have never considered multiple spurs an issue that needed to be dealt with.

Mike,
Not specifically applied to the SOP for ameraucanas, but on page 31 under Cutting For Defects:
Shanks and Toes:
.......
(b) All Breeds Chickens, except Sumatras
1. Extra Spur -- each extra ...........1/2 pt (cut)

He\'s black. I\'ve gotten rid of most of my blacks, but Fuzz has been carrying him around like a stuffed toy for 3 years. The plan was to use him over the lavenders, but I did keep one other black cock. The eye color on that one is not as good, though.

So far they only have 3 juniors showing so, since it\'s not a DQ, guess we\'ll take him along.

Thanks Jean. I had never checked that out. Since I don\'t remember many if any multiple spurs here, guess I never felt the need. Never too old to learn, right?

I\'ve been reading my new SOP a lot since I got it.
