Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: Leg Bands vs. Wing Bands
« on: April 08, 2015, 09:41:06 AM »
Susan - I order 4, 5, & 6 from Sheryl which will get the chicks up to a month old. I put size 4 on them as I take them out of the incubator and then switch to size 5 about 10 days later, then switch to size 6 after 10 more days. By the time they out grow size 6, they are about a month old. MAKE SURE TO CHECK BANDS OFTEN!

After they have outgrown size 6 rubber bands, I switch them to Hakes' Twin City Poultry Supplies bandettes (size 7), which will take them through another few months, then I switch them to size 9. Here is a link to Victor Hakes' website: https://www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_24&zenid=7d36bde79e7c6c1024055ce3fa848489

He was a great supporter of the ABC last year and is a great guy to deal with!

Hi Justin!

Do you go to many poultry shows? If so, are you seeing many Ameraucanas there? Fill us in  :)

You may want to check with Jerry DeSmidt, Matt Parker, or Hannah Brush. Those are the only people I know offhand that raise whites (although I'm sure there are more in the Breeders Directory) and I know Jerry sometimes ships adult birds.

Awesome idea! I think something like that would have the potential to help with ABC growth, too. If you decide to do that, I will advertise there to help get the ball rolling.

It would be interesting to see what you mean by a classified ad format. It is kind of odd that not many of us use this Market Place section any more than we do and I'm not really sure why we don't. Huh!  :o

FOR SALE - I have several chicks left from a March 19th hatch and some from an April 3rd hatch. For local pickup only since they are too old to ship now. I'm also selling hatching eggs. Please call 330-416-8419 for pricing, availability, and specifics.

I am close to her here in Ohio. Do you want me to contact her or have you made arrangements with her already?

Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: To wash or not to wash?
« on: April 05, 2015, 11:17:14 PM »
I use to dip (not wash) my eggs in diluted Oxine (6 oz per gallon) but really didn't notice a difference so I stopped. All of my eggs are very clean to start with. I do, however, run the Oxine solution of 4oz per gallon in my incubator a few days in advance when I'm getting my temperature and humidity leveled out as I feel it helps disinfect my machine. Then, right before I place the eggs in there, I top of the water levels with straight clean water that helps dilute it more so I don't possibly hurt the chicks breathing...although it might actually be good for them to breath when diluted. I have found that there is also no odor after the hatch, even if I don't clean my incubator for a day or two after the hatch.

Breeding / Re: Skittles my special splash chick!

You may end up with a blue chick. I had one that I thought was a splash when it was hatched, but then it started turning. It first showed up on it's wings like that. I also had a splash named Skittles. Cool name for a splash. Keep us all updated with pictures as your chick grows up.

Wow, Susan! You wrote that article? How interesting! That's a lot of information to absorb.

Sharon, I wrote an article a couple of years ago for the Labrador Quarterly that puts how genes are combined in offspring in fairly simple terms. It was written to address an inherited heart problem in Labs, but might be helpful in understanding the basics of genetics. I could post it, if you'd like to read it.

Yes, please do. I'd like to read it.

Here's an idea. Get a shepherd to watch over your peeps. I, uh...hmmm. Yeah, I think they'll be safer.

Anytime, DeWayne...but actually the credit (at my end) goes to Paul because he was the one who shared that information with me a couple of years ago.

Here is information of where I bought boxes a while back. You can try there, too:

Barnes Paper Company.  Their head quarters is in Birmingham, AL. but the chick boxes are shipped out of Springdale, Arkansas. Their number is:  479-756-3350.
