The 2006 Bay City Poultry Club show will be held on October 14 & 15, in Frankenmuth, Michigan! Frankenmuth is one of the top tourist destinations in Michigan.
Note this is a new location...please pass the word and make reservations ASAP.
The judges have been hired and everything is coming together - but we need you.
All the info is on our club\'s website, BayCityPoultryClub.org (http://www.baycitypoultryclub.org), along with many helpful links.
-
If you have any intention of showing Ameraucanas at our National Meet and are not a club member now is the time to join. The first ABC Bulletin of the year will be out at the end of this month, so you should join now in order to receive all 4 quarterly Bulletins this year. Membership is from January 1 thru December 31, so join now to get the most for your money. Please use the membership form from the ABC website.
It is not too early to donate awards for the National Meet. Just send a check and a note whether to apply it as needed or toward a specific cash or plaque award.

Hey John...how come the show isn\'t going to be at Midland Fairgrounds?
Also what would be an avarage donation for the show?
-
The Midland County Fairgrounds has a larger than usual horse meet on the weekend of our show this year and they will be using the buildings that we used last year. The Fairgrounds has offered to rent another building to our club, but we decided to take this opportunity to move the show to Frankenmuth. For the last several years of more I have thought Frankenmuth would be the ideal town for a poultry show. They are known for \"world famous chicken dinners\" and I think live chickens can be tied in somehow. Bronner\'s CHRISTmas Wonderland is only about a mile from the show and it is the world\'s largest Christmas store.
Even if you don\'t show at the show you will have a great weekend going to the show and being a tourist. Birch Run is just down the road from Frankenmuth and it has a huge Outlet mall that attracts people from all over Michigan and Ontario.
FYI, I am also Show Superintendent for the Bay City club.
Generally the members that donate toward awards give between $10 and $50. Our District Director, Teresa Brittnacher, is considering buying the same painted plates and cups to give as awards as were given out at last year\'s National. They would cost us $240. We need lead time to get awards, so as I\'ve mentioned it is not too early to donate.
-
This is the building we\'ll have the show in, in Heritage Park, Frankenmuth. It is 150 feet square!
-
John, you have me really looking forward to this already! Of course, I may have to make a side trip to Midland for the horse show! I don\'t know how many places there are in Frankenmuth that are famous for the chicken dinners, but a friend of mine has family in that area and said the chicken dinners at Zeldan\'s (she wasn\'t sure of the name) are excellent.
-
John, you count on me for the usual amount we give each year to the national meet. Let me know how soon you need it in case a deposit needs to be made on those painted plates and cups. They were really a keepsake and ours are located in the china hutch in our dining room.

chicken dinners
There are two big restaurants across the street from each other and they feature the same family style Frankenmuth chicken dinners along with other menu options. I think the price on the dinners is up around $18 these days. The restaurants were started by brothers and are now operated by the F1 generation (so to speak). One is Zehnder\'s and the other is the Bavarian Inn, which even has a glockenspiel!
Frankenmuth was a Bavarian (German) Lutheran settlement started around 1850 and the locals have built a tourist industry around their heritage. Some of the other sister congregations or settlements in the area were Frankenhilf, Frankenlust and Frankentrost.
-
Mike,
I forgot to mention that Jerry Segler, from IL, called last week. He plans to retire around the first of October and is going to get some Ameraucana bantams. Hopefully he\'ll make it to the National meet. He still remembers buying sausage, at Willi\'s, in Frankenmuth, when he was up this way several years ago.
-
Okay, so what the heck is a glockenspiel?!
-
The Glockenspiel
Bavarian Inn\'s Glockenspiel Tower houses a magnificent 35-bell carillon, a beautiful figurine movement and an illuminated clock, all imported from Germany! Before striking the hour, and on each quarter hour, the clock sounds the 5-bell Westminster chime.
At 11 a.m., Noon, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 10 p.m. each day the Glockenspiel plays several selections which are immediately followed by figurine movement depicting the legend of the Pied Piper of Hameln.
I just copied and pasted that stuff from their website.
-
Cool! Will have to be sure to see that.
-
The Bay City Poultry Club website is up-to-date. Some changes include making the JR show a one day show. Jr\'s may still keep their birds cooped thru Sunday if they want to, but may coop out on Saturday afternoon. This should make it easier for more youth to show that have parents that don\'t show and can\'t take the time for a two day show.
I had said the building is 150 feet sq., but I was wrong. It is 150 by 184!
Our Judges are Phil Bartz, Matt Lhamon, and Jim Fegan. Jim will judge the Ameraucanas.
There is a Schedule of Events on the site, http://baycitypoultryclub.org/ and I\'ve scheduled the Ameraucana egg judging contest for 10am and our club meeting for 2:30, on Saturday.
Remember...it is not too early to make hotel or campground reservations. All the info you need is on the website. :D
-

I made our reservations today :) We\'ll be staying at the Holiday Inn Express, 12150 Dixie Hwy in Birch Run. Is that far from where you live John?
-
Not too far...about 6 or 7 miles. Just curious, why not at the host hotel just up the road?
We live in the country, 7 miles west of Frankenmuth and between Birch Run and Bridgeport which are at I-75 exits #144 and #136. I have a Printable Local Map (PDF file) on the BCPC site - http://baycitypoultryclub.org/ We live on Lange Rd. (gravel). It is an east/west half mile road that starts and stops in several places. Our place is as far west as the road goes, just before the \"ROAD ENDS\" sign. It is only a half mile south of Townline Rd. which is a straight shot to Frankenmuth and intersects M-83 about a 1 1/2 miles south of the park where the show will be.
-
Just curious, why not at the host hotel just up the road?
We are using \"reward points\" we\'ve earned and are able to stay at the Holiday Inn Express for free for both nights. Otherwise, we\'d definitely stay at the host hotel.
-
It\'s hard to beat free. That would be one of my all - time favorites. Glad you are coming.

The Poultry Press is \"the\" number one poultry publication and Bill Wulff, the owner, has always been very helpful to breed and show clubs by publishing articles that are submitted.
A month or so ago I have received a complimentary copy of the new Backyard Poultry magazine and decided to submit a press release regarding our local show club. It is the club that is hosting the ABC National. Anyway they have included the info in their June/July issue on page 61.
My point is we can do a lot to promote the our club and breed without spending any $. Let\'s be inventive and take every opportunity to do so.
-
John, I have a question regarding the Health Requirements listed on the Bay City website. Does the following apply to MI residents only, or to those coming from out of state?
\"Individual birds originating from non-National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) qualified flocks may be tested at the show or exhibition prior to being caged and housed with other poultry and if negative, be allowed to participate in the show or exhibition. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to arrange for such testing.\"
Someone that recently acquired chicks from me is considering joining the club and attending the show and needs to know - they live in Alabama
Thanks!
-
We don\'t test at the show, but the State rules allow for it. We just say please do it before you come. I generally include a copy of my flock test form with my entry form when entering. Here is what is part of what it says about out-of-state birds.
All poultry imported into this state for exhibition shall meet one or both of the following requirements:
Originate directly from a U.S. pullorum-typhoid clean flock as defined in Title 9 of the Code of Federal Regulations, and all amendments to that publication thereafter adopted pursuant to rules that the director may promulgate.
Have a negative official test for salmonella pullorum-typhoid within 90 days before importation and remain segregated from all poultry of unknown or positive salmonella pullorum-typhoid test state.
I\'m sure you\'ve already read our rule about LT vaccine:
Poultry vaccinated against Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) are allowed in the show, provided the vaccine hasn’t been administered within the six week period prior to the show date.
-
Harold Knapp and the Mrs., from NY, are going to the National meet also.
-
Curtis Beck, aka grisaboy, will be there too! :D
-
If you plan to make a donation toward awards for the National meet, please get a check in the mail to me.
I am in the process of laying out the Show Catalog for the show and the deadline to have your donation or anything else printed in the catalog is August 15th.
I will print and mail 250 Show Catalogs by September 1st. If you would like to take out an ad in it please get the ad info a check to me before August 15th. A quarter page ad is $30, half page is $50 and full page is $90.
Those ABC members that I know are coming to the National meet will receive a Show Catalog from the Bay City Poultry Club. An on-line show catalog is available also at http://baycitypoultryclub.org.
-
I just talked to Teresa Brittnacher, our NC District Director, and she isn\'t planning on coming to the National.
-
Just thought I would let you know that Jake and I are planning on coming to the Nationals also

I am recommending that the ABC have a silent auction at the National meet and not a raffle. I suggest that we only offer several items that are extra nice. One item that will be auctioned is the ABA blue wheaten portraits. They cost $500 and that money was donated by several members.
The host club is having a large raffle with many premium prizes as a fundraiser for them. I mean they (or we, since I\'m a member) have some great prizes!!!
I\'ve told the other members of our Bay City Poultry Club to expect 200 Ameraucanas...please help us achieve that goal.
-
This afternoon I picked up the awards that the show club is offering at our National meet. Here is one that you could win with the right Ameraucana.
It\'s a bit out of focus and has some glare, but you get the idea.
-
Show Catalogs were mailed on August 29th. They were sent to all ABC members in MI, IL, IN, WI, PA, OH and MN, plus others that I know plan to attend. I\'ve heard from some that they have not received their Show Catalogs yet. Entry Forms must be postmarked by September 30th. If you don\'t get your Catalog in time please go to http://www.baycitypoultryclub.org and print an Entry Form to use. All the needed info that is in the printed Show Catalog is also available from that website. If you know of someone that plans to attend, hasn\'t received a Catalog and doesn\'t have internet access let me know and I\'ll send an Entry Form and other info to them. :)
-
My show catalog came in today\'s mail. Thanks John.
-
Even though the Show Catalogs were mailed over two weeks ago about half the people I\'ve heard from got theirs right away and the others didn\'t. Yesterday Bill Wulff called and said he didn\'t receive one yet and Harold Knapp emailed and said he just got his today. If you still haven\'t received one that doesn\'t mean you won\'t, but either way remember Entry Forms must be postmarked by September 30th.
If you can\'t print one from the website let me know and I\'ll send one.
-
If anyone would like to help by being a cleck for a few hours during the show please let me know and I\'ll add your name to the list.
-
John just got my book today for the nationals, I will check with jake and see if he wants to clerk or not.
Jerry
-
John, I just talked to Jake and he would clerk for the show if you need him.
Jerry
-
A reminder that today is the postmark deadline for the Ameraucana National! So get those entry forms sent off!
The following link has the show information!
http://baycitypoultryclub.org/
-
Between Harold, Barbara, Michael, Mike, Bob, Paul, Jerry and me I know of over 150 Ameraucana entries. I do believe we\'ll hit the 200 mark when all the entries are in and counted.
Hope you can make it,
-
Bob Rennolet from SD will be at the ABC National Meet!
-
Some of you know that I was hoping for 200+ Ameraucana entries for the National Meet. You did it!
As of today, with most entries received, I count 223.
That\'s 219 in the Open show and 4 in the Jr show.
We have 1,059 total entries for the show and a few more may trickle in tomorrow. I was looking for between 1,000 and 1,200 and that is exactly where we are.
The maple trees around here are gorgeous and hopefully the fall colors will at there peak, in this area, for the show.
It\'s shaping up to be a great one (as usual).
