Title: Buckeye Fancy Feather Club - Canfield, OH
Post by: Sharon Yorks on May 28, 2014, 04:11:54 PM
The Buckeye Fancy Feather Club is having their annual poultry show in Canfield, OH in a couple of weeks and it has been approved as an Ameraucana Meet. Since the show is scheduled for June 14th and entries are due by June 7th, that doesn't leave much time to contact them and ask for an entry form so I felt it would be much easier for everyone if I posted it all on here so you can print it out.

Hope to see you there!  :)

I always like to check out the entry forms for ideas on how to improve ours.   This one says $3.00 per bird and $6.00 for double cooping.   Does that mean if one bird is entered for a double coop you pay $9.00 for that bird?     Seems high.   But then, double cooping is a pain when setting up, so maybe they are discouraging it?    We only allow it for large fowl males at our local show.

Back when I was in charge of the Fowl Fest I said something like "$3 per bird and $3 for a double coop" on the entry form (http://fowlfest.org/files/Entry-Form-2014-Spring-Fowl-Fest_02u87106.pdf) and I would get some that thought they didn't have to pay the $3 for the bird if they paid the $3 for a double coop.
As hard as it is to get exhibitors to fill in entry forms properly, just makes it all the more important for the entry forms and show rules to be correct to start with.

I read that to mean that if you enter one bird you pay $3 and they give you a single coop to put him in, but if you want a double coop for that bird, you pay an extra $3...totaling $6 for one bird in a double coop.

They are looking awesome! The Blue male is going to the show, and possibly the blue female. I've been having some fertility issues,  but am playing around with them to rule a few things out. Excited to see how they do at the show!

Mike, are you planning on going to this show?

Not a chance.   I'll still be recovering from our own show this Saturday, June 7th, the N.C. District meet.
A show secretary has a lot of paperwork to complete after a show - meet reports mostly.

The weather at the Canfield show was once again awesome! Close to 600 birds showed up to strut their stuff. The show producer commented how nice it was to see the number of Ameraucanas pick up from past years. It was nice to once again get a chance to visit with former Northeast District Director, Harold Knapp, who exhibited a black pullet and cockerel. It was also nice to finally meet and talk with Jamie Corey who exhibited a black cock and 4 blues.

In the Open class, there were 14 LF in 3 different varieties, shown by 6 exhibitors, all of which are members. There were 2 more exhibitors entered, but at the last minute couldn’t make it to the show. There were 6 birds in the Black variety. A cockerel I was showing won BV, BB, and then went on to win Champion AOSB. A black pullet shown by Debbie Mock won RV. The best C category went to Jamie Corey, and new member, Rich Snyder, of Country Star Farm took 2nd place K with his black cockerel. Harold’s black pullet won 2nd place P.

In the Blues, there were 7 birds shown by 4 exhibitors. A blue cockerel I was showing won BV and RB. New member, Abby Besida of Sunnyside Up Micro-Farm won RV and best C. Rich Snyder’s blue won 2nd place K and Jamie Corey took home best H and best P honors.

There was only 1 white, which was shown by Debbie Mock. He may not have had any other whites to compete against, but the judge spent a lot of time going back and forth trying to decide the RB between him and the blue. Debbie must have spent a lot of time getting him ready for the show and had him in very nice condition. I'm sorry I couldn't get a better picture of him. As Debbie can testify, many of the birds refused to cooperate and had requested not to be photographed. My knees decided not to argue with them.

In the Open Bantams, there were 5 bantams in 3 different varieties, shown by 3 exhibitors. BV in the blacks went to a Cock, shown by Steven Bozinovich and Kim Munden. The BV in the blue went to Cock, shown by Debbie Mock which also won BB. In the wheatens, BV and RB went to a Cock who refused to have his picture taken, (but can be seen on the cover of the December (2013) winter bulletin) which was shown by Debbie Mock who also had the RV with a Hen.

In the Junior Show, there were 8 LF shown in 3 varieties, by 5 exhibitors. BB and BV went to new member, Hannah Brush, with a white Pullet that also went on to win Champion AOSB. Hannah also won BV, RB, and Reserve AOSB with a black pullet. RV in the blacks was won by a black C which was shown by ABC member Xander Meeks. BV in the AOV went to Hannah Brush, with her golden duckwing C and RV in the AOV went to Xander Meeks with a splash H.

In the Junior Bantams, there were only 2 lavenders which were shown in the AOV by ABC member, Sadie Evans. BV went to her H and RV was won by a C.

Judging the Open LF was Glenn See. The Junior LF was judged by Curtis Oaks, and all of the bantams were judged by Daniel Dysart. All-in-all I thought this was a very nice show to attend and hope to see more members and Ameraucanas there next year.

Thanks Jeff and Cheryl. The blue cockerel, Cooter, was hatched on October 1st of last year and is a little over 8 months old. I had planned to keep him, but am really happy with the chicks I got this year, and since he will probably be molting by Nationals, I decided to show and sell him now. Debbie Mock is his proud new owner.

The black was hatched this past December 16th and was right at 6 months old. He was named, Shadow, at the show by his new owners and our newest junior members, Colton and Hannah Brush. I had originally planned to take Shadow's brother to Canfield, but the night before the show I noticed he had several broken feathers so I grabbed Shadow out of the pen the following morning and off we went. Thankfully, they will be showing him in the junior class :-) ... I hope :-/

Crazy story...Just as I pulled Cooter out of his show cage to show Debbie, a lady walks directly up to us, grabs Cooter's head, and twists it around to kiss him on the mouth! She literally stuck his beak in her lips and smacked her lips. As I'm standing there, totally dumbfounded with my mouth dropped open I'm sure, she looks over at me and said something like, "I just love this chicken!" I really can't remember the exact words she used (help me out here Debbie if you can remember). Again, I was standing there not knowing how to respond to something like that. After she walked away, I looked at Debbie and said, "What the heck was that?" I'm not sure those were my exact words, but something like that.

It has always been a concern of mine that one of my show birds could pick up something at a show and bring it back home to my other birds, and since I don't have a good place to quarantine, I've always elected to sell them at the show. Debbie...I certainly hope you quarantine him for a little while. There is no telling what that bird may have picked up there.

As a former breeder of blue bantams I really like that blue bantam cock.   Lacing can be seen on the wing secondaries when the photo is enlarged.   He also has the nice full hackle and a good tail angle.  He is holding his wings a little low and his comb could be a brighter red, but he's a really nice bird.  Where did Debbie get her blues?

Clif...I forgot to mention, the black cockerel that won was from eggs I had gotten from you. I knew that was a smart idea to ship you my male to breed to your hen. Half of this win belongs to you.

Great report, Sharon! Thanks for taking the pictures too. I can't beleive you got that many good ones. The birds were all being shy at the show.

We had a wonderful time at the show. It was our first meet, and all of the show staff were out of thier way to be helpful. We got to meet some other members and everyone was very kind.  The Juniors birds were really nicely conditioned, they should be really proud of themselves! Can't wait till my little monsters are a little older and able to show along side them.

I cant take much credit for the birds I entered. Most of my flock was wiped out by a predator after a dowsizing (I had just had my youngest), so most of the birds I brought I purchased this last fall and winter.

The bantam Blue Male was from Russ Blair. I really love the bantams I got from him! I *think* his line originated from you?  Most of the birds I took are from Sharon, Russ, and Patty.

Sharon's black AOSB champ was reeeeeaaallly nice. I think she may have wavered on bringing him home if he hadn't already been sold ;)  And yes getting Cooter worked out perfectly,  he is sharing the quarentine pen with my Black Pullet who was at the show.

I have to say that chicken kisser was pretty crazy.  I was just shocked! Eeek. Frosty the white was not impressed with her actions either!

Debbie...I probably would have wavered a bit if he hadn't have been pre-sold since he was the one I was planning to keep as a breeder, but I have 2 of his brothers so I'm happy for the Juniors who will be showing him.

Clif...I think the decision we made to combine our lines was a very smart one since yours has qualities that mine don't (especially combs) and mine have a certain body type. Same with the blues. Look at what our combo blues are doing with Josh, and look at the Elijah kids I'm going to cross them with. I can't wait to see next year's kids. The older Elijah boys are ones I hope to take to the National Meet. I just need to work on eye color now, which is another thing I think Josh's chicks will help with when I cross them. Time will tell.

Yes, Russ got the last of my blues.   I recognized the type and style of that blue cock.

Just a quick comment to keep this discussion alive.   Photos seldom tell the full story.   Getting a bird to pose in its natural position is a time consuming and often difficult task.   So this observation is directed at the photo, not the bird or its owner.   The bantam wheaten hen photo provides a perfect example of an incorrect bantam female tail.   By that I mean it is fan shaped and carried too high.   The correct tail would be carried at about 40 degrees or so above horizontal and would be neither pinched nor fan shaped from the side view.

Clif...Jeff is telling you stories. Who in the world would be out in their coop at 10:00pm? I mean, come on. Really? Well...it may have been like 9:30, maybe 9:40, but definitely not 10:00pm. Pfft! I wouldn't be out there at 10:00pm.  :o

Mike...yeah, probably my lack of photo skills. Any comments about the black?

Mike...yeah, probably my lack of photo skills. Any comments about the black?

Love the broad feathers in the tail, and assume the primaries and secondaries would be wide too.   Really like his condition and green sheen, red comb, etc.    I just think he has a little more length of the main tail than he needs, and it could blend in with the back a tad better, more like your RB LF Blue male.   Great comb on that blue by the way, but he just doesn't have the width of feather as the black.  Blues almost never do.  Also, the two main sickles are to extend beyond the main tail, and I'm not seeing that in the photo of the black.  The shape of the tail is a bit awkward in that particular pose.   Don't worry, some of my brown reds are the same way.   It's nothing too major.  Congratulations on a fine win.

Thanks for the input! She does tend to lift and fan her tail when agitated. I have another female who is more on the pinched side of the spectrum. I'm hoping between the offspring of both I can even them out? I love having my birds kindly critiqued, there is no betterway for me to learn!!!  I know it's hard to do from photos. My birds never seem to want to cooperate to give accurate photos either.
