I\'ve had this in 2 different strains of Ameraucanas now...they have this asthma like wheeze when excited...
i.e. like when you chase them around to catch one.
Otherwise they don\'t wheeze.
None have any visible upper respiratory symptoms.
Does anybody know what this might be?
Thanks.

Vicky,
My roosters do this also. I had them swabbed this spring for virus and there was nothing in the cultures. They were clean!
I am led to believe it is just an ameraucana thing. If anyone else out there might have an explanation for this please reply.

None of my ameraucanas wheeze, however my white leghorns wheeze so bad when they are excited that I fear one may pass away someday when I try to catch it!

Jean & Mark, thank you for your replies.
So do you suppose this is some type of asthma?

Have you ever thought of treating them with ivermetin. Sounds like the same symptoms as airsac mites in cage birds.

My birds get ivermectin twice a year for worming.

I believe it is the shape of the nasal passage. If someone knows a cosmetic surgeon who works on noses or an otolaryngologist, it would make for some really interesting conversation.
