News and Information / Sad day
« on: June 15, 2017, 10:57:45 PM »
Yesterday was a sad day for me but it was coming eventually. I sold my flock. It was a fun few years learning about the breed and making friends and communicating with others but a lot things happened and I just left go of my flock. There was a few real nice birds that left my house and I will miss talking chicken to all of you but it will be less of a strain on my family and me. Thanks everyone who helped me over the past years learn about the breed and answer my questions.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Donation
« on: March 31, 2017, 10:31:08 AM »
My birds just started laying but only a few and usually they are all laying good by now. I was contacted by a school teacher wanting to incubate eggs in her classroom and the teacher didn't want the chicks. She thought the blue eggs would be neat for the children to watch. So she found a person to take the chicks that hatch and I donated almost 4 dozen eggs to the teacher for her children to watch hatch. I told her about the breed and our club and she is going to pass all of the info I gave her to the person getting the eggs. So there is a chance we may get another new member.

I am going to be collecting Brown Red eggs this week to start filling the many, many, many orders I have for them so everyone waiting on them can finally start getting them from me. Thanks for your patience also as my breeding season is starting off very slow and I don't know why. I even ran lights in my new coop this winter and I didn't see much difference in egg production.

My Brown Reds are the only variety that started also so I will start filling them orders first until the rest of birds are off of vacation.

I felt the school teacher could also use the information I gave her to help teach the children about the breed and maybe get a few kids interested in raising them. It may also help our battle on teaching the difference of Easter Eggers verses Ameraucanas. It could help promote the breed in my area as well.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Chicken coop I built
« on: November 19, 2016, 07:44:23 PM »
I thought I would show everyone the trailer that I turned into a chicken coop. I'm not a contractor so go easy on me. Lol. I still have some touching up to do to it. I'm painting the words Ameraucanas on it yet and I have to get more hinges for the egg box. I put a light in it with a timer though. It is easy to move and I have 50 hens in it and lots of room to spare yet.

News and Information / Shipping on Saturdays.
« on: April 23, 2016, 11:48:28 AM »
I was informed from another breeder that you can ship birds on a Saturday! I didn`t know that and i thought the USPS just froze on the weekends. Well i was wrong. I toke a box of eggs to my local PO last Saturday and the lady asked me if i wanted it shipped express 2 day for $40. I said no they are just eggs. So i did the regular $12 and change. Well the eggs arrived to the Carolinas from Pa on that Monday! So it only toke 2 days anyway. But i asked the lady if packages stayed in transit on Sundays and she said yes.So i asked if dirds would be ok to ship on Saturdays and she said it was better to send them then. Well since my eggs went through so fast and i saved a great deal of money, im going to try to use Saturdays to ship. Some people probably already knew this but i thought this may be helpful to the ones that didn`t know. Like me. Lol

Housing, Health & Hatching / chick boxes
« on: March 04, 2015, 05:31:25 PM »
I was looking through some old posts on shipping boxes. Does anyone know of any newer sites that sells shipping boxes? I have been using boxes for birds but they are peigon boxes and starting to get a little pricey. I am looking for chick boxes mostly that are fairly cheap.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Lice and Mites
« on: December 05, 2014, 06:00:04 PM »
I was told today that ashes from a wood stove are good to put in chicken pens to get rid of mites and lice. Has anyone else ever heard of this before? I am wondering if it is true and if anyone else uses them? Thanks.

« on: October 18, 2014, 05:44:18 PM »

I was on the GQF website but i couldn`t find a motor. I called them but i haven`t got my return call. I am hopefull someone knows a cheap site also. Thank you.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Argument
« on: July 26, 2014, 07:08:22 AM »
I was at tractor supply yesterday getting feed and they were out of what i wanted. I asked the lady that was working in that department, if there was any in the back. She said no. Then she asked me what kind of chickens i have. I told her and she said she had Ameraucanas to. I asked her if they were pure breed and she said yes. So i asked her what kind she had and she said just Ameraucanas. So i pulled this site up on my phone and showed her the picuters of the different varieties and she looked at me and said well these came from the hatchery and they wouldn`t lie! I told her to look this site up on her computer when she got home and she said, she don`t have internet and walked away. As an employee that works at a place that sells chicks in the spring, you would hope they would tell people the difference. Instead they are helping the hatchery lie!  :(

Breeding / improving color on blue wheatens
« on: July 13, 2014, 07:13:09 PM »
I have searched the forum on this but haven`t found my answer. Am i correct in saying, to improve the blue wheatens wing and tail feathers you should breed them to a blue? Then keep the best chicks and keep breeding them back to blue wheaten? Will it also take 10 years to get them looking nice again, or should you do this every 10 years or so? Thanks.
