Broody hen stays on roost
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:04:37 PM »
Each year several hens become broody and just want to sit on nests.  This is the first time I've seen a broody hen spend all her time on the roost.  She is right by a nest, but this girl stays on the roost.  This is one of those "firsts" for me and thought it may be of interest to some.

That's pretty funny.  Maybe someone should tell her "close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades".

She's been that way for couple weeks and puffs up when I open the door to check for eggs.

John:  Do you do anything to hasten their return to normal from the broody state, or do you just wait them out?

Not so far this year.  I have put the broody hens in wire cages with wire bottoms before to try to get them back into the laying mode.
