Blue + Black = 100% Black?
« on: November 19, 2008, 11:18:36 AM »
I bred my now deceased blue roo to one of my black hens (these are true Ameraucana from a well known breeder here), and I have hatched three black chicks, my goal was to have some blue chicks. I have 2 black hens and one blue hen left. Would it make sense to breed any of the black chicks back to black hens or the blue hen in the hope for blue chicks?
I am looking for hatching eggs also, any variety. Should I just wait on these and see if I can get some blue/splash chicks and then breed those?

Amanda,

Blue to black matings usually produce 50% black and 50% blue.  Unfortunately with the small number of eggs you hatched, the odds went against you.

If you hatched a black cockerel in that group, the only way you will have a chance at blue chicks is to breed it to the blue hen.

Jean is right.  With only 3 chicks you could have ended up with all blues as easily as all blacks, but since you wanted blues you got blacks.  I think that is one of Murphy\'s Laws.
If you do a \"search\" using the keywords \"blue black\" you\'ll get many topics on the subject like this one:

Amanda,

If you are interested and have one day shipping available, I have a 10 week old splash cockerel that is available.

Send me a message if you are with your zip code.

Thanks,

Amanda,

With just three chicks you had poor luck! Hopefully, one is a cockerel and you will have better luch next hatch!
