Morning everyone,
One more thing... The feed mixes i fed my pigeons were home mixed rations (much cheaper!!) just curious about your thoughts on feeding these same mixes to bantams. Perhaps they\'ll need a little tweeking. I know how to figure protein in mixes and we raised some excellant youngsters on these mixes.
Breeder mix 16.1% protein
10 parts turkey pellets 20% protein
4 parts wheat (soft red)
3 parts milo
2 parts calf manna 24% protein
2 parts whole small yellow corn
1 part safflower
Grower mix 14% protein
5 parts pellets
4 parts wheat
4 parts milo
3 parts corn
1 part calf manna
Winter mix 11.7% protein
6 parts corn
2 parts pellets
2 parts wheat
2 parts milo
1 part calf manna.
Please let me know your thoughts. I realize chicks need a good 20-28% starter until 8wks of age but after that i would think the birds would grow well on a pellet/grain diet. Keeping in mind the fact that my birds get a fortified grit fresh every day.Chickens have gizzards so that they should make use of them right?
Thanks
Tom

Tom, here is Paul Smith\'s recipe. He asked me to share it.
Barbara

5 gallons of whole wheat aprox. 38 lbs.
1 can (3/4 gallon size like large vegetable cans) whole oats 4 lbs.
1 can corn chops (ground corn) 4 lbs.
1 can commercial lay mesh 16% 4 lbs.
  3 cups oyster shell
  handful granite grit (grower size)
  3/4 can 48% soybean meal 3 lbs.
1 cup Vita Ferm CC5 (very important - vitamin, mineral, enzyme) heres a phone # to reach them at to find a distributor in your area 1-800-821-3070
The soybean meal and Vita Ferm CC-5 are mixed then add 1 cup of used cooking oil and mix again.  This helps the soybean meal / Vita Ferm mixture to cling to the whole grains.
This mixture is a 16% protein.
