That seems to be the trend in wyandotte also as far as showing blues. I have seen great lacing on the wyandottes sometimes be more of a factor than base color.

Are you positive that the black cock is truly black? Blue can come in several shades. I have had some blues so dark that they appear to be black until closer inspection. If he was actually a blue, blue/splash should equal about 50/50 blue/splash.

Mike, congratulations on another successful Coulee Region Poultry Club Show. I just got my July Poultry Press in the mail today. Along with your article and pictures there was also a 2 page article and pictures by Bill Wulff. This issue of the Poultry Press had only 1 section of print and your show results, articles and pictures made up a great deal of this issue. After reading the articles and all of the pictures I was really sorry that I could not attend your show. Maybe next year!

I have had good luck with showing cockerels at 8 months old in LF. Pullets at 7-8 months old. I usually don't start hatching until mid march and have had few problems with molting for early Oct - early Nov shows. But with Global Warming, that is subject to change! I suppose the area of the country and different temperatures you live in might change your results.

Mark your calendar and I hope to see you there.

Clif, I just walked in the door. Tired from the long drive, but glad I went to the show. I kept thinking all the way home, Maybe your Ameraucana pullet Was better than anything entered in the Continental Class! I think you should lobby for it. Prizes or no prizes.

Clif, If all goes well I plan to attend the Missouri State Ameraucana show. I probably won't have any to show as I had no fall hatch last year and all of my adult birds are in breeding pens. The chicks I got from you are all doing well, but don't know of any classes for month old chicks!

Glue? Now here I thought it was only for models, crafts, and hobby. Well I guess chicks can fall in that hobby class! It evidently didn't hold the shell together so as the chick couldn't peck it's way out. Maybe that's why they call it Elmer's Glue All.

On the reply John suggested Janet research APA/ABA youth site for filling out forms for  first timers. Also of interest for new members might be the history of the Ameraucana breed. On that same home page that John mentioned, go over to the right hand column and track down to the bottom of the page for history of AOSB. Click on Ameraucana. It will pull up history of the Ameraucana. Go about half way down in the article and you will be introduced to Mike Gilbert. I have posted before that my interest in Ameraucanas was inspired by those same Wheaten bantams that I saw in shows many years ago. As I have said before enough can never be said in gratitude for all Mike and others have done to not only establish the breed but start and maintain the Ameraucana Breeders Club. Here's my personal THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Mike.

Sorry Janet, I somehow clicked on the wrong button and posted before I finished. At our Local club show, we do have a Champions Row. We set up coops for all of the winners of the 7 LF Classes, 6 Bantam Classes, 4 Duck Classes, 3 Geese Classes, and Turkey Class. These entries are physically moved from their original coops to the Champion Row coops to be judged for further Champions and Eventual Show Champion. This makes a unique part of the show to see all of the class champions in one spot at the show. Really some impressive birds on display at one spot!

Janet, I have been to some shows where there is no Champions Row. Usually smaller shows where all the birds stay in the original coops and just coop cards are marked as for Champion of each class, Champion LF and Bantams, Champion Duck, Goose, Turkey,

I'd like to know what other people use to bathe their birds for shows

I like to bathe my show birds about 5-7 days before a show with Blue Ribbon Show Shampoo. Bathe in shampoo bath for 3-4 minutes, then rinse with warm clear water in 3 separate bathes. I like to use 4 each 5-6 gal totes. I line them up in a row and just progress the birds from tote to tote to tote etc. You can use the same bathe water for several birds until you feel it is getting too dirty, then I just make a new batch and 3 new rinse bathes. I towel off the birds then put them in cages to dry off. This seems to work better than blow drying as the birds rearrange their feathers as they dry and you get less feather wrinkle this way. This shampoo leaves the feathers soft and pliable and a slight gloss. This shampoo has keratin and aloe vera as a base.

John, what was that old saying "You can't please all the people all of the time, just some of the people some of the time." Sometimes doing your best turns into a thankless job! I think personally you are doing a great job and really are an asset and backbone of the ABC. Thank you for your dedication and hard work you do behind the scene.

Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: Preparing incubators for hatching
« on: December 21, 2013, 04:33:57 PM »
Don, I use a spray bottle to liberally spray the diluted Tek-Trol on the outside and inside of the incubators and hatchers. I let it set for a few minutes and then use paper towels to swab and clean and air dry. I don't take the incubators outside to do this. If the odor is too great, you might crack a window, but I usually don't. When I gather eggs and have them in storage racks before incubation, I use the same spray of Tek-Trol to liberally spray them while in the racks. I give them another spray when I finally load them in the incubator for the starting of incubation.
