Breeding / Re: Low fertility of the Ameraucana breed
« on: September 24, 2021, 12:16:00 AM »
I think Kris may be on to something. With 9 hens and one cock, sometimes a cock will have his favorites and only cover those hens. If you have the room perhaps you could separate the hens in 3 pens of 3. Then rotate the cock into each pen for 2-3 days then in another pen in rotation and then back to the first pen. If this doesn't
increase fertility in the eggs, as Kris said about the cocks not feeling good. I would check to see if you could get their runny noses under control. Many things could be causing this. Things to check for include dust or bedding irritation, ventilation, or more severe issues as respiratory disease which could be fungal, viral, or bacterial. If the runny nose gets more severe and causes other issues, you may need to consult a poultry vet.

Exhibiting & Promoting / ABC National Meet Laramie Wyoming
« on: July 29, 2021, 07:14:41 PM »
I have contacted Jackie Roaque of the 7220 Poultry Club which is hosting our 2021 ABC National Meet. Here is her reply on questions that I asked her for information. I hope this will  help with planning on those who are attending the show. Here are my questions with her replies.

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for reaching out! I apologize we have not got back to you sooner.
I am working on the show book right now and hope to have the final copy along with entry forms out by August 8th. I will attempt to answer most of your questions now, but may not be able to answer all as we are still finalizing some plans. This being our very first show we are still trying to tie up some loose ends and finals details, so bear with us!

What are your check in hours for entries? Finalizing our schedule now, but likely 1600 - 2000 Friday evening and 0630-0800 Saturday morning What are the actual hours for your show? 0830-1700  (I see it will be a double show) When can we load out? ~1700 following show Saturday or Sunday morning

When will you have a catalog and entry forms available for your show? August 8th Will they be available as a download on Poultry Show Central?Yes

What health papers and testing is required for out of state entries?  Wyoming Requirements for the importation of Poultry and Hatching Eggs. (a) An ICVI or a National Poultry Improvement Plan Form VS 9-3 is required on all Poultry and Hatching Eggs entering Wyoming. (b) Poultry imported for resale or commercial egg or meat production shall have a negative test result for the following diseases within thirty (30) days prior to import unless from an NPIP clean flock for the respective disease(s): (i) Pullorum – Typhoid; (ii) Avian Influenza; (iii) Mycoplasma gallisepticum; (iv) Mycoplasma synoviae; and (v) Salmonella enteritidis. (c) No poultry or Hatching Egg shall be imported into Wyoming that originates from a Quarantine area or control zone suspected of harboring poultry disease unless permitted by the Wyoming State Veterinarian under a “Secure Food Supply Plan.”

Will food be available at the fairgrounds? We are working on lining up a local 4H club to run concessions. If we are not able to, there are a few fast food options within 5-10 minute drive.

What is your cutoff date for entries? September 4th currently, may change if I can't get the show book out by August 8th or earlier.

Hope this helps!

Breeding / Re: Egg Fertility
« on: June 02, 2021, 02:49:52 PM »
Kris, do you think a change of feed could be a factor in fertility? Another idea I had was location of his breeding pen. I had a rooster once that all he wanted to do was pace back and forth at his divider fence and try to get at the rooster on the other side. He didn't tend to business at hand and that pen had a low fertility rate. Oh rereading your post I see you had already ruled out diet. Keep us posted if you find the answer.

My dog likes to go to shows with me, but he is not always allowed at shows. Well back to working on the kids, but they are too old to learn new ways. Grandkids? They live too far away.

Actually it was my brother (Vicki's dad) that got me started in poultry. Along the way he gave me a Wheaten Ameraucana cockerel. That got me a start into the world of Ameraucanas. Vicki has carried on with poultry, but none of my 3 kids ever got the bug! My oldest daughter will go to shows with me to help drive, but that's about all. Brother passed away 2 years ago so I have lost my major mentor. He was like the ABC Forum search feature. He had been in poultry for over 60 years.

Unfortunately she has to claim me as her uncle. She is my brothers daughter, therefore my niece. What is that old saying? "You can pick your friends, but not your relatives!"

Congratulations Sienna and Audrey on your recent wins. Keep up the good work and I hope to meet both of you at the ABC National in Laramie WY this fall.

News and Information / Re: APA Newsletter Drama
« on: April 20, 2021, 02:18:29 PM »
Kris, I like you got the original email with the APA Newsletter. I did a quick glance at it and saved it to read later. Today, I got the email where they had deleted the newsletter due to something that should not have been published in it. I went back and the original email had been deleted. I do not have a FB account so I have no idea what all the drama is about. Do you think anything will appear in PP in upcoming issues? Just sitting here clueless!

Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: Opinion on Egg Turning Problem
« on: April 12, 2021, 05:28:29 PM »
Kris, several years ago I had my old sportsman incubator loaded to the hilt. I turned off the egg turner to candle eggs at about day 12 if I remember right. For some reason I forgot to turn the egg turner back on.  I did not notice this until about day 17. I was perplexed as to if I should throw the eggs out or not. That was all I needed a batch of crippled and deformed chicks. I called my brother who had been raising chickens for over 50 years and asked him what should I do? His advice was go ahead and let the eggs hatch and see what happens. The outcome was a normal hatch fertility wise and no deformed or crippled chicks and a huge sigh of relief!!!!!! Needless to say I always double check now to see if the egg turner is turned back on after candling eggs.

Breeding / Re: Feather coloring in wheaton Ameraucanas
« on: April 06, 2021, 09:58:29 AM »
Christy, I have raised a few Blue Wheaten over the years, not a lot, but enough to get pullets like yours with no Blue or Black tail or wing feathers. I always treated these pullets as Splash Wheaten. If I bred them to a Wheaten male, I would get Blue Wheaten cockerels and pullets. If I bred them to a Blue Wheaten male I got Blue Wheaten cockerels and an occasional Splash Wheaten cockerel. Pullets would be a mixture of Blue Wheaten coloration and more pullets with no blue in the tail or wings. I have never had a pullet like the one you said has Black markings on her chest. That is a new one on me. Would there be anyway that you could post a picture of that pullet on the forum for others to evaluate. Good luck with your spring hatching!

Yes Lindsay, this is where I buy my Blue Ribbon Show Shampoo. They always seem to have it in stock. I last purchased some in October, just before our North Central District Meet. Their catalog is on their website. If I remember right they quit printing a hard copy last summer due to fluctuating prices. If your party has trouble finding the website just give John or Terry Smith a call at 913-879-2587 - 7:30 A. M. - 3 P. M  CST  Monday-Friday.

 Minimum order $10.00
